Oftewel: de naaikamer!

A.k.a the sewing room!

Een paar maanden terug was ik er al aan begonnen: het opnieuw inrichten van mijn naaikamer.

Wij hebben in ons huis de luxe dat we allebei een hobbykamer hebben (maar wordt niet te snel jaloers: verder is ons huis lelijk en niet onze smaak. Gelukkig is het een huurhuis). Deze kamer werd eerst gebruikt door mijn vriend, maar uiteindelijk hebben we geruild. De kleur op de muur was niet helemaal mijn smaak en het meubilair was een bijeengeraapt zootje. Op een gegeven moment besloot ik dat het tijd was voor een make-over, en nu is het eindelijk klaar!

In this house we have the luxury of both having a room for our hobbies (don’t get jealous though, our house is ugly and we both don’t love it. Thank god we just rent it). This room was used by my boyfriend at first but we swapped eventually. The colour on the wall was not my taste at all and the furniture was pretty mismatched. So one day I decided it was time for a make-over, and now it is finally finished!

De kamer is L-vormig. Je ziet hier de kant met het raam, achter de gele muur is de gang met de voordeur. Als je bij ons op visite komt moet je dus door mijn naaikamer heen. In het stuk bij het raam staat mijn bureau met daarop de naaimachines en mijn computer. Lekker in het licht!

The room has an L-shape. Here you see the window-side, behind the yellow wall is the hall and our front door. If you visit us you have to walk though my sewing room to enter the house. My machines and computer are in the part of the room that has the window. Nice and light!

Dit zie je als je de andere kant op kijkt, de strijkplank en de spiegel. Mooi dichtbij de naaimachines.

This is what you see when you look to the other side, the ironingboard and the mirror. I like them close to my sewing machine.

Naast de spiegel staan twee Billy boekenkasten. In de opbergdozen zitten mijn voorraadjes ritsen, knopen, vlieseline, biaisband etc. Mooi uit het zicht terwijl ik er toch makkelijk bij kan, ideaal.

Next to the mirror are two Billy bookcases. The boxes hold my stashes of zippers, buttons, interfacing, bias tape etc. Out of sight but still easy to reach. Perfect.

Tijdens het zoeken naar inspiratie voor de inrichting van mijn kamer kwam ik vooral veel heel volle naaikamers tegen, waar heel veel dingen wel een eigen plekje hadden, maar wel vol in het zicht. Ik hou daar niet zo van, het maakt me onrustig. Daarom heb ik goed nagedacht over opbergmogelijkheden in mijn kamer. De la en het kastje in deze bureaus was één van de redenen dat ik voor deze koos. Het zorgt voor veel minder rondslingerende dingen. In de la van het smalle bureautje stop ik projecten waar ik aan werk en die ik nog niet aan een hanger kwijt kan. Zoals hier mijn Bombshell badpak. In de la van het brede bureau zitten de geprinte pdf patronen. In het kastje naast de computer zit mijn stoffenvoorraad.

While searching for inspiration for my room online I saw a lot of rooms that had a lot of thing stored in plain sight. That’s not really my thing, it makes me feel a bit nervous. So I thought a lot about storage. The drawer and the little cupboard that these desk have was one of the reasons I chose them. The drawer of the small desk is used for storing in-progress project that cannot be put on a hanger. Like my Bombshell bathing suit here. The bigger drawer holds my pdf patterns. The little closet next to the computer holds my fabric stash.

In dit ladekastje heb ik al mijn naaibenodigdheden gestopt: spelden, rijgdraad, naalden, naaimachinenaalden, spoeltjes, noem maar op. Ik probeer om ze meteen na het gebruiken, of in ieder geval bij het verlaten van mijn naaikamer weer netjes op te ruimen. Ik ben niet zo opruimerig en zo probeer ik de chaos een beetje buiten de deur te houden…

Eronder staan mijn naaibladen. Zoals je ziet kan ik er niet meer bij kopen 😉

This little thing holds all my small sewing equipment: pins, basting thread, machine needels, handsewing needles, bobbins, you name it. I try to put them back in there after using them, or at least before I leave the room. I’m not a very organised person by nature and I try to keep chaos out of the room…

Underneath are my sewing magazines. As you can see there is no room for more 😉

Aan de andere kant van de kamer mijn nieuwe aanwinst: een hoge tafel om patronen uit te knippen. En: meer bergruimte! In de zwarte manden zitten mijn schoenen, mijn wolvoorraad en de andere twee zijn nog leeg. Maar dat duurt vast niet heel lang.

On the other side of the room is my new best friend: a cutting table. And: more room for storage. The black boxes hold my shoes, my yarn stash, and there are two still empty. Although they probably won’t be for long.

Aan de muur hangen mijn linealen, mijn basispatroon en alle andere dingetjes die nodig zijn voor paroonmaken of -knippen. Als je onder de tafel doorkijkt zie je de doos met restjes en voeringstoffen, en de blauwe mand met overgetrokken patronen en vellen patroonpapier.

On the wall are my rulers, my base pattern and all other things you need for tracing and cutting. You can also see the box with remnants and lining fabrics. The blue basket holds traced patterns and tracing paper.

Dit is wat ik zie als ik achter de hoge tafel sta: mijn kledingrek met bijna al mijn jurken. Die hangen daar omdat ik het erg fijn vind om ernaar te kunnen kijken als ik in mijn naaikamer ben. Oke, oke, ook een beetje omdat ze niet meer in mijn kast passen. Ahum.

En wat is dat daar in de hoek?

This is what I see when I stand behind the cutting table: almost all of my dresses on a rack. I’ve put them there because I like being able to watch them when I am in my sewing room. Ok, ok, also because they don’t fit in my closet anymore. Ahem.

And what do you see in that corner there?

Nog een voorraadje, maar dan van wijn. Niet van mij, ik drink eigenlijk nooit. Maar het is Marijn z’n grote hobby, en deze kamer is het meest constant qua temperatuur. Vandaar!

Another stash, of wine this time. Not mine though, I don’t drink. It’s Marijn’s, wine tasting is his hobby. This room is has the most constant temperature in the house, and that’s good for the wine.

Over voorraden gesproken, hier die van mij. De afspraak met mezelf is dat het in dit kastje moet blijven passen en dat lukt tot nu toe aardig.

Speaking of stashes, here’s mine. I made a deal with myself that my stash always has to fit inside this closet, and that works well.

Ik ben nu echt heel blij met mijn naaikamer. Het is alleen al fijn om er te zijn. Het geel is zo vrolijk, alles is netjes opgeruimd en het is van alle gemakken voorzien. Zelfs voor als ik een dagje thuis aan het werk ben. Het is echt mijn eigen plekje.

I am so happy with how my sewing room is now. It’s great to just sit in. The yellow is cheerfull, everything is stored neatly and it is holds everything I need. Even for when I’m working at home fo a day. It really feels like my happy place.
