Joehoe, het is weer mooi weer en we hebben de hele zomer nog voor ons. Dé tijd voor jurkjes en rokjes. Heerlijk vooruitzicht toch? Voor mij, en met mij nog veel meer vrouwen, zit er wel een klein nadeeltje aan: schurende bovenbenen. Als je er last van hebt, dan weet je hoe pijnlijk dat kan zijn. Om ze te voorkomen droeg ik al een aantal jaar lange onderbroeken van Sloggi. En alhoewel dat een heel stuk beter was dan korte leggings of nog erger: afgeknipte panties (zweten!!!), vond ik ze best duur en ze tekenen ook een beetje aan de bovenkant.

Yay, the weather has turned nice again and we have the whole summer ahead of us. Finally time to wear those summer dresses and skirts! But for me, and a lot of other women, it has a slight downside: thigh chafing. If you have this, you know how painful it can be. To prevent it I have been wearing store-bought long underpants. While they are way better than short leggings or, even worse, cut off tights (sweaty!!) they are quite expensive and dig in a bit on top.

Toen ik hem wilde kopen ontdekte ik dat ik het patroon al eerder had gekocht. Dat zit kennelijk in de familie, want dat had mijn oma regelmatig met schoenen 🙂

When I went to buy them, I discovered that I already bought the pattern. Apparently this runs in the family, my grandma had that happen with shoes on multiple occasions 🙂

Het is een echt onderbroek-patroon, compleet met kruisje. Dat in elkaar zetten was even een klusje. Het kruisje heeft de vorm van een spekje, en je naait het eerst in het ene been vast om vervolgens de andere kant tegelijk met de kruisnaad te naaien. Ik deed dat op mijn lockmachine, en de naadtoeslag van een centimeter maakte dat ingewikkelder dan nodig. Daarom knipte ik een halve centimeter van de naadtoeslag af, zodat de breedte van een lockstiksel overbleef. Op die manier kon ik het precies langs het mes van mijn machine laten lopen. Dat werkte een stuk makkelijker!

It’s a real underwear pattern, complete with a crotch gusset. It’s a bit of a hassle to get that on. It has a diamond shape, and you sew it to one leg first and then sew the other side at the same time as the crotch seam. The pattern has a one centimetre seam allowance and on my serger that made it more fiddly than needed. I cut down the seam allowance to the width of a serged seam. That way I could use my serger blade as a guide, which was way easier!

Daar zie je het kruisje. Als stof gebruikte ik katoenen tricot. Viscose kan ook, maar dat vind ik toch wat zweteriger dan katoen. Het patroon voorziet in een bovenkant van omvouwelastiek maar mijn voorkeur gaat uit naar een mooi kantrandje. Dat tekent minder en ik vind het makkelijker om aan te zetten.

Here you can see the crotch gusset. The fabric is a cotton jersey. Viscose jersey would also work but I prefer cotton. The pattern tells you to finish the top of the shorts with fold over elastic but I prefer a nice wide stretch lace. It doesn’t show under clothes and I find it easier to apply.

Dit is hoe ik dat doe: met een blokje post-its om de afstand te bepalen. Het kant ligt met de goede kant naar beneden en de stof ook. Ik stik het vast met een zig-zag steek terwijl ik het kant een heel klein beetje uitrek. Om het zo netjes mogelijk te krijgen heb ik wel de volgorde een beetje veranderd, ik stik eerst de voorkruisnaad, doe dan het kant op de bovenkant en stik van de achterkruisnaad dicht. Door de vorm van het kruisje dat erin zit gaat dat heel makkelijk, en zo loopt het kantje mooi door aan de voorkant.

This is how I do that: with a stack of post-its as a guide. The lace is right side down and so is the fabric. It’s sewn with a zig-zag stitch and the lace is stretched slightly while sewing. To get a neat finish I changed the order of construction a bit. After sewing the front crotch seam I apply the lace and then sew the back crotch seam. Because of the shape of the crotch gusset that’s easy to do, and it gives a nice flat finish at the front.

Na de eerste twee versies (de blauwe en de groene hierboven) maakte ik het patroon iets kleiner. Als ik de maattabel volg dan zou ik een S taille en een L heup moeten maken, en dus koos ik voor een M. Die was in de taille iets te ruim en de pijpjes kropen wat omhoog. Uiteindelijk heb ik nu een patroon ergens tussen S en M in, en die past goed. Ik las in reviews van het patroon dat de taillehoogte wat aan de lage kant was, en ik wilde de pijpjes niet te kort, dus gebruikte ik de lengte en hoogte van de grootste maat. Dat was perfect.

After the first two versions (the blue and green ones above) I sized down a bit. According to the size chart I’m an S at the waist and L at the hips, so I chose to cut a size M. It was slightly big at the waist and the legs crawled up a bit. The adjusted pattern is now somewhere between S and M. In reviews I read that the rise was a bit short and I like the legs slightly long so I used the rise and leg length of the biggest size and it’s perfect.

En nu, in de naam van de naai-wetenschap, sta ik in mijn ̶h̶e̶m̶d̶ onderbroek op het internet.

And now, in the name of sewing science, here I am on the internet in my underwear.

Zo zitten ze dus. Ik ben er heel blij mee, ze zitten fijn, beter dan mijn oude Sloggi’s en het is een stuk goedkoper om ze zelf te maken! Inmiddels heb ik er 6 gemaakt, en ik draag ze bijna iedere dag. Ondanks het kantje vind ik ze niet heel charmant als onderbroek, maar het is altijd charmanter dan die rode plekken met bultjes 😀

So this is how they look. I’m really, really happy with those. They are much more comfortable than the store bought long underpants and it’s way cheaper to make them myself! I’ve already made 6 pairs and have been wearing them almost every day (not all 6 at the same time obviously). Despite the lace I don’t think they’re particularly charming but it does look better than that chafing rash 😀

Long story short: I can’t recommend this pattern enough!

Paprika Patterns Amber shorts

Het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat ik dit korte broekje maakte. Paprika patterns introduceerde hun nieuwste patroon, de Amber trousers. Een patroon met twee variaties, een boek met wijde pijpen en eentje met taps toelopende pijpen, meer geschikt voor de flutterstofjes die afgelopen zomer zo hip waren. Eén van de versies die al snel online kwamen was deze van Domestic Deb. Toen ik die zag ging ik voor de bijl.

It’s been a while since I made those shorts. Paprika Patterns introduced their newest pattern, the Amber trousers. It’s a pants pattern with two variations: a wide legged one and one with narrower legs. One of the people who reviewed the pattern, Domestic Deb, posted her version and I was sold.

Dit korte broekje is de testversie. Ik heb nog een stuk lichte, niet al te dikke spijkerstof liggen en daar wilde ik eigenlijk een lang exemplaar van maken, die met de taps toelopende pijpen. En dan zo dat ik ze aan de onderkant om kan slaan. Vermoedelijk gaat dat ‘m dit jaar niet meer worden 🙂 Wat mij zo aanspreekt aan dit patroon is de vorm van de pas (wat een lelijk woord is dat toch), en de stolpplooitjes in het voorpand. Mijn bovenbenen steken een beetje uit aan de bovenkant en daarom leken die plooien me ideaal.

Dit exemplaar is een maat 3 in de taille, uitlopend naar 4 bij de heupen. Ik haalde wat wijdte weg bij het kruis aan de voorkant en verlengde de binnenbeennaad aan de bovenkant met een centimeter. Zoals je ziet is ‘ie nog steeds een beetje groot, alhoewel de taille precies past. Ik denk dat ik de volgende keer helemaal een maat 3 maak en dan eens kijk hoe dat gaat.

These shorts are meant as wearable muslin. I have a lenght of light blue, lighter weight denim that I want to make into the long, tapered leg version. I imagine them as the perfect easy to wear casual pants/jeans with turned up legs for colder summer/spring days. Next summer/spring probably 🙂 The things I like in this pattern are the shape of the yoke and the little box pleats on the front. I have potruding thighs and I figured those pleats would be great because of that.

These are a size 3 at the waist graded to a 4 at the hips. I took out some width at the front crotch and lengthened the inseam by a centimeter. As you can see, they’re a bit big, even though the waist fits perfectly. Next time I’ll make a straight size 3 and go from there.

De achterkant. De rimpels worden voor een deel veroorzaakt door de omgeslagen pijpen. Die verprutste ik een beetje waardoor ze niet mooi ‘hangen’. Ik denk dat de achterkruisnaad (heet dat zo?) ook wel een klein beetje extra lengte kan gebruiken.

The back. Those wrinkles are partly caused by the cuffs, which I stuffed up and they don’t ‘hang’ properly. Although I also think the back crotch seam can use a little extra length.

Daar is ie dan: de pas! Om hem een beetje extra te accentueren stikte ik de naad door met een licht beige doorstikgaren.

There it is: the yoke! To accentuate it I topstitched it with light beige topstitching thread.

Het patroon was heel goed, alles paste op elkaar, de instructies waren makkelijk te volgen en hij zat zo in elkaar. De pasvorm moet ik nog wat mee pielen, maar dat komt ook vast goed. Over dit exemplaar ben ik matig tevreden, maar ik heb hem thuis wel vaak aangehad met het warme weer. Het is een erg comfortabel broekje!

The pattern is great, all the pieces went together well and the instructions were easy to follow. It didn’t take too long to sew either. I have to tinker a bit with the fit, but I think that will be fine too eventually. I’m not too pleased with the look of these short because they’re a bit too big but I did wear them a lot at home when we had a heatwave or two. It’s a comfy pair!

Nog een paar close ups. Ik vind het bij proefexemplaren altijd leuk om een beetje te spelen met de details, vandaar het doorstikken van sommige naden. Het is niet ‘voor het echie’ dus dan is het ook niet zo erg als het uiteindelijk niet mooi is, zo voelt het dan 🙂

And some close-ups. I like to play around with the details when it’s ‘just’ a trial version, hence the topstitching of some of the seams. It’s not ‘the real deal’ so no big deal if it doesn’t look that good, at least that’s how it feels 🙂

Samengevat: het patroon krijgt van mij een dikke 8, maar deze versie blijft steken op een zesje.

Summarised: the pattern, 8/10, my version: 6/10.

Holiday sho(r)ts

Ik weet niet hoe het met jou zit, maar als ik op vakantie ben leef ik in korte broeken. Zeg maar de pyjamabroek van de vakantie 🙂 Vlak voordat we vertrokken flansde ik er nog even twee in elkaar. Eentje van een stof die ik kocht op het stoffenspektakel, en eentje van de resten van mijn Oonapalooza rokje.

I don’t know about you but when I’m on holidays I basically live in shorts. They are like the PJ pants of holidays. So before we left for our trip I whipped up two pairs. One from a fabric I bought at the bi-annual big fabric market and one from the remnants of my Oonapalooza skirt.

Omdat de stof van beide broekjes wat stretch heeft zijn ze een beetje groot uitgevallen. Dat is stiekem héél comfortabel en aangezien ze echt voor de vakantie bedoeld zijn dus helemáál niet erg!

Because the fabrics both have some stretch in them they are a bit big. But since that’s very comfortable and these are really just holiday shorts, who cares right?

Het patroon voor deze broekjes is hetzelfde als dat ik voor dit en dit exemplaar gebruikte: een aangepaste versie van de Colette Iris. Met steekzakken en een rits middenachter. Heel basic dus, en ideaal voor deze wat drukkere stoffen.

The pattern I used is the same as this and this pair of shorts: an adapted version of Colette Iris. It has slash pockets and a zipper at center back. Very basic, and very suitable for these busy prints.

De voorkanten. Bij het mintgroen met grijze exemplaar heb ik de naden doorgestikt met de driedubbele steek. Bij de andere niet, die stof is van zichzelf al druk genoeg. De zoom is afgelockt, omgevouwen en gestikt.

Front views. All the seams on the minty green and grey coloured one are topstitched with the triple stitch. The other one is not topstitched at all, because the print is busy enough as is.

En de achterkant, met een de rits. Een gewone dit keer, die had ik nog liggen.

De rits ging niet helemaal vlekkeloos erin… Ik schrok hier wel een beetje van, want ik dacht dat ik mijn naaimachine gesloopt had. “Gelukkig” was het helemaal mijn eigen schuld, want ik had de draadspanning niet teruggezet na een stukje rijgen. Deze achterkant heb ik maar zo gelaten, want ik had echt geen zin om dit allemaal los te tornen. Al helemaal niet meer toen ik bij de tweede keer naaien van deze stukken een stuk broekspijp meenam. Waarschijnlijk was ik aan vakantie toe 😉

The zipper didn’t go in seamlessly… I was a bit frightened I had broken my sewing machine when I saw this but “fortunately” it was all my bad, because I forgot to set the tension back to normal after basting the seam. Couldn’t be bothered to unpick all of this though, especially not when I caught on of the legs in the seam when I sewed it for the second time. I probably needed the holiday 😉

I was so happy with these shorts on our holiday, they are very comfortable. In fact so comfortable that I didn’t even want to put on my PJ pants for lounging around 🙂 Which garment makes you forget yours when you are on holiday? And is this the same when at home or are things different then?

Me Made May week 2

Alweer een week voorbij, tijd voor een samenvatting!

Another week over, time for a recap!

Day 8

Een bewonersbijeenkomst ’s avonds zorgde voor een laaange werkdag en dus had ik een comfortabele outfit nodig. Enter de Lady Skater.

An evening gathering with tenants made my workday very long, so acomfortable outfit was needed. Cue the Lady Skater .

Day 9

Thuis aan het werk. Dat betekent pyjamadag! Uit de krochten van mijn kledingkast diepte ik dit shirt op. Het is een Kimono tee van Maria Denmark, maar hij past niet heel mooi en de halsbies is te kort waardoor het trekt. Maar de stof is zo zacht dat ik m niet weg wilde gooien. En vandaag kwam ‘ie goed van pas 🙂

Working from home. This means pyjama day! I took this shirt out of the depths of my closet. It’s a Kimono tee from Maria Denmark. I fussed so much with the fit that it’s way off and the neck binding is too short so it pulls. However, the fabric is so soft I didn’t want to throw it away and it came in handy today.

Zo, dat waren zes dagen deze week! Tot nu toe heb ik ontdekt dat ik meer kleren heb dan ik dacht en heb ik al een aantal dingen gedragen die ik anders niet zo snel aantrek. Ik merk ook dat ik in mijn hoofd veel meer aan het combineren ben dan voorheen. Zelfs was opvouwen wordt leuk(er, niet overdrijven). Me Made May, ik vind het nu al een succes! Vooral ook vanwege de inspirerende foto’s van de andere deelnemers, superleuk om te zien. Hoe gaat jouw Me Made May, als je meedoet?

Six days this week, yay! So far I found out that I have more clothes than I thought and I wore some things I don’t usually reach for. Also, I find myself putting outfits together in my head more and more. It even makes folding the laundry fun(-ish, don’t exaggerate). Me Made May is already a succes to me! Also because of all the inspiring pics from fellow participants, I totally love seeing those. Are you participating in Me Made May? How is it working out for you?

Is dat eigenlijk een echt woord?

Ach, maakt ook niet uit. Afgelopen weekend was het eindelijk zo ver: mooi weer! Hier in het noorden schijnt het niet zo mooi te zijn geweest, maar Marijn en ik waren een dagje naar Amsterdam en daar was het héérlijk. We hebben lekker in de zon op het terras gezeten, voor het eerst dit jaar. Wat was dat fijn!

Shorts weather.. last weekend the nice weather finally showed up! In the north it wasn’t that good I heard, but Marijn and I took a little trip to Amsterdam and it was gorgeous there. We sat on a terrace in the sun, for the first time this year. It was so good!

Voor we weggingen was ik zo helder om het fototoestel in mijn tas te gooien. Het leek me namelijk een prima gelegenheid om mijn nieuwe korte broek op de foto te zetten 🙂 Het is een aangepaste Colette Iris, met steekzakken en een rits middenachter. Dezelfde aanpassingen dus als dit exemplaar, maar dan zonder de omslagen aan de pijpen.

Before we left I had the brilliant idea of taking the camera with me. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to take pictures of my new shorts 🙂 It’s a modified Colette Iris, with slash pockets and a centre back zipper. I made the same adjustments as I did on these shorts, but without the cuffs.

De stof is een dikke stretchkatoen. Voor de binnenkant van de tailleband en de zakken gebruikte ik een restje stof van mijn polkadot NL6000. Door de stretch is het een heel comfortabel broekje geworden, ideaal ook voor het doel waar ik ‘m oorspronkelijk voor maakte: onze vakantie naar Japan! Daar gaan we rondreizen met de trein en kan ik dus niet heel veel bagage meenemen. Een zwarte korte broek leek mij dan ook een onmisbaar item. De ‘little black dress’ van ‘packing light’, zeg maar.

The fabric is a thick stretch cotton. For the waistband facing and the inside pockets I used some leftovers from my polkadot NL6000. The stretch makes them very comfortable, also ideal for the original purpose of the shorts: our holiday to Japan! We will travel by train there so I have to pack light. A pair of black shorts seemed like a must-have, the LBD of packing light, so to say.

Kijk eens aan, mijn eerste jeansnaad! Niet helemaal recht, ook niet helemaal even breed, maar ik denk niet dat iemand de naad in mijn kruis van zo dichtbij zal bekijken…

Iris x Inge

Na de vorige versie had ik meteen zin om nog eentje te maken. Want een snel & simpel project, dat is toch echt iets voor mij 🙂 Maar ik wilde een paar dingen veranderen. Bijvoorbeeld de zakken. Decoratief erg leuk maar niet echt praktisch. Ik hou van praktisch, en dus veranderde ik ze in ‘gewone’ zakken. Met een rits in de zijnaad leek me dat niet heel handig, en dus verplaatste ik die naar de achterkant. Toen maakte ik nog een omslag aan de broekspijpen, en daar was mijn nieuwe shorts! Een klein beetje van mezelf, en een groot beetje van Colette dus.

After the last version, I immediately wanted to make a next one. Because you know, I love quick and easy projects 🙂 But I did want to change a few things. I liked the looks of the pockets, but they weren’t really practical. And since I’m a very practical person, I decided to change them into slash pockets. The side zipper kind of stood in the way of that and so I moved it to the back. Then I added some cuffs and voila, a brand new pair of shorts! A little bit of me, and a big bit of Colette.

Lijkt ‘ie een beetje verfrommeld? Dat kan kloppen want ik heb ‘m al aan sinds ‘ie af is en alleen uitgedaan om te slapen. Hij zit heer-lijk!

Do they look a little wrinkly? Yeah I guess that’s because I’ve been wearing them since they were finished and only took them of to sleep. They are so com-for-ta-ble!

De stof ik die ik gebruikt heb is de donkergroene corduroy die ik van Tine kreeg bij de Summer Sewing Swap. Op de foto’s is het een beetje uitgerekt van het dragen, maar dat wist ik van tevoren en bij dit model vind ik dat helemaal niet erg. Lekker casual!

The fabric I used is the dark green corduroy Tine gave me for the Summer Sewing Swap. In the photo’s it is a bit stretched from wearing it but I knew that would happen. With this model I really don’t mind, I like the casual look.

Ik ben trots op het afwerkingsniveau. De naden lopen allemaal netjes door, de rits zit er mooi in, de naden bij de zakken lopen mooi recht, en de tailleband past perfect.

I’m proud of the finishing of these shorts. The seams are straight, the zipper looks good, the topstitching at the pockets is straight and even and the waistband fits wonderfully.

Eindoordeel dus: helemaal goed. Vol goede moed door naar het volgende project: het patroon dat ik won in de give-away van Dottie Doodle. In dit auberginekleurige stofje met, hoe kan het ook anders, bloemetjes 🙂

So the final judgement: succes! And on to the next project: the pattern I won in Dottie Doodle’s give-away. In this eggplant coloured fabric with, what a surprise, flowers 🙂

Colette Iris shorts

De zomer is nu echt voorbij. Dus ik dacht: laat ik eens shorts maken 🙂

Summer is now really over, so I thought it would be nice to make some shorts 🙂

Ik gebruikte de Iris van Colette Patterns. Eigenlijk is dit een proefmodel van een restje stof, om te kijken hoe de pasvorm is. En die is bijna perfect! Geen rare rimpels bij het kruis of bij mijn billen. Het kruis hangt een klein beetje te laag maar ik heb geen idee hoe ik dat moet aanpassen. Het stoort me ook niet echt en dus laat ik het gewoon zo. De volgende versie wordt van de groene corduroy die ik nog heb van de Summerswap. Daar wil ik ook graag een omslag aan de onderkant van de broekspijpen maken. Een beetje meer casual dus, en dan vind ik het juist mooier als de pasvorm wat losser is.

I used the Iris pattern from Colette Patterns. This is actually a wearable muslin from some leftover fabric, to see how the fit would be. Turns out it’s almost perfect! Almost no wrinkles or frowns on the crotch or the bum. The crotch is a little bit low but I have no idea how to adjust that. It doesn’t really bother me so I will just let it be. For the next version I want to use the green corduroy I have left from the Summerswap. On that one I want to add cuffs so it will be a little more casual. And then a looser fit isn’t a problem.

Ook van de zijkant ziet het er prima uit. Op deze foto zie je iets waar ik vaker ‘last’ van heb, ook bij rokjes, namelijk dat het voorpand iets naar voren gaat staan. Zou dat komen doordat mijn bovenbeenspier wat uitsteekt aan de bovenkant? Weet iemand of dit zo is en zo ja of ik dan mijn patroon kan aanpassen zodat dat minder wordt?

It also looks good from the side. On this photo you see something that happens more, also with skirts. The front sticks out a little at the bottom. Could that be because of my slightly big upper leg muscle? Does anyone know, and know of some sort of pattern alteration to prevent this from happening?
