Maxi mania

Twee jaar geleden maakte ik een maxi rok. Die draag ik nog steeds regelmatig. Zodra de zon schijnt en het is een beetje warm trek ik m uit de kast. Ideaal ook als het mooie weer je een beetje overvalt en je hebt je benen nog niet geschoren 🙂 Zo ook afgelopen donderdag. Toen realiseerde ik me dat ik er eigenlijk nog wel eentje wilde. Of twee, of drie, je weet hoe dat gaat. Vanaf het werk bestelde ik een paar viscose tricot stofjes zodat ik in het lange weekend lekker aan de slag zou kunnen. Vrijdag had ik ze al in huis, en op zondag ging ik er mee aan de slag.

Two years ago I made this maxi skirt. It gets worn quite regularly. As soon as the sun shines and the temperatures rise it goes into heavy rotation. Maxi skirts are also very convenient when you are a bit overtaken by warm weather and haven’t shaved your legs yet 🙂 I wore that skirt last Thursday and realised that I needed another one. Or two or three maybe, you know how that goes. At work I ordered some viscose jersey fabrics so that I could get to work in the long weekend we’re having. The fabric arrived on Friday and I sewed these skirts up on Sunday. How’s that for instant gratification?

Ik begon met deze paarse. Mijn collega’s vonden deze stof verschrikkelijk, maar ik vind ‘m mooi van lelijkheid 🙂 Ik had per ongeluk wat te weinig van deze stof besteld, maar gelukkig had ik nog een stuk breed elastiek liggen en was er een groot genoeg stuk over om daar een tunnel voor te maken. Het is niet heel netjes, maar dat zie je toch niet aan de buitenkant.

This purple panter print one was first. My co-workers really disliked this fabric but I think it’s pretty because it’s so ugly 🙂 I accidentally ordered too little fabric. but fortunately I had a piece of wide elastic and a big enough scrap to make a casing. It’s not the neatest one ever but it doesn’t show on the outside.

The pattern matching worked out fine if I may say so myself 🙂

Deze heeft een bijpassende elastieken tailleband zonder tunnel. Lekker makkelijk, snel klaar.

This one has a matching elastic waistband without a casing. Very easy and quick.

Last but not least ging ik met deze aan de slag:

Deze heeft een tailleband van een dubbelgeslagen stuk stof. Die kun je gewoon zo dragen maar je zou hem ook omgeslagen kunnen dragen, als bij een yoga broek. De realiteit is echter dat ik mijn band niet helemaal recht van draad knipte en dat ‘ie dan niet helemaal mooi wil zitten.

This one has a yoga-style waistband. It’s tight enough to wear it as is, but it can also fold over. Reality though is that I cut it a bit off grain and it doesn’t look good folded over.

In totaal heb ik denk ik 4 uurtjes werk gehad aan deze drie rokjes. Zijnaden en taillebanden op de lockmachine (behalve de rode, die deed ik op de naaimachine ivm de strepen) en de zoom op de coverlock. Ik koos bewust voor stoffen waar iets van zwart in zit zodat ik de draden niet hoefde te wisselen. Lekker simpel en snel, daar had ik ook wel even zin in na twee spijkerbroeken!

In total these skirts took about four hours. The side seams and waistbands are sewn on the loverlocker (except for the red one, which is made on the sewing machine because of the stripe matching) and hemmed on the coverlock. I deliberately chose fabrics with some black in it so I wouldn’t have to change the threads. Easy and fast, just what I needed after making two pairs of jeans!

De maxi rok party! / The maxi skirt party!

Ja, het is er echt eentje.

Yes, it really is a maxi skirt.

Deze katoentricot stof kocht ik een half jaar geleden met de bedoeling om er een Lady Skater jurk van te maken, maar ik twijfelde een beetje of de kleur niet té fel was. Twee weken geleden reed ik naar huis van het werk, een uur en een kwartier enkele reis, dus de ideale gelegenheid om een beetje te dagdromen over aankomende naaiprojecten. En opeens wist ik het: ik wilde een maxi rok maken van deze stof. Die avond maakte ik een patroon, en ook deze rok. Hoera voor dit soort snelle projecten!

I bought this cotton jersey fabric about six months ago with the intention of making a Lady Skater dress, but then I started to worry about the colour being a bit too much. Two weeks ago I was driving home after work, which is a 1 hour and 15 minutes drive and an ideal opportunity to daydream about upcoming sewing projects. Suddenly I knew I wanted to make a maxi skirt out of this fabric. I made a pattern and the entire skirt that evening. Hurray for instant gratification projects!

De foto’s zijn gemaakt tijdens een tussenstop onderweg naar het werk. Ja, ’s ochtends vroeg. Dus als ik er een beetje moe uitzie, dan weet je waarom 😉

I stopped on the way to work to take these photos. Yes, early in the morning. So if I look a bit tired, you know why 😉

Op deze foto zie je goed hoe het patroon in elkaar zit (en dat ie wat te groot is uitgevallen, haha. Ach, iets om aan te passen voor de volgende keer!). Het is een hele basic rechte rok met een pas. De pas is dubbel gevouwen en zo aan de rok vast genaaid. Super simpel, en snel. En comfortabel. En precies wat ik in gedachten had.

On this picture you can see what the pattern looks like (and that it turned out a bit big at the waist, haha. Ah well, something to fix for the next time!) It is a basic straight skirt with a yoke. The yoke is folded at the top and sewed to the skirt like that. Super easy and fast. And comfortable. And exactly what I had in mind.

De rok loopt ietsje wijd uit aan de onderkant. Precies genoeg om er makkelijk in te kunnen lopen zonder dat de zoom uitrekt. Die heb ik voor het gemak maar weer met een rechte steek genaaid, net als bij mijn meest recente Lady Skater jurk. Want waarom moeilijk doen als het makkelijk kan?

The skirt flares out just a bit towards the bottom. Just enough to be able to walk easily without stretching the hem. So I used a straight stitch again, just like on my latest Lady Skater dress. Because why make things difficult when they could be easy, right?

Nu even over het dragen van deze rok. Ik dacht altijd dat maxi rokken niks voor mij waren. Ik ben niet zo groot en ik dacht dat ik daardoor nog kleiner zou lijken. Maar toen ik deze aantrok (en over de teleurstelling van de te wijde heuppas heen was 🙂 ) merkte ik hoe fijn dat eigenlijk zit. En hoe elegant dat voelt, de stof die langs je benen beweegt als je loopt. En hoe ‘put together’ zo’n rok voelt terwijl het tegelijkertijd voelt alsof je je pyjamabroek aanhebt. En ik hoef jullie vast niet meer te vertellen hoe een fan van pyjamas ik ben. Ik ben om, maxirokken FTW!

So a thing about wearing this skirt. I alwayw thought maxi skirts were not for me. I am not very tall and I always worried that they would make me look small and frumpy. But when I tried this one on (and after the initial dissapointment that the yoke was too big 🙂 ) I noticed how comfortable maxi skirts are. And how elegant it makes you feel, the fabric floating along your legs when you walk. And how ‘put together’ it feels while at the same time it feels like you’re wearing you pj bottoms. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that I am a big fan of pj’s. I am sold, maxi skirts FTW!

Solid as a rock

Een effen jurk, lang geleden dat ik die maakte! Mijn eerste Cami jurk was effen zwart, maar met gekleurde stiksels. En verder alleen deze blauwe NL 6000 jurk, geloof ik… Hoog tijd om daar maar eens verandering in te brengen 🙂

A dress from a solid fabric, it has been quite a while since I made one! My first Cami dress is solid black, but has contrast topstitching. My first NL 6000 dress must have been the only true solid dress I have made… About time to change that 🙂

Ook dit patroon heb ik zelf gemaakt. Marijn en ik zijn gek op tv-series, en een poos geleden keken we Borgen. Birgitte Nyborg heeft op een gegeven moment een groene jurk aan met een v-hals en knoopjes. Die vond ik zo tof dat ik besloot om m een keer na te maken. Helaas kan ik geen foto vinden van die jurk, dus je zal het van me aan moeten nemen dat ie er echt op lijkt. Alleen dan niet groen.

This is a pattern I’ve made myself again. Marijn and I love watching tv series, and a while ago we were watching Borgen. Birgitte Nyborg is wearing a green v-necked dress with front button closure in one episode and I liked it so much that I decided to make a dress like that one day. Unfortunately I can’t find a pic of that dress so you’ll just have to take my word for it that this dress really looks like that one. It’s just not green.

Kapmouwtjes zijn voor mij echt de ontdekking van het jaar. Ze bedekken de schouders genoeg voor op het werk en geven niet zo’n opgefrummelde look onder een vestje. En als bonus: gebruiken niet veel stof. Deze jurk is gemaakt van 1,5 meter stof! Oke, ik gebruikte een restje van mijn Christmas Cami voor het beleg maar dat telt niet echt mee toch?

Cap sleeves are the discovery of the year for me. They cover enough of the shoulders to be suitable for work and don’t bunch up under a cardigan. And bonus: they use very little fabric. This dress only took 1,5 meter of fabric! Ok, I used a remnant from my Christmas Cami for the facing but that doesn’t really count, right?

De rok is een halve cirkelrok, dat leek me leuk om eens uit te proberen. Het patroon maken was een eitje met behulp van de By Hand London app. Ik denk dat ik dit soort rok vaker ga gebruiken, een mooie afwisseling voor de gerimpelde en geplooide exemplaren.

The skirt is a half cirkle one, I thought it would be a fun shape to try out. Making the pattern was a piece of cake using By Hand London’s app. I think I’ll use this skirt pattern more often, it’s a nice deviation from the gathered and pleated ones I often use.

De achterkant. Volgende keer trek ik ‘m even recht voor de foto 😉 En hallo kreukels! Maar ook: hallo, precies genoeg ruimte op de rug om te bewegen, zonder op de klokkenluider van de Notre Dame te lijken.

The back view. Next time I’ll make sure it’s straight before I take the picture 😉 And: hello wrinkles! But also: hello, exactly enough ease to move, but not enough to look like the hunchback of the Notre Dame.

Deze foto doet het al een beetje vermoeden: ik ben erg blij met deze jurk! Een heel klein puntje van kritiek: ik ben vergeten om de halslijn te ‘staystichen’ waardoor die een heel klein beetje uitgerekt is. Hopelijk helpt het opschrijven hiervan om het niet weer te vergeten (maar ik heb een donkerbruin vermoeden van niet hehe).

Perhaps this pic gives it away a little: I am quite happy with thow this dress turned out! Just one minor complaint: I forgot to staystitch the neckline and it has stretched a teeny bit. Hopefully writing this down will help me remember it next time (although it probably won’t hehe).

Een klein beetje hobbelig inderdaad. Het beleg piept een heel klein beetje onder de mouwtjes uit maar dat vind ik er juist wel leuk uitzien. De knoopsgaten zijn overigens niet functioneel, ze zitten nog dicht. Ik heb de biezen aan elkaar genaaid, er zit een rits in de zijnaad.

It’s a little wobbly indeed. The facing peeks out a bit from underneath the sleeves but I quite like that. The buttonholes aren’t functional. I sewed the plackets together, there is a zipper in the side seam.

Een met de hand genaaide zoom. Mag ik zeggen dat het WK perfect is om voetbal en met de hand naaien te combineren? Ja, dat mag ik zeggen!

A hand sewn hem. Guys, watching the world championship on tv is so perfect for hand stitching!

Als uitsmijter nog een paar details. Waar ik misschien nog wel het allertrotststst op ben is de manier waarop het beleg en de knoopsgatenbies in elkaar overgaan. Dat had ik zo uitgedacht en het werkte ook nog. Niet dat iemand het ziet, maar ik weet dat het er zit. Is dat niet het mooie van zelf kleren maken?

Last but not least some details. The thing I’m actually the most proud of is the way the facing and the button placket connect. I thougt it out that way and it worked out exactly like that. Not that anyone will ever see it, but I know it’s there. Isn’t that the beauty of making your own clothes?

From Crepe-ish to Cambie-ish

Het patroon van mijn vorige jurk baseerde ik op dat van de Crepe. Ik zei toen al dat ik nog een paar dingetjes wilde aanpassen: de halslijn verlagen en de mouwtjes iets minder ehm, aanwezig maken. Afgelopen week had ik eindelijk weer tijd om achter de naaimachine te kruipen en dus ging ik aan de slag.

The pattern of my last dress was based on the Crepe. In that post I said I wanted to make some adjustments: lowering the neckline and make the sleeves a bit less, well, big. Last week I finally had some sewing time and so I got to work.

Efficient patroonknippen / efficient pattern cutting

Ik naaide het bovenlijf in elkaar en keek of het paste. Toen zag ik het: ik had mijn Crepe-achtige patroon omgetoverd in een Cambie-achtig patroon!

I sewed up the bodice and tried it on for fit. And then I noticed: I had changed my Crepe-ish pattern in a Cambie-ish pattern!

Eerst was ik eigenlijk een beetje teleurgesteld. Ik heb twee Cambies gemaakt (hier en hier) en die passen beide prima, dus het voelde een beetje alsof al dat patroontekenwerk voor niks was geweest. Maar ja, uiteindelijk gaat het om de jurk die eruit voorkomt en de ervaring van het doen, en toen kon ik wel over die eerste teleurstelling heen stappen.

At first I was a little disappointed. I have made two Cambie dresses (here and here) and they fit pretty good, so it felt a bit like all that pattern drafting was for nothing. But then I realised in the end it is about the resulting dress and the learning experience and I was able to get past that first bit of disappointment.

Ik besloot wel om de rok te plooien in plaats van te rimpelen, wat ik eerst van plan was, om de gelijkenis met de Cambie te verminderen. Na heel wat rekenwerk over hoeveel plooien en hoe breed die moesten zijn (waar ik uiteraard compleet niet uit kwam) besloot ik het maar met de vrije hand te doen. Het is niet helemaal symmetrisch maar dat valt niet op.

I did decide to pleat the skirt rather than to gather it, to decrease the resemblance to the Cambie. After doing a lot of math on the amount and width of the pleats (and not getting it) I decided to just wing it. It’s not perfectly symmetrical but that doesn’t really show.

Uiteindelijk denk ik dat dit de best passende jurk is die ik tot nu toe heb gemaakt. Ik ben er zo blij mee!

In the end I think this is the best fitting dress I have made so far. I am so, so happy with it!

Sorry voor de kreukels, maar ja dat krijg je met een katoenen jurk. Waarschijnlijk ziet ‘ie er vaker zo uit dan perfect gestreken. En ook voor de crappy foto’s, maar dat was alles wat ik voor elkaar kreeg bij Marijn. Voor degenen onder jullie met een gewillig fotograferende vriend/man: wees er maar zuinig op 😉

Sorry about the wrinkles, but well, this is what you get with a cottong dress. It will probably look like this way more than perfectly ironed. Also sorry for the crappy pics. For those with a boyfriend/husband willing to take loads of pics: consider yourself lucky 😉

Close-up van de figuurnaden. Als ik heel kritisch ben denk ik dat die aan de zijkant nog wel een halve centimeter naar beneden kan. De hoogte van de apex is anderhalf jaar geleden opgemeten door mijn naai-juf, sindsdien ben ik wat afgevallen en wat ouder geworden, dus misschien zijn de dames ook wel wat gezakt.

Close-up of the bust darts. If I’m really nitpicky I think I could probably lower the side dart about a half a centimeter. The apex height was measured by my sewing teacher a year and a half ago, and since then I lost some weight and got a bit older, so maybe the ladies sagged a bit.

Een close-up van de halslijn en de belegdelen. Voor het beleg gebruikte ik Jenny haar tutorial, waarin ze heel goed uitlegt hoe je een mooie afwerking krijgt. Ik wist al wel hoe dat moest als je een middenachter rits hebt, maar dit keer deed ik de rits in de zijnaad en had ik dus geen naad op de rug.

Another close-up of the neckline and the facings. I made an all-in-one facing and sewed it in as per Jenny’s fabulous tutorial. There is no center back seam in this dress because the zipper is in de side seam. I thought and thought about how to put in the facing when I remembered her great ‘making facings your friend’ series.

Crepe-ish or the ‘oops’-dress

Lang geleden maakte ik al eens een paar patronen voor rokjes zelf. Daarna hield het eigenlijk een beetje op met mijn patroontekenavonturen. Maar een paar weken terug kreeg ik het opeens op mijn heupen en tekende ik een basispatroon voor mezelf. Niet zo eentje die ‘skintight’ is, maar met wat beweegruimte erin, net zoveel als dat mij ideaal leek. Vervolgens wilde ik het gaan gebruiken om het patroon van Colette’s Crepe jurk zo aan te passen dat die precies paste.

Some time ago I drafted some patterns for skirts, and then my adventures in patterndrafting kind of stopped. But a few weeks ago I was suddenly hit with an urge to draft someting, and I made a basic bodice. Not a skintight one like a block or a sloper (or whatever it is called), but one with just as much ease as I wanted to have. Then I decided to use it to adapt Colette’s Crepe pattern to fit me.

Dat ging hardstikke goed. Ik legde het Crepe patroon op mijn patroon en trok het over zodat mijn zelfgemaakte patroon de halslijn en mouwtjes van de Crepe kreeg. De taille was ongeveer even groot als die van maat 6 en dus nam ik die maar voor de rok. Ik maakte een bovenlijf-proefje van de stof die ik als voering wilde gebruiken en dat paste zowaar. Alles ging dus prima, totdat ik de patroondelen op de stof ging leggen. Te weinig stof. Oeps.

So far so good, I put the Crepe pattern on top of my self drafted pattern and traced it so that my self drafted pattern got the neckline and sleeves of the Crepe pattern. The waist seemed to match the size 6 so I took that size for the skirt. I made a muslin of the bodice from the lining and it fitted. All went well untill I put the pattern pieces on my fabric. I didn’t have enough. Oops.

Maar ja, ik wilde per se die jurk uit die stof, en op dat moment! Dus ik paste mijn plannen wat aan, en besloot in plaats van de wikkelsluiting een rits middenachter te doen. En dus knipte ik 4x het voorpand van de rok en haalde ik het extra stuk van het achterpand van het bovenlijf af. Crisis afgewend. Ware het niet dat ik in mijn vastberadenheid vergat om naadtoeslag aan mijn nieuwe middenachternaad te knippen. Oops 2.

But, I wanted that pattern, made from that fabric, at that time. So I adapted my plan and decided to add a centre back zipper and eliminate the wrap part. To do that, I just cut 4 front pieces of the skirt and removed the wrap part from the bodice back. Crisis averted, I thought. Only to discover later on that I totally forgot to add seam alowance to the centre back. Oops 2.

Uiteindelijk is het allemaal goed gekomen. Ik naaide de zijnaden op 1cm ipv 1,5 zodat ik ook een centimeter over had om de middenachternaad (3x woordwaarde!) te naaien. Ik denk dat dit de pasvorm wel een klein beetje beinvloed heeft maar ja, beter een beinvloede pasvorm dan een te kleine jurk!

It all worked out in the end though. I sewed the side seams on 1cm instead of 1,5cm seam allowance which gave me a centimeter to put in the centre back seam. I think this influenced the fit a bit but hey, an influenced fit is still better than a too small dress right?

Ik ben erg blij met de vorm van de halslijn, alleen zou ik hem bij de volgende versie iets lager maken. En de mouwtjes iets smaller, want ik vind ze wel een beetje breed.

I’m very happy with the shape of the neckline, even though I will lower it a bit on a next version. I will also make the sleeves a little bit narrower, as I think they are a bit wide.

Ondanks dat ben ik supertrots op deze jurk. Ik deed iets wat ik nooit eerder heb gedaan en het werkte!

Despite those things I am super proud of this dress. I did something I had never done before and it worked!

Kennen jullie deze nog…nog…nog…

Dat lijkt me een goede vraag… Lang geleden dat ik een blogpost schreef! Een poosje had ik niet zoveel zin om achter de naaimachine te gaan zitten. Ik was druk met werk, een cursus projectmanagement, nieuw werk zoeken en hardlopen. Ja, je leest het goed. Hardlopen. En ik vind het nog leuk ook!

Remember me? Seems like a legit question, it’s been such a long time since the last post I wrote! For a while I didn’t really feel like sewing. I was busy, with work, a project management course, looking for a new job and running. Yes, that’s right. running. And I am really enjoying it!

Om niet te vervallen in ellenlange verhalen, zal ik jullie een kleine samenvatting geven van de afgelopen twee maanden:

1. Ik heb drie rokjes gemaakt

2. Ik kan inmiddels 10 minuten achter elkaar hardlopen

3. Ik heb een nieuwe baan!!! Een hele toffe ook nog, weer bij een woningcorporatie. 2 December ga ik beginnen. Aankomende week is mijn laatste week in mijn huidige baan. Spannend allemaal!

So, to prevent myself from boring you with loooong stories, here is a little summary of what happened in the past two months:

1. I made three skirts

2. I can run for ten continuous minutes

3. I have a new job!!! A very nice one too, in social housing again. December 2nd will be my first day. Next week is the last week at my current job. How exciting!

Van het hardlopen en de nieuwe baan heb ik geen foto’s, maar van de rokjes gelukkig wel 😉

Een hoofdloos rimpelrokje.

En met hoofd. Ik las bij Miss Dibs dat volumineuze rokken helemaal hip zijn dus ik dacht dat eentje extra geen kwaad kon. En ze zijn zo lekker makkelijk om te maken. Het stofje kocht ik op het Stoffenspektakel laatst.

Head included. I read at Miss Dibs that full skirts are quite trendy at the moment so I figured it wouldn’t hurt if I added another one to my wardrobe. Plus, they are so easy to make. The fabric is from the bi-anual big fabric market in my town the other day.

Een rokje van rekbare stof met een pied de poule printje. Ik wilde al héél lang een rokje in dit printje, dus toen ik deze stof laatst zag was ik helemaal blij. Helaas ben ik niet heel blij met hoe het geworden is. Het is een zelfgetekend patroon maar ik vind de pasvorm niet zo geslaagd. Plus dat de naadtoeslag van de zijnaden niet goed wil blijven zitten, waardoor het erg tekent op mijn heupen 😦 Iemand een oplossing daar voor?

A skirt from some sort of knit fabric with a houndstooth print. I wanted to make a skirt with this print for a long time, so when I spotted this fabric I immediately bought it. Unfortunately I’m not thrilled with how it turned out. I drafted the pattern myself but the fit is not how I wanted it to be. Also, the seam allowances at the side seams won’t stay in place, which adds bulk to my hips 😦 Does anyone have a solution for that?

En als laatste een A-lijn rokje met een hoge taille. Het lijkt alsof de zoom scheef is, maar dat is optisch bedrog 😉 Deze is vers van de pers, dus vandaar geen ‘aan’-foto’s en een beetje een belabberde geflitste foto.

And the last one, a high waisted A-line skirt . The hem looks weird, but that’s an optical illusion 😉 This one is straight from the production line, so no pictures of me wearing it and a bit shabby flashed photo.

Culottes

Oftewel, de broekrok. Alhoewel dat een veel minder mooi woord is natuurlijk, het klinkt vrij lomp.

Op vakantie in Japan zag ik ze heel veel,broekrokjes. En het leek mij ideaal, aangezien ik als ik rokjes draag nog wel eens last heb van schurende bovenbenen in de zomer (of is dat too much info?). En dat doet zeeeer!

On holiday in Japan I saw a lot of culottes. They seemed ideal to me, because my thighs rub together when wearing skirts and that’s really painfull (or is that too much info?).

Daar in Japan besloot ik het al: ik wil ook een broekrokje proberen te maken. In de winkels keek ik hoe ze in elkaar zaten en kreeg ik al een beetje een idee. Terug van vakantie zag ik Megan Nielsen’s nieuwe patronen en daar zat een broekrok tussen. Voordat ik die kocht, zag ik Leila’s blogpost over haar zelfgetekende broekrok (die je echt even moet zien!), met een link naar deze tutorial, die ik uiteindelijk heb gebruikt.

So it was back there in Japan that I decided to try and make culottes. I checked them in the stores and got an idea of how they were constructed. Back home I read about Megan Nielsen’s new patterns and they included a culotte pattern! But before I bought that one I read Leila’s blogpost about her self-drafted culottes (go check them out, they look great!). It linked to this tutorial that I ended up using to draft my own pattern.

No idea where the muffin top look comes from 🙂

Het toffe van dit patroon is dat het op het eerste gezicht een gewoon rokje lijkt. En dat is het eigenlijk ook, het is een halve cirkelrok, maar dan met een ingebouwd broekje. Door de plooien middenvoor en -achter zie je daar echter helemaal niks van.

The great thing about this pattern is dat at first sight it looks just like a skirt. Which in fact it is, it’s a half circle skirt, but it has built-in pants. The pleats at center front and -back do a great job in hiding the pants-part.

Op deze foto kun je de plooien (een soort stolpplooi) zien, die het broekstuk verbergen.

Here you can see the pleats (kind of an inverted pleat) that hide the pants-part.

Zo ziet het er van binnen uit. In de tutorial staat dat de rits in de zijnaad moet ivm de plooi in de middenachternaad. Ik hou niet zo van ritsen in de zijnaad en tijdens het maken van mijn proefmodel (!! jaja) ontdekte ik dat het prima mogelijk was om een onzichtbare rits in de plooi te verwerken.

This is how it looks from the inside. The tutorial suggests a side zipper because of the pleat in the center back seam. I’m not too fond of side zippers, and when I made my muslin (!! :o) ) I found out that it was possible to put an invisible zipper in the pleat.

Hoe dat zit kun je beter zien op bovenstaande foto’s. Mocht het niet duidelijk zijn en je wilt het wel weten, laat dan even een comment achter, dan maak ik een tutorial.

Dus, dat is de broekrok. Ik ben er erg over te spreken, het zit lekker, je kan er prima mee fietsen en geen schurende benen meer. Is dat genoeg om je over te halen om ook een broekrok te maken?

So, culottes. I’m very pleased with them, they’re comfortable, perfect for bicycling, and no more rubbing thighs. Is that enough to pursuade you to make culottes too?

Want ja, er moeten natuurlijk verschillende soorten stofjes en technieken worden uitgeprobeerd. Héél vervelend…

Because there are different sorts of fabrics and techniques to be tested. It’s a dirty job…

Om nog een beetje licht te krijgen, heb ik foto’s gemaakt op ons balkon. Dat is nogal in het zicht, omdat we tegenover een appartementencomplex wonen. Ik hoop dat ook dat jullie een beetje over mijn ongemakkelijke blik heen kunnen kijken 🙂

To get a little light for the photo’s, I took them on our balcony. We live across the street from an appartment building, so it is in plain sight. This explains the awkward look, I hope you guys don’t mind 🙂

Voor het vorige rokje gebruikte ik een batist, dit keer een ‘gewoon’ katoenen stofje, vorig jaar gekocht op het stoffenspektakel. Het viel me toen op omdat het lijkt op de stof waar ik vroeger als klein meisje eens een rokje van kocht toen we op vakantie waren in Frankrijk. Ah, jeugdsentiment…

The previous skirt is made of cotton batiste, this time I used a ‘normal’ cotton, bought last year on a big fabric market that hits my town twice a year. I immediately liked it because it reminds me of a skirt I bought on holiday in France when I was a little girl. Ah, memories…

Wat ik vergat te vertellen in de Cambie-blogpost, en weer in die over het vorige rokje, is dat ik ze heb gerimpeld met tandfloss. In dit youTube filmpje wordt heel duidelijk uitgelegd hoe je dat kunt doen. Hierdoor zijn de rimpels veel makkelijker gelijkmatig te verdelen, iets waar ik altijd veel moeite mee had.

What I forgot to mention in the Cambie-blogpost and again in the one about the previous skirt, is that I gathered them with dental floss. This YouTube movie provides a thorough explanation. By gathering the fabric this way, it is much easier to get evenly disributed gathers, something I used to struggle with.

Aangezien ik geen blinde rits in de goede kleur meer had, gebruikte ik een gewone.

En de zakken. Zoals je ziet heb ik in plaats van twee drie patroondelen gemaakt waardoor de zakken wat meer naar voren zitten. Dat is op een veel logischere plaats als je je handen erin doet!

And the pockets. Instead of two pattern pieces I made three, which provides a much more logical place for putting your hands in the pockets!

En als laatste, voor degenen die zich afvroegen wat voor plant er steeds half op de foto staat: dat is een brocolli. Ik heb een moestuintje gemaakt op mijn balkon! Het groeit en bloeit op het moment dat het een lieve lust is, hartstikke leuk om te zien. En op de foto te zetten 😉

And at last, for those of you wondering what kind of plant is showing in those pictures: it’s a brocolli. I have a little vegetable garden on my balcony! At the moment it’s growing very fast, I love to see how the plants and vegetables develop. And to make pictures of them 😉

Gister nog ‘in progress’ en vandaag al klaar, buiten gedragen, gefotografeerd én nu geblogd. Dat is toch wel een teken van een geslaagd project!

‘In progress’ yesterday, and finished, worn outside, photographed ánd blogged today. That must be a sign of succes!

Na de Ceylon en de Cambie was het wel weer eens tijd om een rokje te maken. Een ‘full gathered skirt’ dit keer. Omdat ik die zo leuk vind, en er nog niet echt een geslaagd exemplaar van had gemaakt. Ja, deze, maar die is een beetje te groot geworden en daardoor zit ‘ie niet meer zo mooi. Maar ook, omdat ik er een klein plannetje voor heb…

After Ceylon and Cambie it was time for another skirt. A full gathered one, because I really like those, and I hadn’t made one that I was satisfied with yet. I did make this one, but it’s gotten a bit too big and doesn’t fit that good anymore. And also because I have a little plan…

Een hele poos terug vertelde ik al dat ik op mijn werk (bij een woningcorporatie) een tijdelijk contract heb en dat dat door bezuinigingen niet wordt verlengd. Gelukkig loopt het nog tot 31 december dus ik heb nog genoeg tijd om een nieuwe baan te zoeken, maar gezien de economische toestand en het feit dat zowat alle woningcorporaties aan het reorganiseren zijn geslagen, kan het zomaar eens zijn dat een nieuwe baan wat langer op zich laat wachten.

Nu heb ik er wel heel veel vertrouwen in dat ik wel weer wat vind, maar je weet het nooit zeker. Wat ik wél zeker weet, is dat ik niet thuis op de bank wil komen te zitten zonder iets te doen. En aangezien je geen vrijwilligerswerk mag doen als je in de WW zit (wat echt belachelijk is), moest ik iets anders verzinnen. Je voelt hem vast al aankomen: ik ga kijken of ik kleding (meer specifiek rokjes) kan gaan maken om te verkopen.

Some time ago I talked about the fact that my job will end at the end of the year, due to economic cutbacks. It will not end untill the 31st of december so there is still lots of time to find a new job, but with the economic situation and the fact that almost all companies in the field I’m working in (social housing) are reorganising, it might as well take longer to find a new job.

I’m quite confident that I will find a new job eventually, but I don’t know how long it will take to find one. One thing I do know, is that I don’t want to be unemployed with nothing to do. And when you get unemployment money, you are not allowed to do volunteer work (which is ridiculous!), so I had to come up with something else. You’ll probably feel it coming by now: I’m going to see if it’s possible to start selling me-made clothes, or more specifically skirts.

Dus ik ben momenteel ook bezig met een soort businessplan. Maar dat is nog best lastig. De twee grootste vragen die ik momenteel heb zijn

1. Hoe kom ik aan klanten, en

2. Hoe bepaal ik de prijs?

So at the moment I’m working on some kind of business plan. But that’s not so easy. My two main questions at the moment are:

1. How do I get customers, and

2. How do I establish the price?

Uiteraard heb ik deze vragen ook al aan Google gesteld, maar ik vraag ze toch liever aan echte mensen 🙂 Dus mocht je mij kunnen helpen met het beantwoorden van bovenstaande vragen, dan zou ik dat heel erg op prijs stellen!

Ofcourse I asked Google these questions too, but I much rather get answers from real people 🙂 So if you could tell me anything about these topics, I would very much appreciate it!

Multi-problem rokje

Dit is vast herkenbaar voor iedereen die wel eens iets maakt. Soms gaat het van een leien dakje, en soms lijkt alles wat je doet verkeerd te gaan. Bij dit rokje was het laatste het geval.

This is probably recognizable for everyone who makes things. Sometimes it’s all smooth sailing and sometimes everything you do seems to go wrong. This skirt is one in the second category.

Zo op het eerste gezicht zie je dat er niet aan af. Gelukkig! De dingen waar ik tegenaan liep waren ook bijna allemaal wel te verhelpen, alleen wel een beetje irritant.

At first sight you can’t see it, luckily! The problems I‘ve encounterd were not permanent, but they sure were annoying.

Een doorgestikte naad met een harige achterkant, een pas die op mysterieuze wijze niet paste (die naam, dat is natuurlijk ook de goden verzoeken!), en vlekken van het strijkijzer. Heel fijn.

Topstitching with hair, a facing that mysteiously didn’t fit, and stains from the iron. Nice, really.

Maar hé, uiteindelijk is het een hele leuke rok geworden!

But hey, it turned out to be a pretty nice skirt!

Bonus: met mijn zondaghoofd op internet 🙂 Het patroon tekende ik zelf, geïnspireerd op Megan Nielsen’s Kelly skirt. Ik wou het patroon graag kopen, maar mijn bankrekening was het daar niet helemaal mee eens. Toen heb ik een soortgelijk patroon getekend. Mijn plooien zijn iets minder diep, en ik heb hem wat langer gemaakt. Ik hou van rokjes die net onder de knie vallen.

Bonus: my sunday-face on the internet 🙂 I drafted this pattern myself, based on Megan Nielsen’s Kelly skirt. I wanted to buy the pattern, but sadly my bank account didn’t agree. So I drafted my own pattern, based on hers. The pleats on my skirt are a bit smaller and the skirt is longer. I like my skirts to end just below the knee.

De stof is een soepele, lichtblauwe spijkerstof. Ik kocht het op de markt hier in Leeuwarden, het was het laatste stukje op de rol, 80 cm en kostte 5 euro. Met het klosje garen en de knopen kostte dit rokje in totaal een zee van tijd en iets meer dan een tientje. Koopje toch?

The fabric is a soft, lightblue denim. I bought it on the market here in Leeuwarden, it was the last bit. I paid 5 euro for 80 cm. With the tread and the buttons, this skirt cost me a lot of time and a little more than 10 euro’s. That’s a steal right?

Het doorstikken deed ik met een goudkleurige draad die ik nog had liggen, en met de driedubbele steek. Erg mooi geworden, al zeg ik het zelf! Ik heb mijn machine nu iets meer dan een half jaar en ik ben er nog steeds erg over te spreken, hij werkt erg prettig en maakt mooie steken.

For the topstitching I used a gold coloured that I already had, and the triple stitch on my machine. I love the way it turned out. I have gotten my machine a little over 6 months ago and Im still really happy with it. It’s great to work with and the stitch quality is very nice.

Het enige dat ik een volgende keer anders zou doen is dat ik de pas aan de voorkant in het midden één of twee centimeter lager zou laten eindigen. Nu zit die naad precies op het ‘dikste’ gedeelte van mijn buik en dat zou ik liever anders zien. Het stoort me niet hoor, maar is meer een soort verbeterpuntje. Voor de rest ben ik super tevreden.

The only thing I would change if I would make this skirt again, is to lengthen the yoke by 1 or 2 centimeters. It hits right on the ‘biggest’ part of my belly and I think it would look better if it covered that part. It doesn’t really bother me though, I’m perfectly happy with this skirt as it is.

Wat me wel stoort, is dat ik vandaag eigenlijk wilde bloggen over een jurkje dat ik vorige week al afmaakte. Maar ik gooide het vanochtend zonder er bij na te denken in de wasmachine… Daarom hier een kleine sneak preview, zodra het droog, gestreken en op de foto gezet is meer!

What does bother me is that I was planning to write about a dress I finished over a week ago. But without thinking about it, I threw it in the washing machine this morning… So here is a sneak preview, more will follow as soon as it is dry, ironed and photgraphed!
