Kirsten Kimono Tee dresses

Herken je dat, dat je sommige kledingstukken maakt omdat je ze wilt maken, en andere omdat je ze wilt dragen? Deze jurkjes vallen voor mij in de laatste categorie. Het kwam de laatste paar weken al een paar keer voor dat ik ’s ochtends dacht ‘als ik toch eens een lekker flutterig viscosetricot jurkje had, dan was dat toch ideaal geweest voor vandaag’. Maar ik had eigenlijk totaal geen zin om er eentje te maken. Ik had wel stoffen in voorraad (uiteraard 😎) maar wist niet zo goed welk patroon ik wilde gebruiken, had geen zin om die dunne stofjes te knippen enzovoorts.

Tot afgelopen woensdag, de eerste dag van mijn vakantie (hoera!). Toen dacht ik nogmaals aan die jurkjes, en hoe fijn die zouden zijn voor de vakantie. Ik lag nog lekker in bed met een bakje koffie en de laptop, en ik keek op de H&M site of ze daar misschien leuke jurkjes hadden. En opeens was daar de inspiratie: ik had nog een half in elkaar geplakt exemplaar van de Kirsten Kimono tee van MariaDenmark liggen. Ooit begonnen aan elkaar te plakken omdat ik dacht dat ik een ander patroon van haar geprint had (lekker snugger). Er moesten nog welgeteld 3 A4tjes geplakt worden. Dat kon ik nog wel opbrengen. Ik knipte een maat M, uitlopend naar een L op de heupen zodat het daar niet te strak zou zitten, en verlengde het patroon met 27,5 centimeter. De zijnaden verbreedde ik bij de zoom aan beide kanten nog met 2 centimeter voor een beetje flair in de rokjes en ik voegde een middenachternaad toe.

Do you recognize this: some clothes you make because you want to make them, and some because you want to wear them. These dresses fal in the latter category. The last few weeks I have noticed that my wardrobe could use a few loose-ish fit viscose knit dresses, but I didn’t feel like making them. I did have some fabric stashed (ofcourse 😎) but didn’t know what pattern I wanted to use, didn’t feel like cutting those fluttery fabrics etcetera.

Untill last wednesday, the first day of vacation (yay!). I was thinking about those dresses again, in bed with some coffee and my laptop. I was browsing the H&M website to see if there were dresses that would fit the bill and suddenly I knew what to do. I had a half put together pattern of the Kirsten Kimono tee by MariaDenmark laying around, which I started taping together because I thought I had printed out another one of her patterns (how clever, ahem). There were only 3 A4’s to go so nothing I coulnd’t handle. I cut a size M and graded to an L at the hips for a casual fit. Then I lenghtened the pattern bij 27,5 centimetres and added 2 cm of width to the side seams at the hem for a little bit of flair. I also added a CB seam.

Het eerste exemplaar is van een zwarte viscose tricot met donkeroranje stipjes, ik geloof dat ik die ooit eens als couponnetje heb gekocht ergens. Jaren geleden al. Deep stash hier beste mensen! De mouwtjes zijn afgewerkt met een bies, afgekeken van de Odette uit de La Maison Victor (ook een kandidaat als patroon voor deze jurkjes maar de Kirsten Kimono tee is wat getailleerder). Alles is verder met de lockmachine genaaid behalve de zoom, die deed ik met de cover.

The first one is in a black viscose jersey with dark orange dots, which I probably bought somewhere as a remnant years ago. Deep stash baby! The sleeves are finished with a band, inspired by the Odette top from La Maison Victor (which was also a contestant as a pattern, but this one has more waist shaping, which I preferred). Everything is sewn on the overlocker except for the hem, which is coverstitched.

The back side looks a little wonky but that’s because I wore it while riding my bike 🙂

Vervolgens ging ik aan de slag met het volgende stofje: een hele zachte zwart-witte tricot. Volgens mij ook viscose, maar hij valt wat anders dan de eerste. Minder rek in de lengte en hij ‘plakt’ wat meer. Daarom moest ik deze een flink innemen op de rug. Laat ik daar nou precies die middenachternaad voor hebben toegevoegd 😁

Up next was another knit, this time in black and white dots. Probably viscose as well but this one has a different hand: less lengthwise stretch and it clings more. I had to take it in quite a lot at the CB for it to hang well. But hey, that’s why I added the CB seam 😁

Toen waren de stofjes die ik in mijn hoofd had op, maar mijn naai-zin nog niet, en dus dook ik nogmaals in mijn voorraad. Ik trok er nog een stofje met gele bloemen uit, dat ik ook gekocht had om er een maxi-rok mee te maken, maar nadat ik er ook eentje voor mijn schoonzusje had gemaakt was er te weinig stof over. Voor dit jurkje was er net genoeg als ik het een beetje korter maakte. Na het knippen bleek dat er nog genoeg stof over was om een band voor de zoom te maken, mits ik die in de lengterichting van de stof knipte. De rek zat gelukkig ook in de lengte dus dat kon prima.

Then the fabrics I had in mind were finished, but I had the energy to make another dress. So I went to my stash and took out another viscose knit, with yellow flowers. I had bought this last year to make it into a maxi skirt, but after I had made one for my sister-in-law, there wasn’t enough fabric left. There was juuust enough for this dress if I shortened the hem a bit. After cutting it turned out that I could also cut a hem band, when cutting it lengthwise. Luckily the fabric has enough lenghtwise stretch to make that work.

Nu ben ik dus helemaal klaar voor de vakantie! Deze jurkjes en een paar lange onderbroeken is alles wat ik nodig heb, haha. Ik ben wel benieuwd, maak jij ook onderscheid tussen dingen die je wilt maken en dingen die je wilt dragen maar niet per sé zin hebt om te maken?

So now I’m ready for the holidays! These dresses and a couple of long underpants are all I need, haha. I’m curious, do you make the distinction between things you want to make and things you want to wear, but not neccesarily like making?

Another Rachel wrap dress.

SPOILER ALERT: I LOVE THIS DRESS!!!!

Oke, nu dat duidelijk is kunnen we over naar een kleine bekentenis. Ik heb geloof ik een bipolaire naai-stoornis. Of ik wil alles tegelijk naaien en wel nu meteen, of ik heb er even helemaal geen zin in. Je raadt vast in welke fase ik me nu bevind 🙂

Right, now we’ve got that out of the way it’s time for a little confession: I think I am suffering a bipolar sewing disorder. Either I want to sew everything at once and also right now, or I don’t want to sew at all. You can probably guess in which phase I am right now 🙂

En dus maakte ik nog maar een Rachel wrap dress. Dit keer van een dikke tricot. Dezelfde stof maar een andere kleur gebruikte ik voor deze Lady Skater met col. Het is een heerlijke stof, warm en zacht. Perfect voor wat kouder weer.

And so I made another Rachel wrap dress. This time out of a heavy jersey fabric. The same fabric I used for my cowl Lady Skater, but in another colour. It’s such a nice fabric, soft and warm. Perfect for colder weather.

Omdat deze stof wat dikker is, minder rekt en anders valt dan een viscose tricot zoals die ik voor de eerste twee versies gebruikte, moest ik op het rugpand twee figuurnaden toevoegen. Verder voegde ik aan de zijnaden een halve cm toe zodat ik niet zou eindigen met een te strakke jurk. Het trekt een beetje bij de overslag, zoals je hieronder kunt zien, maar dat vind ik niet storend.

Het enige wat ik nog had kunnen aanpassen is de lengte van het bovenlijfje, maar daar was ik te lui voor. Een centimetertje langer was misschien beter geweest maar ik vind het zo ook dikke prima.

Because this fabric is thicker, less stretchy and has a different drape than the viscose jerseys I used for the first two versions, I had to add darts to the back for shaping. I also added 0,5 cm to the side seams so I wouldn’t end up with a too tight dress. The wrap pulls a bit as you can see above but it doesn’t bother me.

The only thing I should probably have changed but didn’t do because I was lazy, is lenghtening the bodice. It could use an extra centimeter, but it will do perfectly fine as is though.

De zwarte contrast-stof is een restje viscose tricot dat ik nog had liggen. Het leek me leuk om eens te spelen met wat contrast en ik vind het hardstikke goed gelukt. Ik denk dat de schouderstukjes en het randje van de mouw het mooi in balans trekken.

The black contract fabric is a viscose jersey leftover. I thought it would be fun to play around with a bit of contrast and I like how it worked out. I think the shoulder yokes and the sleeve hem bands balance it out.

Rachel x Plantain

Omdat de schouders van de Rachel wrap dress die ik laatst maakte niet zo goed pasten heb ik ze vervangen door de schouders en mouwen van de Plantain. Dit was de eerste keer dat ik een dergelijke aanpassing deed dus ik legde de taillepunten op elkaar en op hoop van zegen trok ik vanuit daar de zijnaad, het armsgat en de halslijn van de Plantain over. Het was een flink verschil:

Because the shoulders of the Rachel wrap dress I made recently didn’t fit to well, I put the shoulders and sleeves of the Plantain shirt onto the dress pattern. This was the first time mashing two patterns together like this, I just matched them at the waist, traced the side seam, shoulders and neckline of the Plantain and hoped for the best. As you can see above, the difference was substantial.

Vervolgens trok ik een wat minder geliefd stofje uit mijn stoffenkast en ging aan de slag.

Then I pulled out a piece of fabric I didn’t especially like anymore and went for it.

Score!

Perfect gelukt al zeg ik het zelf. De schoudernaad zit waar ie moet zitten en ook de hoogte van de taille is precies goed. De overslag zit ook een stuk steviger nu er niet meer teveel lengte in het bovenlijfje zit.

Perfect, if I may say so myself. The shoulder seam is where it needs to be and the waist hits at exactly the right place. The wrap also feels much more secure now the excess lenght is taken out of the bodice.

Precies goed / just right.

Hij is ook net een stukje korter dan de vorige, die ik bij nader inzien toch wat aan de lange kant vond. Geen ingewikkelde aanpassing, gewoon een kwestie van geen zoomtoeslag aanknippen.

It’s also a little shorter than the previous one, which in hindsight I decided is just a little too long. No complicated alterations here, I just didn’t cut any hem allowance.

Het enige dat ik nog ga aanpassen aan het patroon is de onderkant van de voorpanden, omdat die aan de kant waar ze overlappen nu iets te lang zijn.

The only thing left to change on the pattern is the length of the wrap at the hem, it needs to be shortened a little.

Verder ben ik helemaal tevreden over hoe het patroon nu is. Op naar nog tig meer versies 🙂 Voor nu in de planning: een effen donkerrode en een effen zwarte. Serieuze vraag: hoeveel versies van hetzelfde patroon is te veel?

Besides the wrap lenght I’m perfectly happy with the fit of this pattern. On to many more versions! So far I’ve already planned a solid dark red and solid black one. Serious question: how many versions of the same pattern is too many?

Maria Denmark Rachel wrap dress

Yo! Dat is lang geleden 🙂 Vakantie, verhuizen en een trouwjurk maken voor een vriendin zijn kennelijk niet zo goed voor de blog-zin. Ach, who cares, we zijn er weer!

Yo! It’s been a while 🙂 apparently a holiday, moving and making a wedding dress for a friend is not so good for the blogging mood. Ah well, who cares, I am back now!

Dit is het nieuwste patroon van Maria Denmark, de Rachel wrap dress. Ik was al een poosje van plan om het patroon van de Lady Skater om te bouwen naar een wikkeljurk maar toen ik dit patroon zag besloot ik om voor deze te gaan. De weg van de minste weerstand 🙂

This is Maria Denmarks newest pattern, the Rachel wrap dress. I wanted to make a wrap dress for a while and was planning on changing the Lady Skater pattern into a wrap dress but when I saw this pattern I decided to use this one. Taking the easy way out 🙂

De jurk zat zo in elkaar. De pasvorm moest ik wel wat aanpassen. Ik begon met een maat 36 bij de schouders, 38 buste, 36 taille en tussen 38 en 40 bij de heupen. Je moet wat je als je afmetingen all over de maattabel zitten. Dit leverde een vanaf de buste naar beneden prima passende jurk op maar bij de armsgaten en de schouders zat het niet helemaal jofel. Om dat enigszins op te lossen nam ik de jurk ongeveer 2,5 cm in aan de zijnaad, vanaf bustehoogte tot halverwege de mouw. Dat scheelde al een stuk maar het is nog niet goed, met name bij de schouders. Op een of andere manier zijn de schouders aan de voorkant heel smal. Daardoor lijkt het net alsof ik mega brede schouders heb, en het doet ook iets raars met mijn boezem, optisch gezien. Kijk maar:

This is a quick and easy dress to sew. I did have to alter the fit a bit. I started with a size 36 at the shoulders, a 38 at the bust, 36 at the waist and between a 38 and 40 at the hips. That’s what happens when your measurements are all over the size chart. It resulted in a dress that was a good fit from the bust down, but not so good above. I took the side seams in by about 2,5 cm at the underarm, from bust to halfway down the sleeve. This improved the fit but it’s not perfect yet. Especially at the shoulders. Somehow they are really narrow at the front. This makes my shoulders look mega wide and also does something weird with my bust, visually. Have a look:

Voor een volgende versie ga ik denk ik de schouders en mouwen vervangen door die van de Plantain, want die passen me goed. Ook ga ik het bovenlijf met iets meer dan een centimeter verkorten, want het voelt alsof er ook iets teveel lengte in zit.

For a next version I’ll replace the shoulder and sleeves with those from the Plantain, because they fit so well. I’ll also shorten the bodice a bit because I feel it’s a little too long.

De banden kunnen de volgende keer ook wel wat korter 😉 Nu ben ik klaar met zeuren hoor, ik ben blij met mijn nieuwe jurk. Hij zit lekker, ik vind dat ‘ie mooi staat als je niet van te dichtbij naar de schouders kijkt en de stof vind ik ook tof.

I think next time I’ll shorten the ties a bit too 😉 Now I’m done complaining, I really like my new dress. It’s comfortable, I think it looks good if you don’t look at the shoulders too close and I like the fabric.

Dus. Laten we het nog even over die muggebulten op mijn kuiten hebben. Marijn en ik hebben gister een wandeling gemaakt dwars door een natuurgebied en die muggen grepen kennelijk de gelegenheid om een feestmaal te houden achterop mijn kuiten. Hmm. Kleine tip dus: als je door een gebied gaat wandelen met veel muggen trek dan geen dunne strakke spijkerbroek aan!

So. Let’s talk about those mosquito bites on my calves. Yesterday we hiked in one of our national parks and apparently the mosquitos had a feast on my calves. Hmm. Pro tip: when you go hiking in an area with lots of mosquitos, don’t wear skinny jeans from thin fabric!

De kokerrok uit Gerties new book for better sewing. Ik draag deze niet vaak, omdat ik niet zo goed wist hoe ik ‘m moest combineren. En omdat de tailleband na de lunch wat te strak was als ik zat 😁 Maar mijn nieuwe paarse vest past er perfect bij en of de lunch was niet zo groot of mijn taille is iets kleiner geworden want ook na de lunch kon ik nog comfortabel zitten. Hoera!

My pencil skirt from Gerties new book for better sewing. I have worn this skirt only twice since making it, because I didn’t know what to pair it with and because the waistband got a bit uncomfortable when I sat down after lunch 😁 I discovered that my new purple cardigan is a perfect match and either my lunch was not that big or my waist has shrunk a bit because I could still sit comfortably after lunch. Hurray!

Sewing plans

Vorig jaar maakte ik rond deze tijd mijn niet-per-se-een-to-do-lijstje. Kennelijk is de lente voor mij het meest inspirerende seizoen 🙂

Last year around this time I made my not-neccesarily-a-to-do-list. Apparently spring is an inspiring season to me 🙂

Dat ik niet de enige ben blijkt wel uit de verschillende ‘inspiratie’ posts die in mijn blogreader verschijnen. Ik vind dat altijd leuk om te lezen! Vandaar dat ik besloot om mijn ~~plannen~~ ideeën maar weer eens op een rijtje te zetten.

And I’m not the only one it appears, seeing all kind of ‘inspiration’ posts popping up in my blogreader. I quite enjoy reading them! So I decided to list my ~~plans~~ ideas again.

Here we go:

Lady skater jurken met korte mouwen / short sleeved lady skater dresses

Maria Denmark Edith jurken, omdat ik die ene die ik heb zo fijn vind (en er vaak complimentjes over krijg haha) / Maria Denmark Edith dresses, because I love the one I already made (and get complimented on it a lot too haha)

mouwloze Gather Mortmain jurken / sleeveless Gather Mortmain dresses

Colette Parfait. Ja, die ben ik nog steeds van plan / Colette Parfait. Yes, this one is still on the to do list

Simplicity 2444, met een gerimpelde of een geplooide rok / Simplicity 2444 with either a gathered or pleated skirt

Colette Crepe, misschien met de strik in een andere kleur. Maar welke? Ik zit te denken aan rood, bordeaux of petrol. Wat denk jij? / Colette Crepe, perhaps with the waist ties in a contrast fabric. I’m thinking red, burgundy or teal. What do you think?

And maybe…

Van deze ben ik er nog niet helemaal uit. Het stofje met de bladerprint wil ik graag een geplooide rok van maken. Misschien kan ik daar het rokdeel van de Mortmain wel voor gebruiken.

These are the ones I’m not sure about yet. I want to make a pleated skirt from the leave print fabric, and figured I could use the skirt of the Mortmain.

Goed, ik ga denk ik maar mijn baan opzeggen om dit allemaal af te krijgen 😉 Wat zijn jouw naaiplannen voor de komende tijd?

Right, I think I’ll just have to quit my job to be able to finish al these plans 😉 What are your sewing plans for spring?

2013 Recap – misses

Lekker positief ook, om daarmee het nieuwe jaar te beginnen 😉 Dat doen we dus even anders!

Yeah that’s a nice, positive start for the new year 😉 so let’s do that differently!

Voor jullie allemaal. Ik zeg het niet zo vaak maar ik ben superblij dat jullie hier zijn en tijd nemen om mijn hersenspinsels en handenmaaksels te bekijken, en er ook nog op te reageren! Op mijn telefoon heb ik een WordPress app en elke keer als er een melding is dat er een nieuwe reactie of ‘like’ is dan maakt dat mijn dag. Bedankt daarvoor!

To all of you. I don’t say this often but I’m so happy that you are here and taking time to read my ramblings and take a look at the things I make. I have a WordPress app on my phone and it brightens my day every time it tells me that there is a new comment or ‘like’. So thank you for that!

En dan nu de wat minder geslaagde projecten van 2013.

And now the less succesfull projects of 2013.

1. Pied de poule rokje / Houndstooth skirt

2. Edith blouse

Ze zijn beide echt niet mislukt ofzo, maar wat er denk ik mis bij ging is dat mijn verwachtingen te hooggespannen waren. Het waren beide dingen die ik al een tijd wilde maken en waar ik aan begon terwijl ik er eigenlijk geen zin in had, maar vond ‘dat het er toch maar eens van moest komen’. Dat is dus geen recept voor succes…

Hetgeen waar ik niet tevreden over ben kan bij beide makkelijk aangepast worden, maar het feit dat ik dat nog niet heb gedaan zegt genoeg denk ik.

Both are in no way a failure, but what I think went wrong is that I had such high hopes for these garments. Both are things I wanted to make for some time, and started when I wasn’t really feeling it. But I thought I just had to ‘get it over with’. Not quite the recipe for a succes…

The things that I’m not happy about are easily fixed, and the fact that I haven’t done that says enough.

3. Polka dot frock fest NL 6000

De mouwen en armsgaten zaten veel te strak, en ik kon maar niet wennen aan het zij-aanzicht. Bovendien geeft de rits mijn achterste nogal een ehm, onnatuurlijke look. Hij ligt al in de prullenmand.

The sleeves and armscyes were way too tight and I couldn’t get used to the way it looks from the side. And on top of that, the zipper gives my behind kind of an ehm, unnatural look. It has been binned.

4. BurdaStyle 2-13-127

Slechte pasvorm en veel te flutterige stof naar mijn smaak. Hij ligt nog ergens in de kast, onderop de stapel, en daar is alles wel mee gezegd 🙂 het patroon vind ik nog steeds wel erg leuk dus wie weet probeer ik hem nog eens, met wat aanpassingen.

Bad fit and the fabric is too flimsy for my taste. It still in my closet, somewhere on the bottom of a pile, that says it all 🙂 I still like the pattern though, so who knows it will be revisited sometime, with a few adjustments.

En hoewel het een top 5 is, kom ik maar tot 4. En aangezien één van mijn doelen voor afgelopen jaar was om vooral dingen te maken die ik zelf leuk vind, en geen dingen waarvan ik denk dat anderen ze leuk vinden, ben ik daar zeer tevreden over!

And though this is a top 5, these 4 are the only I can come up with. And since one of my goals for 2013 was to make only things I like, and not things I think other people will like, I’m really pleased with that!

Er zijn nog wel een paar dingen die ik heb gemaakt en niet vaak draag omdat ze niet zo goed bij mijn ‘lifestyle’ passen, zoals bijvoorbeeld mijn geruite pencilskirt. Maar die vind ik nog steeds wel heel mooi, dus dat vind ik geen ‘miss’.

There are some things I’ve made that I don’t wear a lot, because they don’t really suit my ‘lifestyle’. Like my plaid pencil skirt. But I still really like them, so I don’t want to call them a ‘miss’.

Al met al ben ik zeer tevreden over wat ik dit jaar heb gemaakt. Ik heb het idee dat ik gegroeid ben in wat ik kan en hoe ik dingen maak, hopelijk zet die trend zich door in 2014!

All in all I’m really happy with what I’ve sewed this year. I feel my sewing skills have progressed a lot, I’ve learned new things and work much more precise. Hopefully this trend will continue in 2014!

Double gauze Edith blouse

Dat rijmt 🙂 Na het proefmodel dat ik maakte waagde ik me nu aan het ‘echte werk’: de blouse.

That rhimes 🙂 After making the muslin dress, the ‘real thing’ started: the blouse.

De stof kocht ik op vakantie in Japan. Het is double gauze, twee hele dunne laagjes katoen die op sommige punten samengewoven zijn. Het is een heel luchtig stofje, en dus perfect voor warme zomerse dagen. Gelukkig hebben we die nog volop, wat een heerlijk weer is het toch steeds!

This is the fabric I bought in Japan. It’s a double gauze, two very thin layers of cotton, woven together in some points. It’s a very thin, airy fabric, perfect for warm summer days. Fortunately we still have those over here, I love the ongoing warm weather this summer!

Net als de jurk-versie zat deze blouse zonder al te veel problemen in elkaar. In de blogpost over de jurk vertelde ik een paar dingen die ik wilde aanpassen aan het patroon. Die aanpassingen deed ik ook, behalve het verhogen van de taille. Dat ben ik vergeten.., Uiteraard kwam ik daar pas achter toen ik de helft van het patroon al had uitgeknipt… oeps!

Just like the dress version this blouse cane together without any issues. In my previous post about the dress I told about the adjustments I wanted to make to the pattern. I made all those, except the raising of the waistline. I forgot that… and ofcourse I only realised that halfway during the cutting of the fabric… Oops!

Op deze foto’s draag ik de blouse op mijn Jenny-rok. Alhoewel de blouse best goed gelukt is, ben ik er toch een beetje ‘mwah’ over. De zijkanten steken wel vrij ver uit bij de heupen. Terugkijkend doen ze dat in de jurk ook, maar daar valt het niet zo heel erg op omdat het onderdeel is van de rok. En daarnaast ben ik niet echt een blousjesdrager, dus ik moet nog een beetje oefenen met het combineren.

In this pictures I paired the blouse with my Jenny skirt. Even though this blouse turned out pretty ok, I’m feeling a bit ‘meh’ about it. The sides stick out a bit to much at the hips. Looking back they also do that in the dress, but it isn’t as obvious as it is part of the skirt. And besides that, I’m not much of a blouse-wearer, so I have to practice a bit with outfit combinations.

Met een spijkerbroek kan het ook wel, toch? Of is met een rokje leuker?

It’s fine with jeans too, isn’t it? Or does it look better with a skirt?

Of met een vestje. Ik ben een groot vestjes-fan.

Or with a cardigan. I’m an avid cardigan wearer.

Details

De knoopjes komen van een rommelmarkt in Eindhoven, waar we tijdens een bezoekje aan mijn schoonouders heengingen. Op de foto rechtsonder zie je (als je goed kijkt) dat ik een extra stikseltje heb gemaakt om rafelen te voorkomen. De naadtoeslag is daar ingeknipt om de bocht te kunnen maken, maar ik vertrouwde de stof niet helemaal dat die niet zou gaan uitrekken en rafelen. Niet de mooiste oplossing, maar waarschijnlijk zo goed als onzichtbaar aangezien het toch onder mijn oksel zit.

I bought the buttons at a fleemarket in Eindhoven we visited with my in-laws. The lowest picture on the right side shows a little extra line of stitching I put in there to prevent the fabric from fraying. The seamallowance is snipped there in order to make the underarm curve, but since this fabric is fraying easily I didn’t want to leave it like that. It’s not the prettiest of solutions, but since it hides in my armpit I’m pretty sure no-one will see it.

To take in or not to take in, that’s the question

Daar twijfel ik dus nog een beetje over. Zal ik de zijnaden een beetje innemen bij de heupen zodat het niet zo naar buiten steekt? Wat zou jij doen?

I’m contemplating wether or not to take it in at the hips so it doesn’t stick out so much. What would you do?

Edith muslin & give-away

Nou, het bleek geen toevalstreffer, dat proefmodel dat ik maakte van de culottes. Het beviel wel goed, om eerst een testexemplaar te maken. Daarnaast heb ik het idee dat ik steeds meer ga snappen van het aanpassen van patronen. En zie hier, het proefmodel van MariaDenmark’s Edith dress!

It wasn’t a one hit wonder, the muslin I made for my Culottes. I quite liked a testrun before making the final garment. And I’m starting to get the hang of getting patterns to fit my body. So I present to you, the wearable muslin of MariaDenmark’s Edith dress!

Meteen toen ik het patroon zag leek het me het perfecte patroon om een blouse mee te maken van de rode gestippelde double gauze die ik in Japan kocht. Ook daarom wilde ik graag een proefmodel kocht, want als die niet goed zou passen, dan was mijn mooie stofje verprutst, en zou ik niet zo makkelijk nieuwe kunnen kopen. Of het zou een goed excuus zijn om weer naar Japan te gaan, hehe.

As soon as I saw the pattern it seemed the perfect pattern to make a blouse of the red polkadotted double gauze I bought in Japan. Another reason to make a muslin, because the blouse needed to fit as I couldn’t just get new fabric if it didn’t. I would give me a good excuse to go back to Japan though, hehe.

Hmmm… I think my plant needs water

De pasvorm van deze jurk is dikke prima. Gezien de ‘problemen’ die ik vaak heb bij de halslijn en achterkant van de armsgaten, heb ik een variatie aan maten gebruikt. De schouders zijn mt 36, de buste mt 42, taille tussen 36 en 38 en heupen mt 40. De kleinere maat voor de schouders werkte erg goed, meestal zijn die wat te ruim en deze keer precies goed, hoera! Voor de rest was het toch ietsje aan de ruime kant, wat ik heb opgelost door de figuurnaad op het achterpand wat in te nemen. Ik denk dat ik het achterpand aan de bovenkant, en het rokdeel een maat kleiner maak, en dat dat het probleem ook verhelpt. Ook ga ik wat wijdte weghalen uit het stuk tussen de schouders en buste, omdat het daar wat flodderig is. Verder ga ik het bovenlijfje ietsje korter maken want de taille zit ietsjes te laag. Ondanks deze opsomming vind ik dit exemplaar prima draagbaar 🙂

The fit of this pattern is quite good. Seeing as I usually have some struggles with the neckline and the back of the armholes I used a mishmash of sizes: 36 for the neck and shoulders, 42 at the bust, between 38 and 40 at the waist, and 40 at the hips. It turned out to be a good idea to use a smaller size for the shoulders, they fit very well, whereas in other dresses I made they’re always a bit big. The rest of the dress turned out a little bit roomy, so next time I’ll make the upper back and the skirt part in a smaller size. This time I deepened and elongated the back dart and that did kind of fix the problem too. Next time I’ll also take some excess fabric out of the front bodice between the bust and the shoulders, and raise the waist about a centimeter. Despite all these things, I think this dress turned out quite wearable 🙂

Omdat het toch een proefmodel was heb ik wat gespeeld met details. Mede omdat de stof een beetje theedoekachtig aandoet 🙂 De naden zijn met rode draad en de driedubbele steek doorgestikt en de knopen zijn ook rood, met ankertjes erop. Beetje marine-achtig. Vind het best leuk geworden!

Since this is a muslin I decided to play around with some detailing. also because the fabric looks a bit like a teatowel 🙂 I topstitched using red thread and the triple stitch. The buttons are also red and have little anchors on them. A bit marine-like.

Edith is het derde patroon van MariaDenmark dat ik heb gemaakt, eerder maakte ik al de Winnie wide legged trousers en ik heb ook een Kirsten Kimono tee gemaakt. Ze heeft nog veel meer leuke patronen, fijne basics met een (in ieder geval die die ik heb gemaakt) goede pasvorm.
