Dit hoef ik jullie vast niet meer te vertellen: ik ben een ontzettende fan van de shirtdress, oftewel de hemdjurk/doorknoopjurk. Waarom klinken de namen van kledingstukken in het nederlands vaak zo veel lomper dan in het engels? In dezelfde categorie: de broekrok 😦

Oke, terug naar het onderwerp. Tijdens het Stoffenspektakel afgelopen voorjaar kocht ik een heel licht en dun spijkerstofje met kleine bloemetjes en een soort tie-dye vlekken erop. Ik wilde er eigenlijk een mouwloze Camí van maken. Maar toen ik dit patroon had gemaakt besloot ik dat dit stofje perfect was voor dit model, maar dan wel met een knoopsluiting die ook doorloopt op de rok en een ‘echte’ knoopsgatenbies.

This is something I probably don’t have to tell you: I am a big fan of shirtdresses. During the bi-annual big fabric market last spring I bought this very light denim, with a tiny floral print and some tie-dye like stains. I intended to make a sleeveless Camí dress with it, but after making this pattern I decided this fabric was perfect for another version of it. This time one with a ‘real’ button placket that extends all the way down.

Een knoopsgatenbies maken is heel makkelijk, vooral als je een beetje slim de breedte bepaalt. Mijn bies is twee keer de naadtoeslag breed, 3 cm in dit geval. Wat je doet is het volgende:

– maak een bies door de laatste 1,5 cm van middenvoor te kopiëren en nog 1,5 cm door te trekken.

– teken een lijn precies in het midden van de bies (op, jawel, 1,5 cm dus 🙂 ). Dit is je nieuwe middenvoor, hier komen de knopen.

– teken nog een keer precies dezelfde bies maar dan in spiegelvorm eraan vast, zodat je bies ook een achterkant heeft. Teken de naadtoeslag.

– herhaal bovenstaande bij de voorkant van je rokdeel.

– knip je bovenlijfje niet op de stofvouw maar twee keer, zonder extra naadtoeslag toe te voegen aan de middenvoor. De laatste 1,5 cm van je bovenlijfje zit nu immers in de knoopsgatenbies verwerkt en is daardoor de naadtoeslag geworden :). Hetzelfde geldt voor de voorkant van je rokdeel.

Making a button placket is quite easy, especially if you use a clever width. I made mine twice the seam allowance, so in total 3 cm. What you need to do is this:

– create a placket by copying the last 1,5 cm from your center front bodice piece, and extend it another 1,5 cm.

– draw a line exactly in the middle of the placket (at, yes, 1,5 cm 🙂 ). That’s the new CF and that’s where your buttons go.

– draw a mirrored placket attatched to the one you just made, this will be the facing. Add seam allowances.

– repeat this process with you skirt front.

– when cutting out your pattern, cut your front bodice out twice instead of on the fold. Don’t add extra seam allowance. The last 1,5 cm of the CF are now in the button placket and so they have become seam allowance :). This also goes for the CF skirt.

I really, really need a haircut…

Het is een heel fijn jurkje geworden, door de lichte stof draagt het erg prettig en het kreukt bijna niet. Ideaal ook om mee te nemen op vakantie straks! Toen ik de stof kocht dacht ik dat de lichte vlekken ge-tie-dye-d waren, maar tijdens het strijken na het voorwassen kwam ik erachter dat het van bleek was. Stinken!

This turned out to be a very comfortable dress, because of the lightweight fabric. And it almost doesn’t wrinkle, which makes it perfect for the upcoming holidays. When I bought the fabric I thought the stains were tie-dyed but when I ironed the fabric after prewashing it, it turned out it was bleached. It smelled horrible!

Als ik dit jurkje opnieuw zou kunnen maken zou ik een aantal dingen anders doen:

– de figuurnaden aan de zijkant hebben een bobbeltje aan het eind. Dat was ook al zo bij het rode exemplaar van deze jurk. Ik heb gegoogeld waar dit door kan komen en ik denk dat ze te ‘breed’ zijn. Door in mijn patroon een cm van de figuurnaad aan de zijkant naar de figuurnaad bij de taille te roteren zou dit beter moeten worden

– ik ben vergeten om het beleg te ‘understitchen’ waardoor die soms wat zichtbaar is. Oeps. Ik ben dit keer overigens niet vergeten om de halslijn te ‘staystitchen’, en daardoor zit die een stuk beter. Hoera!

– de armsgaten toch een klein beetje uitdiepen. Ze zitten niet te strak maar bij het rode exemplaar van deze jurk komen er steeds deodorantvlekken in. Dat zal bij deze jurk wel iets minder opvallen door de kleur, maar jakkes!

– de drukknoopjes écht recht onder elkaar zetten in plaats van een beetje wiebelig scheef 🙂

If I made this dress again I would change a couple of things:

– the side darts are a bit ‘nipply’. This is also the case in the red dress I made from this pattern. I googled this and I think this is due to the dart being too wide. I transfered about a cm from the side dart to the waist dart, which should fix this issue.

– I forgot to understitch the facing, they peek out a bit. Oops. However, this time I didn’t forget to staystitch the neckline and it turned out pretty good. Yay!

– lower the armscyes just a tad. It’s not too tight or anything but I noticed in my red dress that my deodorant stains on them. I don’t think it will be that bad in this dress because of the lighter colour but still, yuck!

– place the snaps in a straight line under each other instead of a wobbly one 🙂

Dat is best veel kritiek, maar het is niet zo dat ik niet blij ben met deze jurk. Ik merk dat ik, doordat ik het patroon zelf heb gemaakt, veel kritischer ben dan wanneer ik iets maak van gekochte patronen. Dat hoort denk ik bij het leerproces, en maakt de resultaten uiteindelijk alleen maar beter.

Wat ook bij het leerproces hoort volgens mij is steeds beter letten op en de tijd nemen voor details. Zoals bijvoorbeeld de onzichtbare handgenaaide zoom en dichtgenaaide knoopsgatenbies, en de handgenaaide ritsen in mijn voorgaande jurken. Zou het zo zijn dat, als we de ‘basics’ onder de knie hebben, we ons steeds meer richten op het perfectioneren van de details? Hoe gaat dat bij jou, hoe loopt jouw leerproces?

That’s a lot of critical remarks. Does that mean I’m not happy with this dress? Not at all! However, because I made this pattern myself I am way more critical then when I’m using a bought pattern. I think that’s part of the learning process, and it only makes for better results in the end.

Something that’s probably also part of the learning process is having more of an eye for, and taking more time to pay attention to detail. Like the invisible, handsewn hem, the slipstitched button placket and the handpicked zippers in my previous dresses. Could it be that, when we’ve got the ‘basic’ skills covered, we tend to pay more and more attention to perfecting the little details? how does this work for you, how does your learning process go?

Ook deze jurk is afgewerkt met een all-in-one beleg. Zonder vlieseline, omdat het zo’n lekker soepel stofje is en ik dat niet stijver wilde maken. En zonder ‘understitching’ dus, maar dat was niet helemaal zoals bedoeld.

Another all-in-one facing. Without fusible interfacing, because this fabric has such a nice drape and airyness and I didn’t want that to get lost. And without understitching, but that was not as intended.

Pauline Alice’s Camí dress

De laatste tijd komen steeds meer bloggers met hun eigen patronenlijn. Zo ook Pauline Alice, vorige week presenteerde zij haar Camí dress. Ik vond ‘m meteen leuk, en na het zien van Lisa en Roisin’s versies was ik helemaal om. Voor ik het wist was het patroon uit de printer gerold. Oke, dat is niet helemaal waar, want onze printer is ‘made in hell‘ en het duurde dus vrij lang voor het patroon daadwerkelijk geprint was.

Lately a lot of sewing bloggers start their own pattern line. Pauline Alice also did this, last week she presented het Camí dress. I immediately liked it, and after seeing Lisa and Roisin’s beautiful versions I was sold. Before I knew it I was printing out the pattern. Ok, that’s not entirely true as our printer is made in hell and it took a while before it actually started to print.

Gelukkig was dat geen voorteken, en ben ik erg in mijn nopjes met het resultaat.

Fortunately that wasn’t an omen and I’m quite pleased with the resulting dress.

Ik wilde graag een zwarte jurk om te combineren met gekleurde panties. Deze stof had ik al, eigenlijk zou ik er een Ceylon van maken. Het is een silicon poplin, een beetje aan de stijve kant maar wel heel geschikt voor dit patroon.

I wanted a black dress to pair with coloured tights. This fabric was originally intended for another Ceylon dress. It’s a silicon poplin, a bit on the stiff side but very well suited for this pattern.

Uh oh, an orb in my sewing room!

Bij het uitknippen van het patroon vond ik de figuurnaden wel erg lang lijken, dus die heb ik met 1,5 cm ingekort. Dat bleek een goede greep, ze zijn nu precies goed. Dit is een maat 38, met net als bij de Edith jurk maat 36 armsgaten en schouders. De mouwen maakte ik een cm breder, omdat ik nogal ~~gespierde~~ stevige bovenarmen heb. De diagnose van mijn naai-juf voor het probleem dat ik bij mijn Ceylon had was namelijk dat het armsgat te ver naar de zijkant zat en de mouw te smal was. Er was in totaal wel genoeg ruimte maar de verdeling was verkeerd en daarom kon ik mijn armen niet omhoog doen. Bij deze jurk heb ik daar geen last van!

Ik ben érg blij met hoe deze jurk past. Zelfs bij de schouder/mouwkop naad, wat normaal nogal een pijnpuntje is.

While cutting out the pattern the bust darts seemed a bit long, so I shortened them by 1,5 cm. That turned out great, as they are just right. I used the 38 size with, just like in my Edith dress, size 36 at the armscyes and the shoulders. The sleeves are widened by a cm because I have quite ~~muscular~~ chubby upper arms. I asked my sewing teacher about the issue I had with my Ceylon dress and she told me that the armscye was too far to the side and the sleeve was too narrow. There was enough room in total but it was distributed wrong. That’s why I couldn’t lift my arms.

The fit turned out great, even at the shoulder/sleeve head seam, which is usually someting I fiddle with.

De taille zit precies op de goede hoogte en het bovenlijfje is wijd genoeg om comfortabel te zijn, maar strak genoeg om slank af te kleden. Win!

The waistline hits right at my natural waist and the bodice is wide enough for comfort and tight enough for a slim look. Win!

Details

Het was vrij lastig om knopen uit te kiezen voor deze jurk. Gelukkig wilde mijn naailes-groepje wel helpen, en kwamen ze met het idee om bijpassend garen te gebruiken om te voorkomen dat het een saai geheel zou worden. Uiteindelijk heb ik dat langs de knoopsgaten gedaan en bij de manchetten. Precies genoeg om op te vallen, en niet teveel. Ik heb nog een beetje getwijfeld om het ook bij de kraag te doen, maar daar heb ik van afgezien.

Choosing buttons for this dress was not easy. Fortunately the other people in my sewing class were happy to help. They suggested these buttons along with matching topstitching, to prevent the dress from being too boring. I did the topstitching on the buttonplackets and the cuffs. Enough to add a nice touch and also not too much. I contemplated topstitching the collar too but in the end chose not to.

Dit was de eerste keer dat ik een kraag met een kraagstaander maakte. Dat was niet makkelijk, maar door de goede instructies prima te doen. Het resultaat ben ik erg trots op!

This was the first collar with collar stand I ever made. It was no picnick, but the clear instructions made it possible to make it succesfully. I’m pleased with how it turned out!

Omdat ik geen fan ben van het inzetten van ritsen in de zijnaad, besloot ik ‘m met de hand in te zetten. Anthea vertelde me laatst dat ze het altijd zo doet en dat dat heel goed lukt, dus ik dacht, laat ik het eens proberen. Een strijkbeurt zou geen overbodige luxe zijn maar hij zit prima dacht ik zo.

Because I’m not a fan of sewing in side zippers I decided to hand pick this one. Anthea told me a while ago that she always does it this way and that it’s not that hard, so I decided to give it a try. It needs a visit from the iron but other than that it’s not too bad.

Al met al was dit een patroon dat best bewerkelijk en ingewikkeld was met de kraag, de manchetten en de rits in de zijnaad. Uiteindelijk heeft het me niet alleen een mooie nieuwe jurk opgeleverd maar voor mijn gevoel ook weer een stap vooruit in mijn naai-skills. Hoera, en dank je wel Pauline Alice!

So all in all this pattern wasn’t easy, with the collar stand, the cuffs and the hand-picked zipper. In the end I don’t only have a pretty new dress, but also made a step forward in my sewing skills. Hurray and thank you, Pauline Alice!

Edith muslin & give-away

Nou, het bleek geen toevalstreffer, dat proefmodel dat ik maakte van de culottes. Het beviel wel goed, om eerst een testexemplaar te maken. Daarnaast heb ik het idee dat ik steeds meer ga snappen van het aanpassen van patronen. En zie hier, het proefmodel van MariaDenmark’s Edith dress!

It wasn’t a one hit wonder, the muslin I made for my Culottes. I quite liked a testrun before making the final garment. And I’m starting to get the hang of getting patterns to fit my body. So I present to you, the wearable muslin of MariaDenmark’s Edith dress!

Meteen toen ik het patroon zag leek het me het perfecte patroon om een blouse mee te maken van de rode gestippelde double gauze die ik in Japan kocht. Ook daarom wilde ik graag een proefmodel kocht, want als die niet goed zou passen, dan was mijn mooie stofje verprutst, en zou ik niet zo makkelijk nieuwe kunnen kopen. Of het zou een goed excuus zijn om weer naar Japan te gaan, hehe.

As soon as I saw the pattern it seemed the perfect pattern to make a blouse of the red polkadotted double gauze I bought in Japan. Another reason to make a muslin, because the blouse needed to fit as I couldn’t just get new fabric if it didn’t. I would give me a good excuse to go back to Japan though, hehe.

Hmmm… I think my plant needs water

De pasvorm van deze jurk is dikke prima. Gezien de ‘problemen’ die ik vaak heb bij de halslijn en achterkant van de armsgaten, heb ik een variatie aan maten gebruikt. De schouders zijn mt 36, de buste mt 42, taille tussen 36 en 38 en heupen mt 40. De kleinere maat voor de schouders werkte erg goed, meestal zijn die wat te ruim en deze keer precies goed, hoera! Voor de rest was het toch ietsje aan de ruime kant, wat ik heb opgelost door de figuurnaad op het achterpand wat in te nemen. Ik denk dat ik het achterpand aan de bovenkant, en het rokdeel een maat kleiner maak, en dat dat het probleem ook verhelpt. Ook ga ik wat wijdte weghalen uit het stuk tussen de schouders en buste, omdat het daar wat flodderig is. Verder ga ik het bovenlijfje ietsje korter maken want de taille zit ietsjes te laag. Ondanks deze opsomming vind ik dit exemplaar prima draagbaar 🙂

The fit of this pattern is quite good. Seeing as I usually have some struggles with the neckline and the back of the armholes I used a mishmash of sizes: 36 for the neck and shoulders, 42 at the bust, between 38 and 40 at the waist, and 40 at the hips. It turned out to be a good idea to use a smaller size for the shoulders, they fit very well, whereas in other dresses I made they’re always a bit big. The rest of the dress turned out a little bit roomy, so next time I’ll make the upper back and the skirt part in a smaller size. This time I deepened and elongated the back dart and that did kind of fix the problem too. Next time I’ll also take some excess fabric out of the front bodice between the bust and the shoulders, and raise the waist about a centimeter. Despite all these things, I think this dress turned out quite wearable 🙂

Omdat het toch een proefmodel was heb ik wat gespeeld met details. Mede omdat de stof een beetje theedoekachtig aandoet 🙂 De naden zijn met rode draad en de driedubbele steek doorgestikt en de knopen zijn ook rood, met ankertjes erop. Beetje marine-achtig. Vind het best leuk geworden!

Since this is a muslin I decided to play around with some detailing. also because the fabric looks a bit like a teatowel 🙂 I topstitched using red thread and the triple stitch. The buttons are also red and have little anchors on them. A bit marine-like.

Edith is het derde patroon van MariaDenmark dat ik heb gemaakt, eerder maakte ik al de Winnie wide legged trousers en ik heb ook een Kirsten Kimono tee gemaakt. Ze heeft nog veel meer leuke patronen, fijne basics met een (in ieder geval die die ik heb gemaakt) goede pasvorm. Ook schrijft ze een leuke nieuwsbrief met naaitips, informatie over nieuwe patronen en aanbiedingen (wie houdt er nou niet van een leuke aanbieding?). Colette Ceylon

Vrijdag vertelde ik al dat hij bijna af was, mijn Ceylon jurk. Gezien het prachtige Hollandse zomerweer was dit weekend een mooie gelegenheid om hem af te maken.

Friday I told you that it was almost finished, my Ceylon dress. And thanks to the marvellous Dutch summer weather we’re experiencing at the moment, it was a good weekend to finish it.

Dit patroon vond ik vanaf de eerste keer dat ik het zag erg mooi. Ik was alleen een beetje bang dat het mijn schouders ontzettend breed zou maken. Gelukkig blijkt dat helemaal niet zo te zijn.

From the first time I saw this pattern I really liked it. I was a bit worried that it would make my shoulders look very broad. Fortunately that is not the case at all.

De stof die ik gebruikte kocht ik bij de stoffenwinkel hier in Leeuwarden. Het is katoen, maar een beetje stijfjes nog door de verf denk ik. Ik hoop dat het nog wat soepeler wordt na een paar keer wassen, zodat het middenrif-stuk wat minder kreukt (op de foto valt dat meer op dan in het echt).

The fabric comes from my local fabric store. It’s a cotton and a bit stiff, I think due to the dye. I’m hoping it will soften up a bit after washing it a few times, so that the midriff section doesn’t crease as much (which shows much more in the photo’s than in real life).

Qua pasvorm is het geen perfecte jurk. Vooral het achterpand heb ik wat mee zitten pielen, omdat het véél te groot was aan de bovenkant. Dat had ik kunnen weten, want dat is iets waar ik vaker last van heb. Ik leek de klokkenluider van de Notre Dame wel! Gelukkig is er voor dat soort situaties mijn naai-juf. Die gaf twee opties: een extra naad in het midden maken om het teveel aan stof te verminderen, of alles loshalen en het hele patroondeel kleiner maken en dan opnieuw innaaien. Uiteraard koos ik voor optie 1.

Fit wise this dress is nowhere near perfect. I have been messing with the bodice back, because it was way too big. Which I could have known because I experience that a lot. It made me look like the hunchback of the Notre Dame.. not a good look! Luckily in these cases there is always my sewing teacher. She gave me two options: make an extra seam in the back to reduce the amount of fabric, or take the whole back bodice apart,make it smaller and resew. Ofcourse I went for the first option.

Het was alleen niet het enige probleem wat ik tegenkwam. Er is ook iets niet goed met de mouwen of het armgat. Ik kan mijn armen niet omhoog doen…

It wasn’t the only problem I’ve encountered. There is something wrong with the sleeves or the armsceyes. I can’t lift my arms when wearing this dress…

Iemand enig idee hoe ik dit kan verhelpen? Ik zou graag nog een exemplaar van deze jurk maken, maar dan eentje waarin ik mijn armen wat meer kan bewegen!

Does anyone have an idea how I can fix this? I would love to make another version of this dress, preferably one in which I can lift my arms!

Op deze foto zie je ook dat het niet helemaal goed zit bij de mouwen.

Ondanks de issues ben ik wel heel blij met mijn Ceylon! Ik blijf het een mooi model vinden, en ben ook erg content met mijn stofkeuze. Hij zit ook lekker (bovendien, wanneer doe je je armen nou omhoog?). Ik vermoed dat dit niet het laatste exemplaar van dit patroon is, een zwarte met lange mouwen voor de winter lijkt me bijvoorbeeld ook een prima idee!

Despite it’s issues I’m pretty happy with my Ceylon! I love the shape of it and I’m happy with my fabric choice. It’s also quite comfortable (and who raises the arms anyway?). I suspect this won’t be my only rendition of this pattern. A black version with long sleeves for winter sounds like a good plan to me!

Something old, something new

Een tijdje terug won ik dit patroon uit 1966 bij een give-away van Dottie Doodle. Ik vond het zo’n leuk patroontje dat ik er meteen maar mee begon. Maar halverwege had ik er opeens geen zin meer in. Uiteindelijk even de tanden op elkaar gezet en ‘m toch maar afgemaakt. Gelukkig 🙂

Some time ago I won this pattern from 1966 in a give-away at Dottie Doodle. I liked it so much I started making it right away. But after a while, I kind of got bored with it. 2 Weeks ago I gave myself a little kick in the behind and got it finished. Luckily 🙂

De maattabel op de envelop gaf aan dat de borst- en taillewijdte iets aan de kleine kant zouden zijn. Maar dat leek me geen probleem als ik aan de zij- en mouwnaden een centimeter extra naadtoeslag zou aanknippen en vervolgens wel gewoon op 1,5 cm zou naaien. Toen ik het patroon uitpakte, bleek dat de vorige eigenaresse dat zelfde idee ook gehad had. Wat zeggen ze ook alweer over ‘great minds’?

The sizing chart on the enveloppe said that the bust and waist would be too small. It didn’t seem like a problem, I thought I could just add an extra cm on the sleeve and side seams. As I unwrapped the pattern, I saw that the previous owner had had the same idea. What is that thing they say again about ‘great minds’?

Uiteindelijk is de maat dikke prima. Alleen bij de heupen moest ik ‘m wat innemen. Gelukkig wilde de naai-juf wel helpen met afspelden, want zelf doen is altijd een beetje behelpen. Het enige waar ik nu nog niet helemaal tevreden over ben is de kraag, omdat er wat ruimte zit bij mijn schouders valt die niet helemaal mooi (en ok, het was de eerste die ik naaide, dus misschien is de afwerking ook wel niet helemaal strak). Maar door het drukke stofje zie je dat bijna niet.

In the end the size was just fine. I only had to take it in a bit in the hips. My sewing teacher helped with the pinning, it’s always so fiddly to do myself. The only thing I’m not really happy about is the collar. There is some room in the shoulder area and therefore it is a bit off (the fact that this is my first ever collar doesn’t help either I guess). The busy print helps in hiding this though.

Al met al ben ik heel tevreden, het is een mooi getailleerd model en de stof vind ik ook erg leuk. Hopelijk wordt het nog wat soepeler na een paar keer wassen, want het is een beetje stijf.

All in all I’m very pleased, it’s nicely fitted and I really like the fabric. Hopefully it will soften a little after washing because it’s quite stiff.

Up next is weer een Renfrew-jurk, dit keer eentje met col. Het koude weer komt er immers weer aan… Tot nu toe vind ik dat helemaal niet erg, herfst is mijn favoriete seizoen (totdat de lente begint, wat dat betreft ben ik heel flexibel haha).
