Gertie’s pencil skirt

Sommige patronen bevallen zo goed dat ze een ‘go to’ worden voor een bepaald type kledingstuk. De kokerrok uit ‘Gerties new book for better sewing’ is zo’n patroon voor mij. Ik maakte hem al drie keer eerder: één met ruitjes, één met een tropische print, en één die anoniem in de kledingkast is verdwenen 🙂 Dit keer maakte ik ‘m van een stretch keper katoen, afgewerkt met een of ander laagje waardoor de goede kant van de stof bijna als een soort suede aanvoelt. Dat was niet wat mij zo trok in dit stofje – dat was de kleur en de print.

Some patterns just fit so well they become a TNT – Tried and True. For me, the pencil skirt from Gerties new book for better sewing is one of those patterns. It’s my go-to pencil skirt pattern. I made it three times so far: a plaid one, a loud tropical print one and an unblogged one. This time I used a stretch cotton twill with some sort of finish on the right side of the fabric that makes it feel a bit suede-like. That’s not what drew my attention to this fabric though – it was the colour and the print.

Na de drie eerdere versies besloot ik een kleine wijziging te doen aan het patroon. Ik haalde wat lengte van de bovenkant van het voorpand af. Anderhalve centimeter middenvoor, uitlopend tot niks aan de zijkanten. Daar bobbelde het bij mijn andere rokjes namelijk een beetje. Ik heb dat wel vaker bij rokjes.

After the previous three versions I decided to do a little alteration to the pattern. I took out some lenght at the top of the front. 1.5 Centimeter at center front, tapering to nothing at the side seams. On the other skirts I noticed there was some excess fabric there.

Verder veranderde ik de loopsplit in een verdekte loopsplit. De split in mijn Oonapalooza rokje is een paar keer gescheurd en dat wilde ik liever niet nog een keer. Bovendien ziet het er ook een beetje sjieker uit, al zeg ik het zelf.

I also changed the slit at the CB into a walking vent. The slit of my Oonapalooza skirt tore a few times and I didn’t want that to happen again. It also looks a bit more fancy I think.

Verder heb ik eigenlijk niet zoveel te vertellen over deze rok… Ja, nog dat de knopen aan de tailleband van de 100 yen shop in Japan komen. Heerlijke sneupwinkeltjes zijn dat!

There’s not much more to say about this skirt really… Just that the buttons on the waistband are from the 100 yen shop in Japan. Great places to snoop!

De print vind ik echt heel tof, maar ik heb bij het knippen van het patroon wel even opgelet dat ik geen schaamlap-boeketje creëerde 🙂

I love the print, but I did pay attention to avoid making a floral fig leaf while cutting the fabric 🙂

Ken je de Sewcialists? Er is een blog, en een ‘firehose‘. De firehose is leuk om een keer te bekijken, je kan je blog eraan koppelen en het is een soort feed van alle nieuwe posts van gekoppelde blogs. Op de blog is er elke maand een thema waaraan je mee kan doen. Soms is het een kleur, zoals Pink April en Blue February, en deze maand is het Oonapalooza!

The firehose is real fun to check out, you can sign up your blog and it’s kind of a feed that shows all new posts of the blogs that are signed up. The blog is all about a monthly theme which you can sew along with. Sometimes the theme is a colour, like Pink April and Blue February, and this month it’s Oonapalooza!

De stof ervoor kocht ik een poosje terug tijdens mijn lunchpauze, op de stoffenmarkt in Emmen. Vervelend hoor, een wekelijkse stoffenmarkt vlakbij je werk 😉

I bought the fabric a few weeks ago when I used my lunch break to visit the fabric market in the town I work. Really annoying, to have a weekly fabric market close to work 😉

Ja, het is fel en het is een opvallende print. Perfect voor dit thema, want als je op Oona haar blog kijkt dan zie je al snel dat bijna alles wat ze maakt daarom draait. Je ziet dan ook dat ze goeie vriendjes is met de camera, iets wat ik nog wel eens lastig vind. Daarom besloot ik om een beetje te experimenteren met ‘poses’ vanmiddag en dat is volgens mij best aardig gelukt!

Yes, it is bright and it has a loud print. Perfect for the occasion, because as you can see on her blog Oona’s middle names are probably ‘bright’ and ‘loud print’. You can also see that she and the camera are good friends, something I struggle with sometimes. So this afternoon I decided to experiment a bit with a bit of ‘posing’ and I think it turned out quite well!

Een kokerrokje! Het patroon komt uit Gerties new book for better sewing en ik gebruikte het al eerder voor dit rokje. Net als vorige keer maakte ik maat 6. Dit keer moest ik het iets innemen bij de heupen omdat de stof wat stretch heeft.

A pencil skirt! The pattern is from Gerties new book for better sewing and I used it before to make this skirt. Just like last time I made the size 6. This time I had to take it in a bit at the hips because this fabric has some stretch.

Het zit heerlijk door die stretch, nauwsluitend maar niet té strak. En ik vind de stof zo gaaf, felle kleuren, bloemen, rode panterprint, heerlijk!

It’s a very comfortable skirt. Figure hugging but not too tight. And I LOVE the fabric, the bright colours, the flowers, the red panther print, fabulous!

Nou, dit is ook wel een hele gewaagde pose inderdaad…

Ik weet niet zo goed wat ik verder nog over mijn rokje moet zeggen 🙂 het is een vrij simpel model, met een onzichtbare rits en een knoop op de tailleband middenachter en 8 figuurnaden die zorgen voor de vorm. De zoom naaide ik met de hand en hetzelfde geldt voor de binnenkant van de tailleband.

I don’t really know what else to say about this skirt 🙂 It’s a fairly simple shape, it closes with an invisible zip at the back and a button on the waistband, and it has 8 waist darts which provide the shaping. The seam is handsewn and the same goes for the waistband facing.

Zullen we het ook nog even over de knoop hebben? Hij lag al een poosje in mijn voorraad te wachten op een bestemming, en ik ben blij dat ik die eindelijk gevonden heb. Ik kreeg deze knoop van Tine twee jaar geleden bij de Summer Sewing Swap. Dat maakt dit toch een écht community-project 🙂

Can we talk about the button a bit please? It has been in my stash for a while, waiting patiently for it’s destination, and I am glad I finally found it. I got this button from Tine two years ago at the Summer Sewing Swap. So this is a real community-project 🙂

Het mooie van zoveel kleuren in één rokje is dat er ook veel van mijn vestjes bijpassen. Good old zwart natuurlijk, maar ook deze twee:

The best thing about so many colours in one skirt is that it matches a lot of my cardigans. The good old black ones ofcourse, but also these two:

Ik gok dat ik nog veel plezier aan dit rokje ga beleven. Bedankt alle Sewcialists, voor de nooit eindigende inspiratie en uiteraard ook Oona, die mijn stofjes-radar liet aanslaan op dit stofje dat ik anders echt nooit uitgezocht zou hebben. En voor het zetje om uit mijn comfort zone voor de camera te stappen!

I think this will be a skirt that gets worn often. Thank you, all Sewcialists for the neverending inpsiration and thank you Oona, for letting my fabric-radar detect this fabric which I would never have chosen otherwise. And also for giving me the push to get out of my comfort zone in front of the camera!

Day 15

De kokerrok uit Gerties new book for better sewing. Ik draag deze niet vaak, omdat ik niet zo goed wist hoe ik ‘m moest combineren. En omdat de tailleband na de lunch wat te strak was als ik zat 😁 Maar mijn nieuwe paarse vest past er perfect bij en of de lunch was niet zo groot of mijn taille is iets kleiner geworden want ook na de lunch kon ik nog comfortabel zitten. Hoera!

My pencil skirt from Gerties new book for better sewing. I have worn this skirt only twice since making it, because I didn’t know what to pair it with and because the waistband got a bit uncomfortable when I sat down after lunch 😁 I discovered that my new purple cardigan is a perfect match and either my lunch was not that big or my waist has shrunk a bit because I could still sit comfortably after lunch. Hurray!

Day 16

2013 Recap – misses

Lekker positief ook, om daarmee het nieuwe jaar te beginnen 😉 Dat doen we dus even anders!

Yeah that’s a nice, positive start for the new year 😉 so let’s do that differently!

Voor jullie allemaal. Ik zeg het niet zo vaak maar ik ben superblij dat jullie hier zijn en tijd nemen om mijn hersenspinsels en handenmaaksels te bekijken, en er ook nog op te reageren! Op mijn telefoon heb ik een WordPress app en elke keer als er een melding is dat er een nieuwe reactie of ‘like’ is dan maakt dat mijn dag. Bedankt daarvoor!

To all of you. I don’t say this often but I’m so happy that you are here and taking time to read my ramblings and take a look at the things I make. I have a WordPress app on my phone and it brightens my day every time it tells me that there is a new comment or ‘like’. So thank you for that!

En dan nu de wat minder geslaagde projecten van 2013.

And now the less succesfull projects of 2013.

1. Pied de poule rokje / Houndstooth skirt

2. Edith blouse

Ze zijn beide echt niet mislukt ofzo, maar wat er denk ik mis bij ging is dat mijn verwachtingen te hooggespannen waren. Het waren beide dingen die ik al een tijd wilde maken en waar ik aan begon terwijl ik er eigenlijk geen zin in had, maar vond ‘dat het er toch maar eens van moest komen’. Dat is dus geen recept voor succes…

Hetgeen waar ik niet tevreden over ben kan bij beide makkelijk aangepast worden, maar het feit dat ik dat nog niet heb gedaan zegt genoeg denk ik.

Both are in no way a failure, but what I think went wrong is that I had such high hopes for these garments. Both are things I wanted to make for some time, and started when I wasn’t really feeling it. But I thought I just had to ‘get it over with’. Not quite the recipe for a succes…

The things that I’m not happy about are easily fixed, and the fact that I haven’t done that says enough.

3. Polka dot frock fest NL 6000

De mouwen en armsgaten zaten veel te strak, en ik kon maar niet wennen aan het zij-aanzicht. Bovendien geeft de rits mijn achterste nogal een ehm, onnatuurlijke look. Hij ligt al in de prullenmand.

The sleeves and armscyes were way too tight and I couldn’t get used to the way it looks from the side. And on top of that, the zipper gives my behind kind of an ehm, unnatural look. It has been binned.

4. BurdaStyle 2-13-127

Slechte pasvorm en veel te flutterige stof naar mijn smaak. Hij ligt nog ergens in de kast, onderop de stapel, en daar is alles wel mee gezegd 🙂 het patroon vind ik nog steeds wel erg leuk dus wie weet probeer ik hem nog eens, met wat aanpassingen.

Bad fit and the fabric is too flimsy for my taste. It still in my closet, somewhere on the bottom of a pile, that says it all 🙂 I still like the pattern though, so who knows it will be revisited sometime, with a few adjustments.

En hoewel het een top 5 is, kom ik maar tot 4. En aangezien één van mijn doelen voor afgelopen jaar was om vooral dingen te maken die ik zelf leuk vind, en geen dingen waarvan ik denk dat anderen ze leuk vinden, ben ik daar zeer tevreden over!

And though this is a top 5, these 4 are the only I can come up with. And since one of my goals for 2013 was to make only things I like, and not things I think other people will like, I’m really pleased with that!

Er zijn nog wel een paar dingen die ik heb gemaakt en niet vaak draag omdat ze niet zo goed bij mijn ‘lifestyle’ passen, zoals bijvoorbeeld mijn geruite pencilskirt. Maar die vind ik nog steeds wel heel mooi, dus dat vind ik geen ‘miss’.

There are some things I’ve made that I don’t wear a lot, because they don’t really suit my ‘lifestyle’. Like my plaid pencil skirt. But I still really like them, so I don’t want to call them a ‘miss’.

Al met al ben ik zeer tevreden over wat ik dit jaar heb gemaakt. Ik heb het idee dat ik gegroeid ben in wat ik kan en hoe ik dingen maak, hopelijk zet die trend zich door in 2014!

All in all I’m really happy with what I’ve sewed this year. I feel my sewing skills have progressed a lot, I’ve learned new things and work much more precise. Hopefully this trend will continue in 2014!

A good match

Een poosje terug schreef ik er al over, en nu is ‘ie dan eindelijk af: de kokerrok uit Gerties new book for better sewing! Het is geen moeilijk patroon, maar ik deed er toch vrij lang over. Ik wilde namelijk graag alle ruiten in de stof laten doorlopen, en dat betekent precisiewerk. Normaal ben ik meer van de grote lijnen dan van de details, dus dat was hard werken voor mij.

A while ago I talked about wanting to make this skirt, and now it’s finally finished: the pencil skirt from Gerties new book for better sewing. It’s not a difficult pattern but it did take forever to finish, because I wanted the plaid to match at all the seams. So precision sewing it was, not something I normally do. Cutting corners is my middle name.

Gelukkig is het allemaal gelukt met de ruiten en ben ik erg blij met het resultaat. Deze stof zou ik niet zo snel zelf uitkiezen in de winkel, maar is het resultaat van een ruiltje via twitter. Toen ik ‘m op tafel legde om het patroon erop te spelden leek het net een tafelkleed 🙂 Maar hé, soms moet je gewoon eens iets proberen toch? En ik vind het oranje met het paars erg leuk, een beetje retro. Een kokerrok leek me dus de perfecte keus voor deze stof!

Fortunately the plaid-matching went well and I’m happy with my skirt. I wouldn’t have chosen this fabric in a store myself, but I recieved it in a twitter swap. When I laid it out on my table to pin the pattern on it, it looked pretty much like a table cloth 🙂 But hey, sometimes you just have to try someting, right? And I like the purple and orange together, it looks a little retro. So I thought a pencil skirt would be the perfect choice for this fabric!

Kijk eens aan, al die doorlopende ruiten. Hoera!

Misschien moet ik de figuurnaden bij mijn buik nog een beetje langer maken, want het zit daar nog een beetje flutterig. Overigens is dat het enige dat niet helemaal mooi valt, voor de rest hoefde ik het patroon helemaal niet aan te passen. Wel heb ik mijn rokje een stuk korter gemaakt zodat het net onder de knie valt. Langer staat mij niet zo mooi, want ik ben niet zo lang en heb door jarenlang voetballen vrij stevige kuiten.

Maybe I should make the darts in the front a little bit longer, as there is a bit of pooling going on. Other than that the fit is like this straight out the envelope. The only thing I changed was the length, I shortened the skirt to it hits just below the knee. Longer than that doesn’t really look good on me, as I’m not that tall and years of playing soccer gave me quite muscular calves.

Ook denk ik er over om nog bretels voor dit rokje te maken, zoals die er ook zijn voor Burdastyle’s Jenny. Zou het lukken om die zo te maken dat ze afneembaar zijn? Hoe zou ik dat het beste kunnen doen? Ik hoor graag jullie tips!

I’m pondering making suspenders for this skirt, just like on Burdastyle’s Jenny skirt. Would it be possible to make them removable? And how would I do that? I’d love to hear your tips!
