Tsja, de titel zegt het al een beetje, ik twijfel over deze jurk. Ik wil hem héél graag leuk vinden, want ik vind hem wel mooi, maar de pasvorm is gewoon niet je van het en daardoor voelt ‘ie niet helemaal goed.
Well, as the title of this post suggests, I’m not sure I really like this dress. I really want to like it, because I think it turned out pretty, but the fit is just that bit off and it doesn’t feel good when I wear it.
De combinatie van stoffen heb ik schaamteloos gekopieerd van iemand op Facebook. Beide stoffen zijn punto di roma’s van Driessen stoffen. Het witte elastieken paspel komt van de Jan Sikkes in Leeuwarden. Het patroon is jurk 6 uit de Knipmode van februari. Dit is maat 38. Ik haalde en centimeter lengte uit het bovenlijf tussen oksel en buste en verlaagde de halslijn naar die van maat 54. In eerste instantie verhoogde ik de armsgaten met een centimeter maar dat haalde ik er later weer af. Als laatste nam ik de taille wat in, zodat die mooi aansluit.
The combination of fabrics is a shameless copy of someone on Facebook. Both fabrics are ponte knits from Driessen fabrics. The white elastic piping is from my local fabric shop. The pattern is dress 6 from the february Knipmode issue. It’s a size 38, and I removed a centimetre of length between armhole and bust. I also lowered the neckline to that of the size 54. At first I raised the armholes by a centimetre too, but later removed that. Finally I took it in a bit at the waist.

The sleeves have a dart at the top, which is a nice feature.
Het zijaanzicht is één van de dingen die ik niet zo tof vind aan deze jurk. Ik weet niet of het door de patroondelen komt of door het paspelelastiek, maar het ziet er een beetje raar uit vind ik. Het teveel aan lengte op de rug werkt ook niet echt mee. Bovendien denk ik dat de halslijn aan de achterkant iets lager had moeten zijn, want de jurk trekt wat naar achteren.
The side view is one of the thinks I’m not too fond of. I don’t know if it’s the pattern lines or the elastic piping but it looks a bit weird. The excess length on the back doesn’t help either and I think the back neckline is slightly too high because the dress pulls backwards a bit.
De mensen van de Knip zeiden dat het model afkleedt als je de buitenste stof van een donkerdere kleur maakt… misschien moeten ze dan het middelste patroondeel bij de heupen ook wat minder breed maken 🙂
The people at Knipmode said that this dress makes you look slimmer if you use a darker fabric for the outer pieces… Perhaps they could have made the centre piece a bit smaller at the hips then 🙂
Ook bij deze jurk zitten de armsgaten weer wat raar, net als bij de groene die ik maakte. Door de twee verschillende kleuren valt het ook nog eens extra op, of zit dat misschien alleen in mijn hoofd?
This dress also has the armhole-issue that my green dress had. The two different fabrics make it even more noticeable. Or maybe that’s just my inner perfectionist acting up and it’s not that bad?
Het laatste wat ik te zeuren heb is dat ik de rok teveel taps vind toelopen. Iets rechter zou beter staan denk ik.
My final complaint is that the skirt tapers in a bit too much for my taste. I think it would look better if it were just a bit more straight.

Maar goed, even zonder geintjes. Ik hoor graag jouw objectieve mening over deze jurk. Ik heb nogal eens last van perfectionisme en eerlijk gezegd heb ik in geen jaren zo’n nauwsluitende jurk gedragen. Een strak bovenlijfje wel, maar niet een complete jurk. Het kan dus ook zomaar zijn dat ik er gewoon even aan moet wennen. En daarom: meningen graag! U wordt bij voorbaat hartelijk bedankt 🙂
But all joking aside: I would really like to hear your opinion about this dress. I have these perfectionist tendencies and to be honest it has been years since I wore a fitted dress like this. A fitted bodice is familiar territory, but not a complete dress. It may as well be that I’m just not used to it. So, honest opinions please! Thanks in advance 🙂

Qua figuur kun je het absoluut hebben, en ik vind de taps toelopende rok juist erg mooi, de jurk wordt anders misschien te blokkig of zwaar van onder.
Over de billen: mee eens, ik vind dit ook te. Niet dat je er dikke billen van krijgt maar het trekt wel heel erg de aandacht, ongewenste aandacht ook, lijkt me 😦 Ik moet zelfs aaneen bepaalde diersoort denken met opvallend gekleurde billen… 🙊 Zwart, gewoon effen lijkt me veeeel mooier voor de achterkant bijvoorbeeld… Of desnoods een mooie rode druppelvorm oid op je rug alleen…
De zwarte stroken lijken me naast je schouders/armen ook net wat te breed. Vooral naar je oksel toe. De mouwen hebben bovenaan wel wat ruimte lijkt, dus wat bijknippen en opnieuw aanzetten?
Zo, das een uitgebreide review, ik hoop maar dat je het ook echt wilde horen! 😉

Bedankt voor je reactie, ik wilde het echt horen inderdaad 🙂 Ik zou de mouwen aan de onderkant wat kunnen loshalen en dan zowel mouw als bovenlijfje een beetje innemen. Dat wordt dan wel een lockstiksel lostornen maar dat moet dan maar 😉 Voor een eventuele volgende keer is de achterkant in één kleur een mooie optie, ik denk dat dat het geheel wel wat rustiger aan het oog maakt ook. Heel erg bedankt!
I think this dress looks amazing on you. Really, from the front it looks fab. Ok, maybe some slight adjustment for length at the back but I think you should make it again!
Thank you Manju! I think the elastic piping exaggerates the extra length in the back too, because it’s really not that much but it feels like it’s just so obvious.
Je kunt hem hebben Inge, zeker met jou maatje 36, ik vind de halslijn prachtig en de kleuren ook. Wel snap ik dat je de rug-lengte iets te veel vind, maar dat is zeker geen reden om deze slanke jurk af te keuren. Hij is in ieder geval weer prachtig gemaakt!

It may be that you’re not comfortable wearing a fitted dress, because the whole thing looks fine. Also, the back doesn’t look too long – just pull it down so it doesn’t bunch over the back of your waist.
Thank you Ebi! The elastic piping keeps pulling the dress back up when I pull it down, I think this also has to do with the back neck begin too high.
Staat je super! Enige dat ik zou opmerken is het overtollige stukje stof op je rug. Ik heb dat ook vaak en dan moet dan weggenomen worden.

I understand your anoyance since you are a fitting master, I think that If this dress is one that you would like to keep wearing than I think it’s worth to take the time and get it fit as you like it. I also like the colours and the pipping details.

I don’t think you’re being fussy at all. Your makes usually fit you so well, and this one doesn’t – those armholes are a no-no. And they flatter you – whereas this one does not – especially from the back. You have a very nice figure, but this dress does it no justice. Those princess seams are weird. From the side, most of all. The back needs a sway back adjustment – and you don’t have a sway back.. The colours and your piping/sewing are great, otherwise I’d call it a wadder. Hope you don’t mind the extreme honesty, but really, I am so used to seeing you in gorgeous makes that fit you well that I was taken aback when I saw this.
Thank you Francesca. I don’t mind your honesty at all, it’s what I was looking for! I agree that the seams are just weird from the side. They make my boobs look flat and my belly, well, not, haha. I do like how the princess seams look from the front though. Maybe it’s just that I don’t like it enough to wear it but I also don’t hate it enough to throw away. I might try to fix those armhole and back neck issues to see if that helps. Or maybe just remove the sleeves and wear it with a black cardigan. I’m ok with something that isn’t the most flattering if I feel good in it. Thanks again, I really appreciate it!
Hi, I love your dress and you’ve inspired me to get this pattern, as I like the design, but I have chosen to purchase the top version instead. As I don’t speak Dutch, Google translate can only go so far (doesn’t capture everything!) and some things I am trying to work out regarding this pattern:
The neckband strip: what are the measurements given on the pattern?
I don’t see any facings for this pattern, so am I right to believe that the piping acts as a facing, you attach it to the seamline and you baste it down and then from the right side up, you flip the raw edge underneath (piping cord is exposed) and stitch it down near the piping edge with a twin needle to secure it?
As I cannot find elastic piping (I don’t know what it is called in Dutch), would ordinary cotton piping be sufficient?

Hi Tanya, thank you! What fabrics are you using for your top?
The length of the neckband strip depends on the size you want to make. The neckband is called ‘halsbies’ in Dutch. In the instructions you’ll find a chart that says ‘teken de volgende patroondelen zelf’ The measurements under ‘halsbies-voorpand’ are the length and width of the front neckband en under ‘halsbies-achterpand’ are those for the back neckband. You only have to cut one of each.
The pattern doesn’t have a facing. What you say is correct, the piping acts as a facing. I topstitched it down with a zigzag but you can also use a twin needle.
Elastic piping in Dutch is called ‘rekbaar paspelband’ or ‘elastisch paspelband’. Regular piping is just ‘paspelband’. The one I used is the same as this: http://www.kleurenmix.nl/Webwinkel-Category-2143989/elastisch%20paspelband.html it’s actually elastic with a shiny, bit thicker edge on one side. I don’t think regular piping will do as it doesn’t stretch.

I am searching for the same type of jersey/knit fabric with the navy/blue stripes, as shown in the picture on the for the top on the knipmode website. I have seen it on Fabric.com, in the United States, but as I am based in the UK, I think the postage/shipping being requested is too expensive!! I think I have an excuse to take another trip to the Netherlands for more fabric buying!! Utrecht Saturday market and Amsterdam Nordmarket, here I come!!!
The colors & piping on this dress are fabulous and make it very striking.
I can see what is annoying you and I’d probably feel the same.
I tend not to sew dresses with sleeves as even in winter I find them a little hot – so I’m no expert on ponte sleeves.
However I do own several ponte (sleeveless) work dresses (RTW) and as they aren’t often lined I do find on various days they don’t always sit & fit the way I might like as they don’t ‘hang’ like a dress with lining. So any lumps and bumps or fitting issues seem amplified and the weight of ponte also contributes to that. But some days they let ok amazing!
No help really but I do love the dress concept and I think maybe if you put it in the ‘naughty corner’ for a while you may either 1) find a solution or 2) decide if you love or loathe it.
It’s always tricky when you sew a style you don’t often wear to assess it & feel comfortable in it at first.
