Toen we afgelopen vrijdag wakker werden had onze kat Patser opeens ademhalingsproblemen. Hij was duidelijk benauwd en haalde heel rochelend adem. Hij voelde zich zo beroerd dat hij bijna niet tegenstribbelde toen we hem in zijn reismand deden om naar de dierenarts te gaan, terwijl het toch een heel temperamentvol beestje is. Daar aangekomen bleek dat hij vocht bij z’n longen had, en dat z’n temperatuur te laag was. Ze hebben hem vochtafdrijvers gegeven en in een couveuse met extra zuurstof gelegd. Er waren twee scenario’s: of hij zou er van opknappen, of het zou niet helpen en dan zou hij overlijden. Dat was wel even schrikken. Bezorgd en zonder kat gingen we naar huis. Aan het eind van de middag mochten we bellen hoe het was. Ik was er helemaal sip van, hij voelde zich duidelijk zo beroerd, arm schaap!

Wat doe je dan, tijdens zo’n lange dag afwachten? Naar de stoffenwinkel natuurlijk voor een beetje Retail therapy!

 

Last Friday when we woke up we found our cat having a really hard time breathing. He was feeling so bad that he almost didn’t resist when we put him in his basket to go to the vet, while this is usually quite the struggle. The vet told us he had fluid at his lungs, and that his temperature was too low. She gave him diuretics and put him in an incubator with extra oxigen. There were two possible outcomes: either it would make him feel better or it wouldn’t and that would mean he would die. So that was scary. We went home really worried. At the end of the day we could call to see how he was doing. I was really sad because he obviously felt very bad, poor thing!

So what to do with such a long day of waiting ahead? To the fabric shop for some Retail therapy ofcourse!

 

Ik wou graag een wat stevigere stof voor een halve cirkelrok, geïnspireerd door Megan Nielsen haar brocade rok.

 

I wanted a bit of a stiff fabric for a half circle skirt, inspired by Megan Nielsen’s brocade number.

 

 

Dit is ‘m geworden. Ik viel voor de kleuren, het roze met de blauwe en oranje bloemen. De grote ruiten erop vond ik wat minder maar ik hoopte dat dat niet zo zou opvallen eens verwerkt. Het is een viscose mix, vrij stevig maar wel met stretch, de meeste in de lengte. Als een soort last-minute ingeving maakte ik een stolpplooi op middenvoor. Verder is het gewoon een standaard halve cirkel zoals ik die zo vaak aan mijn jurken heb gemaakt. Een rechte tailleband erop et voila.

So I went for this fabric. I fell for the colours, the pink with the blue and orange flowers. I don’t really care for the plaids, but I hoped they wouldn’t be as abvious once it became a skirt. It’s a viscose mix, quite firm and with some stretch, most of it lengthwise. I had a last-minute idea to add an inverted pleat at CF. Everything else is just a regular half circle like on many dresses I made. I put on a straight waistband et voila.

 

 

 

Ik las laatst ergens een tip om foto’s vanuit een laag perspectief te maken omdat je benen dan langer lijken. Nou, dat werkt! Voor mijn gevoel verandert het ook totaal mijn lichaamsverhoudingen maar goed 🙂 de bovenste foto is de rok zoals ‘ie is. De plooi lijkt zo een beetje scheef te zitten maar dat komt meer door de manier waarop ik sta. De onderste foto is met petticoat, dat geeft nóg meer volume.

I read somewhere that it’s a good idea to take photo’s from a low perspective, because it would make your legs look longer. Wel, it certainly does! I feel like it also completely changes the propportions of my body. oh well 🙂 The top picture is the skirt as is. The pleat looks a bit crooked but that’s because of the way I’m standing. The bottom picture is with petticoat for added volume.

 

 

 

De zij- en achterkant. Als ik die laatste die zo zie dan had ik wat beter m’n best kunnen doen om de roze vlakken of te centreren of juist te zorgen dat ze niet direct naast elkaar zaten. Maar dit was gewoon een quick and dirty ontstressend naaiproject dus daar heb ik compleet niet aan gedacht. Ik vind het al heel wat dat de roze vlakken aan de zijkanten nog enigszins matchen 🙂

And the back. Looking at it like this I should probably have put in the effort to either put a pink square at the center or make sure that they’re further apart. But this was just a quick and dirty de-stress sewing project so I didn’t even think about it. I was happy that I at least matched the pink squares at te side seam – more or less 🙂

 

 

 

De tailleband sluit met een haak en oog en alle naden zijn afgewerkt met de lockmachine, De handgenaaide zoom is voorzien van een biaisbandje, een bijpassende zelfs. Van de verpakking van 3 meter was nog een 5 centimeter over. Normaal vind ik het gelijkmatig omhoog persen van de zoom nogal lastig. Soms stik ik er een hulpnaadje in met lange steken, maar met zo’n lange zoom heb ik daar niet altijd zin in (vooral niet in het er weer uithalen na de tijd). Vandaag had ik een ingeving: als understitchen daarvoor helpt bij het afwerken van halslijnen en armsgaten, waarom zou dat dan niet werken bij een zoom? En dat deed het, hoera!

The waistband closed with a hook and eye and the seams are finished with the overlocker. The hem is handfinished with matching bias tape. After sewing it on there was only 5 cm left of the 3 m that was in the package. I usually have a hard time to press up the hem equally. Sometimes I stitch a guideline with long stitches but I don’t like doing that with hems this long (or unpicking afterwards). Today I had a little epiphany: if understitching helps when finishing a neckline or armhole, why shouldn’t it when hemming? And it did, hurray!

 

 

Nog even terug naar onze arme kat: gelukkig mochten we hem ’s middags weer ophalen en gaat het redelijk goed met hem. Hij eet, drinkt, slaapt en haalt weer normaal adem. Maar hij is nog wel veel rustiger dan normaal. Ik ben er nog niet helemaal gerust op. Morgen moeten we terug naar de dierenarts, voor controle. We zullen zien wat ze zeggen. Hopelijk wordt ‘ie weer helemaal beter en kan ‘ie nog een poos bij ons blijven!

Back to our beloved cat: fortunately we could come and pick him up in the afernoon and he is doing ok for now. He eats, drinks, sleeps and breathes normal again. But he is still much quiter than usual. Tomorrow we’ll take him back to the vet for a check-up, and we’ll see how that goes. I’m hoping he’ll make a full recovery and that he’ll be around for many more years!
