Oddities, we all have them right? I know I have! Sewing oddities too.
Bijvoorbeeld met locken. Ik heb het allerliefst dat de bovenkant van de gelockte naad zichtbaar is, en niet de onderkant. Vind ik mooier.
Take overlocking. I want the upper part of the overlocked seam to be visible, and not the bottom part. Because I think it looks better.

Dit weekend bedacht ik me dat deze zelfopgelegde regel eigenaardigheid maar flauwekul was en ik het mezelf moeilijker maakte dan nodig. En dus probeerde ik tijdens het maken van een sweater om het los te laten. Dat voelde heel raar en daarom besloot ik mezelf gewoon m’n eigenaardigheid te gunnen. Waarom ook niet?
This weekend I told myself that this self-imposed rule sewing oddity was silly and I was only making this hard on myself. And so I tried to let it go while making a sweater. It felt really weird and I decided that it was just ok to have some oddities. Nothing wrong with that, right?

wat mij betreft niet 🙂 ik las echter eens dat je naden het beste vanuit een bepaalde richting kunt naaien, omdat ze dan het sterkste worden. Van beneden naar boven geloof ik, maar pin me er niet op vast. Dat kan dus niet tegelijk met de ‘goede’ kant naar boven locken. In mijn hoofd botst dat wel eens…
I have the same “oddity” about overlocker stitching. I just overlock everything from the right side of the fabric so it looks nice when seams are pressed open. It doesn’t worry me on knit seams though, for some reason!
yes, it looks way better! it bothers me on knits too, that’s what makes it annoying, for example when setting in sleeves.
I don’t know if it counts as an oddity, but I’m very particular about finding the straight grain of the fabric, before cutting out the pattern pieces. If I’m off by even 1/32″, I am not satisfied. It has to be 100% perfect.
I also try to cut my fabric so there’s only tiny scraps which I can throw away (instead of big useless chunks of fabric). Between finding the grain and lining up my pattern pieces juuust so, it can take me hours to cut. I am sure that if I relented a bit on either or both of these ‘oddities’, it would save me several hours a month.
I love that! I’m not that precise when it comes to grain but I admire you for it! I do keep the bigger scraps, sometimes for pocket or waistband facings but also to give them to my mother in law, she collects them for a friend who makes aprons from scraps.
