Soms voelt het bedenken van de eerste zin van een blogpost als die van een sollicitatiebrief.. hoe zal ik eens beginnen? Een gelukkig nieuwjaar allereerst! Dat het maar een mooi jaar mag worden, met veel creativiteit en warmte, waarin vertrouwen het wint van wantrouwen. *insert hier drie zoenen, wanneer gewenst*.

Sometimes writing the first sentence of a blog post feels a bit like writing the first sentence of a letter of application… how to start? Well in this case, with the best wishes for the new year! I wish you all a year filled with creativity and warmth, a year in which trust wins over distrust (mistrust? I’m not sure I used the right words here but I hope the sentiment comes across 🙂 ).

Dit jurkje maakte ik voor de kerst. Ik was sowieso van plan om nog eens een Southport jurk te maken met de korte rok, maar ik worstelde een beetje met de mouwloosheid van het patroon. Daar is natuurlijk maar één oplossing voor: mouwen toevoegen! De mouwen en armsgaten nam ik over van de ‘fit but you know it’ bloes, omdat die mij goed passen. Ze pasten niet helemaal goed aan het patroon, dus ik moest een beetje puzzelen. Het is niet helemaal perfect maar dit was slechts een eerste poging, het zit fijn en het drukke printje verdoezelt goed, dus er is geen man overboord.

This dress was made for Christmas. I was planning on making the short version of the Southport dress, but I struggled a bit with the sleevelessness of the pattern. Obviously, there is only one solution for that: add sleeves! The sleeve and armscye belong to the ‘fit  but you know it’ blouse pattern. They fit me quite well. They didn’t match the Southport pattern, so it was a bit of a puzzle. It isn’t a perfect fit there, bit it was just the first try, it’s confortable and the busy print is forgiving, so nothing to worry about.

Zie hier de reden dat dit patroon geweldig geschikt is voor de feestdagen: het striklint in de taille is deels van elastiek. Erg prettig voor de kerstdiners!

Zo ziet dat er uit. Het elastiek zit in de tunnel en dat zie je dus niet. Aan beide kanten zit het lintje van stof genaaid. Ik las deze tip op een ander blog, maar ik weet niet meer welke helaas.

This is how it looks inside of the casing. The middle part of the waist tie is elastic and both ends are self-fabric ties. I read this tip on anther blog but unfortunately don’t remember which one.

Om de mouwtjes goed te laten passen tekende ik een kleine centimeter extra aan de schoudernaad van het achterpand. Daardoor is het achterpand nu een beetje te lang en hangt de rok aan de achterkant een beetje naar binnen. Voor de rest is de pasvorm prima, maar dat wist ik natuurlijk al na twee exemplaren. De stof is een viscose van Driessen stoffen. Het is een stuggere stof dan dat ik gewend ben van viscose maar dat was wel zo prettig bij het verwerken. Het draagt ook heerlijk, lekker licht. Het voelt bijna alsof ik niks aan heb, haha.

To make the sleeve fit I added about a centimeter of length to the back shoulder. This threw off the fit of the back bodice a bit: it’s a bit long and therefore the skirt dips in a bit at the back hem. Apart from that the fit is great, but of course I knew that already after making two versions. The fabric is a viscose from Driessen stoffen. It’s much less drapey than other viscoses I’ve worked with but that made sewing this dress way easier. It’s still a very lightweight fabric which makes this dress very nice to wear. It almost feels like wearing nothing, haha.

Ik was bang dat de rok een beetje kort zou voelen, omdat ik meer knielengte gewend ben. Voor zo met een panty vind ik het echter prima. Ik denk dat een knielange rok, gecombineerd met de rest van het model, een beetje truttig of slonzig kan lijken. Of ik hem van de zomer ook zonder panty aan ga trekken durf ik echter nog niet te zeggen, misschien vind ik ‘m daar wel een beetje te kort voor.

I was worried the skirt would feel a bit short, as I’m used to wearing knee lenght dresses. When worn with tights as here I think it’s perfectly fine though. Perhaps a knee lenght skirt on a tie-waist dress like this would look a bit frumpy too. I’m not sure whether or not I will wear it sans tights in summer thoug, it might just be tad short for that.

Inmiddels heb ik ook dezelfde stof in het rood besteld, voor nog een exemplaar. Ik ben fan van de Southport!

Between making and blogging this dress I bought the red colourway of the fabric too, to make another Southport. I love this pattern!
