I like big collars and I cannot lie

Net als de afgelopen jaren is er ook dit jaar weer de Vintage pledge: naaien van je vintage patronen. Ik doe niet zozeer een jaarlijkse ‘pledge’ maar omdat vintage patronen kopen best duur is, heb ik wel met mezelf afgesproken dat ik diegenen die ik koop, ook maak. Zo ook Simplicity 3278, een ‘double breasted’ jurk met een grote kraag.

Just like in previous years, there is another Vintage pledge this year: sewing from your vintage patterns. I’m not doing a specific pledge but since buying vintage sewing patterns is expensive here in the Netherlands, I have made a deal with myself that if I buy a pattern, I have to sew it too. So here is Simplicity 3278, a double breasted dress with a big collar.

Big collars seem to be a recuring theme in my Vintage pledge projects because both the first and the second had one 🙂

Het is wel duidelijk dat ik wel het bovenlijfje maar niet het rokdeel van het patroon gebruikte. Ik heb het bovenlijfje aangepast en de rok was geplooid, waardoor ik bang was dat de rok niet meer op mijn bovenlijfje zou passen. Daarom deed ik één keer de stofbreedte met stolpplooien waar de figuurnaden eindigen.

I think you can see that I didn’t use the pattern’s skirt. It was a pleated skirt and because I made adjustments to the bodice, I was worried that the pattern’s skirt wouldn’t fit. So I used a full width of the fabric and made box pleats at the dart ends.

Ik zei dat ik wat aanpassingen deed aan het patroon maar eigenlijk kopieerde ik de kraag en de knoopsgatenbiezen op het patroon van de Camí-jurk. Die past mij goed en ik ben blij met de mouwen en armsgaten, dus dat leek me een goede oplossing. Op de één of andere reden is ‘ie echter een beetje aan de krappe kant geworden en had ik ook iets meer ruimte moeten maken bij de buste. Het past hoor, maar het is niet een jurk voor een uitgebreid diner 😉

Where I said that I made adjustments to the pattern, I meant that I copied the collar and the button band parts to the Camí pattern. It fits me well and I like how the sleeves and armholes fit. Somehow it ended up a bit on the smaller side and it would have benefitted from a bit more room at the bust as well. It fits, so don’t panic, but this is not a dress to wear to, let’s say, a restaurant 😉

Zie je, een beetje krap bij de buste. De stof is een katoenen poplin en komt van hier. Dat donker oranje is één van mijn favoriete kleuren. Ik heb ook donker oranje garen gebruikt voor het doorstikken maar dat zie je niet heel goed op de foto’s. De knopen komen van de 100 yen shop in Japan. Met twee van die zakjes kan ik heel lang vooruit!

As you can see, a little tight at the bust. The fabric is a cotton poplin and I bought it here. The burnt orange is one of my favorite colours. I also used burnt orange thread for topstitching but it doesn’t really show on the pictures. The buttons are from a 100 yen-shop in Japan. Two packages of those provide buttons for years!

Los van de krapte vind ik het een mooi geworden jurk, waar ik heel blij mee ben! De afgelopen tijd heb ik veel met tricot gemaakt, het één wat geslaagder dan het ander. Dat is best leuk om te doen, maar het allerleukste vind ik nog steeds katoenen jurkjes maken. Het vormen van de stof met figuurnaden, plooien en rimpels blijft heerlijk om te doen.

Tightness aside, I’m happy with how this dress turned out and I quite love it! Lately I’ve been sewing a lot with jersey fabric, and while that is fun too, making cotton dresses is my favourite thing. Using darts, pleats and gathers to give the fabric shape is so satisfying and fun.

Een close-up van het bovenlijfje. De knoopjes zijn een beetje klein en vallen wat weg in de print, voor een volgende keer zou ik grotere gebruiken (de mogelijkheid is aanwezig dat ik daar al stof voor heb gekocht). Toch passen ze er ook wel goed bij.

Ik denk dat ik wat ruimte toevoeg aan de buste bij dit patroon en het nog een keer maak. En dan met een geplooide rok. Heerlijk toch, die oneindige mix-en-match mogelijkheden. Wat is jouw favoriete soort project?

I think I’ll do a small FBA to the patter and make it again. Probably with a gathered skirt. Don’t you just love the neverending mix-and-match possibilities of projects like these? What’s your favourite kind of sewing project?

Butterick 6501 knockoff

Toen ik Butterick 6501 zag op Etsy was ik meteen verliefd. Maar helaas, het patroon was niet in mijn maat, verre van zelfs. Op zulke momenten ben ik heel blij dat ik kant patroontekenen, én dat bij vintage patronen de patroondelen op de achterkant staan afgebeeld. De twee jurken die ik voor de Vintage pledge maakte draag ik vaak en dus besloot ik om te proberen dit patroon na te maken.

When I saw Butterick 6501 on Etsy I immediately fell in love. Unfortunately the pattern was nowehere near my size. On moments like this I’m really happy I can do a bit of patterndrafting, and that vintage patterns show the shape of the pattern pieces on the back of the envelope. The two dresses I made for Vintagde pledge get worn a lot and so I decided to try to knock off this pattern.

En zo heb ik toch mijn Butterick 6501, al is het een knockoff versie, en zijn de details totaal onzichtbaar door de stof die ik gebruikte.

And so I now have a Butterick 6501 knockoff dress, with completely invisible details due to my fabric choice.

Eigenlijk is dit een proefversie. Ik maakte het patroon, een toile van het bovenlijfje, nog wat patroonaanpassingen en toen deze jurk. De stof die ik voor de ‘echte’ jurk wil gebruiken vind ik zó gaaf, dat ik echt nul risico wilde lopen op een jurk die niet mooi zit of staat.

This is actually a wearable muslin. I made the pattern, a toile of the bodice, some pattern adjustments, and then this dress. The fabric I have in mind for the ‘real’ dress is so nice that I didn’t want to risk a dress that doesn’t fit well or look good.

Voor het patroon gebruikte ik Butterick 6869 als basis, omdat dat patroon dezelfde soort kraag heeft. Ik maakte de kraag wat kleiner en roteerde de rimpels vanuit de schouder naar de figuurnaad. Toen maakte ik de pas in de taille, en veranderde ik de figuurnaad in een stolpplooi. Na de toile verlegde ik de schoudernaad nog iets naar voren en versmalde hem een beetje, en deed ik een broad upper back adjustment. Het patroon past nu prima, maar er ‘moeten’ nog twee kleine dingen aangepast worden voor een perfecte pasvorm: een beetje wijdte uit het bovenlijfje ter hoogte van de kraag verwijderen en er moet iets aan de mouwkop aangepast worden. Die hangt niet goed als ik mijn armen langs mijn lijf laat hangen, maar pas als ik mijn armen iets naar voren doe. Eigenlijk is dat best handig, want het grootste deel van de dag breng ik in die houding door (in de auto, achter het bureau), dus misschien laat ik het ook wel zo.

As starting point I used Butterick 6869, because it already had the wing collar. I made the collar smaller and rotated the shoulder gathers to the bust dart. Then I made the waist yoke and changed the bust dart into a box pleat. After making the toile I adjusted the pattern for a forward shoulder and a broad upper back. I also removed a bit of width from the shoulders. This resulted in a pretty well fitting garment, but it needs a few small adjustments before it’s perfect. I need to remove a small amount of width from the upper bodice where the collar folds over, and I should change the sleeve head. It doesn’t hang right with my arms down, but it does when I reach forward a bit. I’m not sure wheter or not to adjust for this, because I spend a lot of time with my arms in that position (in the car and at my desk). I might leave it like this.

De rok is een halve cirkel. Toch wel mijn favoriet. Waar ik even geen rekening mee had gehouden was dat bij dit patroon het voorpand iets breder is dan het achterpand. Daardoor sloten de rokdelen niet goed aan op het bovenlijfje. Ik loste het op door achter een paar kleine plooitjes te maken en de voorkant wat uit te rekken. Omdat de bovenkant van de rok min of meer schuin van draad is kon ik het genoeg uitrekken om het passend te krijgen. De taille is daardoor wel ietsje krapper dan anders maar hee, het past nog dus who cares.

The skirt is a half circle, my favourite shape. When making the dress I kind of forgot that the front of the bodice is slightly smaller than the back, so the skirt pieces didn’t fit the bodice pieces. I fixed this by making two small pleats at the skirt back and stretching the skirt front. The top of the skirt is more or less cut on the bias so fortunately it had enough give. The waist is a bit smaller than intended because of this but it still fits so who cares.

De stof, katoen, kocht ik in Japan toen we daar voor het eerst waren in 2013. Deep stash dus! Ik was er eerst helemaal weg van, maar later vond ik hem toch niet meer zo mooi. Nu ben ik blij dat ik het gebruikt heb voor deze jurk want ik ben heel blij met hoe ‘ie geworden is!

This fabric, cotton, was bought in Japan in 2013, on our first holiday there. Deep stash! At first I loved it, but then I fell a little out of love with it. Now I’m happy I used it for this dress because I love how it turned out!

Vintage pledge: Simplicity 2549

Hierbij de tweede jurk die ik voor de Vintage pledge maakte: Simplicity 2549. En ja, ook bij dit patroon was de kraag datgene waar ik voor viel.

Here is my second Vintage pledge dress: Simplicity 2549. And yes, it was again the collar that sold me on this pattern.

Om het patroon passend te krijgen tekende ik, net als bij Butterick 6869, de kraag op mijn basispatroon. Ook splitste ik de figuurnaad in de taille op in twee figuurnaden, net als het patroon heeft. Dat had voor het zicht niet gehoeven, je ziet het bijna niet in deze donkere stof. Maar ja, je maakt een patroon na of je doet het niet he? 🙂

To get the pattern to fit me I just drew the collar on my basic bodice, just like with Butterick 6869. I also split the waist dart into two darts. It doesn’t really show in this dark fabric but hey, you recreate a pattern or you don’t, right? 🙂

De rok die bij het patroon hoort bestaat uit duizend-en-één plooitjes. Ik was heel erg van plan om die te gebruiken, tot ik de patroondelen met al die plooitjes zag. Mijn prefrontale cortex ging vol in de ankers en ik besloot om een gerimpelde rok te maken in plaats van al die plooien. De rok bestaat uit twee volledige stofbreedtes van 1.40 m en is dus erg vol.

Pleated pattern pieces. Just no.

The skirt pattern has a thousand and one small pleats. I completely intended to use the pattern pieces but when I saw them my brain froze and I decided to go with a gathered skirt instead. It’s made of two widths of fabric so it’s very full.

De kraag en het kleine knoopsbiesje eronder zijn mijn favoriete onderdelen van deze jurk. De knopen had ik nog liggen, ik haalde ze van mijn New Look 6000 jurk voordat ik die weggooide. Ze passen perfect bij deze stof. Het duurde even voordat ik besloot welke stof ik wilde gebruiken voor dit patroon. Uiteindelijk bestelde ik deze omdat een maritieme touch me wel een goed idee leek bij deze grote kraag.

The collar and the little button placket are what I like the most about this dress. The buttons came from stash, I took them off of my New Look 6000 dress before I threw it away. They’re perfect for this fabric. It took a while to decide which fabric to use. Eventually I ordered this anchor fabric because I thought a nautical theme would suit the big collar.

De zij- en achterkant. Ik draag hier een petticoat onder de rok maar dat zie je bijna niet eens, zo vol is ‘ie.

Vintage pledge: Butterick 6869

Een tijdje terug kocht ik dit patroon op Etsy. Ik wilde al een poos een jurk met een ‘wing collar’ (geen idee wat de Nederlandse naam daarvoor is, vast geen vleugelkraag 😉 ) maken, maar wist niet precies hoe ik daar een patroon voor moest maken. En dus kocht ik er maar eentje.

A while ago I bought this pattern on Etsy. I wanted to make a dress with a wing collar for some time now but didn’t know how to draft one myself. So I bought a pattern that has one.

Vervolgens lag het een poos te wachten op actie. Eigenlijk alle jurken van gewoven stoffen die ik de afgelopen tijd heb gemaakt zijn op basis van mijn basispatroon. Gegarandeerd passend dus. Van deze jurk wist ik dat niet en moest ik een proefmodelletje maken. In mijn hoofd Heul Erg Moeilijk (in werkelijkheid niet, uiteraard). Ook wist ik niet zo goed welke stof ik wilde gebruiken. Het liefst één met een klein bloemetje op een donkere of rode achtergrond, maar vind dat maar eens. Ik moest er uiteindelijk helemaal voor naar Antwerpen (hè, wat vervelend). Daar bezocht ik samen met Hanne Julija’s en kocht er deze prachtige Liberty print. De duurste stof die ik ooit kocht, maar dat mag de pret niet drukken.

Then it laid around for a while waiting for action. Pretty much every dress I’ve made from a woven fabric recently was based on my basic bodice. So I knew the fit would be good. This pattern would need a muslin and probably some adjustments, in my mind Very Difficult (but in reality not, of course). Also, choosing a fabric was difficult. I wanted a small scale floral with a dark or a red background, but that was impossible to find. In the end it took a trip to Antwerp to find it. I visited Julia’s shop with Hanne and bought this lovely Liberty print. The most expensive fabric I even bought but who cares (beside my bank account).

Uiteraard moest ik wat aanpassingen doen aan het patroon. Het verschilde zó van mijn basispatroon, vooral in de lengte, dat ik de kraag daar maar op getekend heb. Vervolgens roteerde ik de figuurnaad aan de zijkant van het voorpand naar de schouder en veranderde hem in rimpels. De vorm van het armsgat behield ik voor het grootste deel. Het proefmodel paste vervolgens wel vrij oké, ik heb alleen het armsgat een centimeter verhoogd en 1,5 centimeter wijdte toegevoegd aan de mouw. Ook haalde ik nog ietsje lengte uit de rimpels bij de schouders. De rok heb ik opgemeten en die leek wel goed te passen, dus daar veranderde ik behalve flink inkorten niks aan.

Of course I had to make some changes to the pattern. It was so different from my basic bodice, expecially in length, that I decided to just put the collar on my bodice and transfer the bust dart to the shoulder seam and turn it into gathers. I kept the shape of the armscye for the biggest part. The muslin fitted quite okay, all I did was raise the armhole by a centimeter and do a 1,5 centimeter full bicep adjustment. I also took a bit of lenght out of the shoulder gathers. When I measured the skirt it seemed to be fine so I didn’t make any changes there, beside shortening it.

Dit is ‘m uiteindelijk geworden! De knoopjes had ik nog in mijn voorraad, ooit een keer gekocht op een rommelmarkt.

En dat op comfortabele wijze zonder dat het ook maar ergens krap voelt. Hoera! Hoera voor de hele jurk ook, hij zit heerlijk, en wat leuk is het om van een vintage patroon te naaien. Zulke leuke details, die de pasvorm beter maken: een figuurnaadje in de schoudernaad aan de achterkant (die ik wel overnam trouwens), drie figuurnaadjes in de mouw ter hoogte van de elleboog. De vorm van de rok vind ik ook mooi, die ga ik denk ik vaker gebruiken.

And very comfortably too, no tightness whatsoever. Yay! Double yay for the entire dress too, it’s so comfortable and so much fun to sew a vintage pattern. Such fun little details, for a lovely fit: a dart in the back shoulder seam (which I did transfer to my bodice), and three darts at the elbow. I also really like the shape of the skirt, which I’ll probably use again.

Een paar kleine dingetjes die ik een volgende keer anders zou doen: de rok wat langer laten, een inimini beetje meer ruimte bij de buste en een forward shoulder adjustment. Dat doet niks af aan hoe blij ik ben met deze jurk, maar hey, er moet altijd wat te verbeteren overblijven toch?

A few small changes I would make to this pattern for the next time: leave the skirt a bit longer, a slight FBA and a forward shoulder adjustment. This doesn’t affect my overall hapiness at all but hey, there’s Always room for improvement right?

Naast de duurste jurk die ik ooit voor mezelf gemaakt heb, is dit ook de eerste helft van mijn Vintage Pledge. Ik besloot om daar aan mee te doen als een stok achter de deur, zodat ik niet twee mooie (en dure!) patronen zou kopen en vervolgens in de la zou laten liggen. Dat heeft al voor de helft gewerkt dus 🙂

So, besides the most expensive dress I’ve ever made for myself, this is also half of my Vintage Pledge. I decided to join Marie and Kerry to motivate myself to actually sew those two wonderfull (and expensive!) patterns that I bought. So far it worked 🙂

Uiteraard moest ik ook even het plaatje op het patroon nadoen. Wat is het duurste dat jij ooit hebt gemaakt voor jezelf? En wat voor bedrag per meter geef jij nog met een gerust gevoel uit aan stoffen?

Obviously I had to imitate the pattern picture. What’s the most expensive thing you have ever made for yourself? And how much money are you willing to spend comfortably on a fabric?
