Momenteel ben ik bezig met een nieuwe Ceylon jurk. Ik wilde graag eens met een andere stof dan katoen werken, dus koos ik dit keer voor wooltouch, van polyester en viscose, in donkerrood. Met zwarte knopen en een satijnen paspelbandje meegestikt.

Right now I’m working on another Ceylon dress. I wanted to try something other than cotton this time, so I chose a dark red wooltouch fabric, made out of polyester and viscose, with black buttons and satin piping.

Het stikken van het paspelbandje ging niet van een leien dakje, mede omdat mijn stof niet bepaald blij werd van het strijkijzer. Zelfs een persdoekje hielp niet tegen glimmende plekken. Het was dus meten, spelden, naaien, nameten, lostornen, weer spelden, weer naaien. Om chagerijnig van te worden. Toen schoot me opeens iets te binnen wat het hele proces een heel stuk makkelijker maakte. Het leek me leuk om dit met jullie te delen. Dus bij deze: mijn eerste tutorial!

Sewing the piping was quite difficult. My fabric started to get shiny marks as soon as I even put the iron on, even a presscloth didn’t help. So measuring, pinning, sewing, remeasuring, seam ripping, sewing again it was. I even got a little grumpy. Then I figured out a way to make the whole process a lot easier, and I want to share it with you guys. So there you have it: my first tutorial!

Stap 1: meten
Step 1: measuring

Mijn paspelbandje is 0,5 cm. De naadtoeslag is 1,5 cm. Het stukje van het paspelbandje waar het koordje in zit wil je buiten de naad hebben, dus dat meet je niet mee.
My piping is 0,5 cm. The seam allowance is 1,5 cm. You’ll want the part of the piping that has the cord in it to be outside of the seam so you exclude that from the measuring.

Stap 2: een gidsnaad stikken

Een beetje onduidelijke foto helaas, maar ik heb dus gestikt op 1 cm van de rand van de stof, zodat ik precies weet waar het randje van de paspelband moet komen. De afstand waarop je stikt is je naadtoeslag – de breedte van het bandje.
Unfortunately the photo is a bit dark, but I’ve sewn a line on 1 cm from the edge of the fabric, so I know exactly where the edge of the piping needs to be. The distance from the edge is the seam allowance minus the width of the piping.

Stap 3: het paspelbandje aan de stof naaien

Omdat ik precies weet waar ‘ie moet komen heb ik het spelden maar overgeslagen. Gebruik voor deze stap je ritsvoetje en stik nét niet helemaal tegen het koordje aan. Ik zette de naald 3 mm naar links voor deze stap.
Because I know exactly where it needs to be sewn, I didn’t pin. Use your zipper foot for this step and sew almost as close as you can get to the cord. I moved my needle 3 mm to the left for this step.

Stap 4: naai de naad
Step 4: sew the seam

Wederom met het ritsvoetje. Stik dit keer zo dicht mogelijk tegen het koordje aan. Ik zette de naald nu 3,5 mm naar linkts en drukte met mijn linker wijsvinger het koordje zo dicht mogelijk tegen het voetje aan.
Again, use your zipper foot. This time, sew as close as you can get to the cord. I put my needle 3,5 mm to the left here and used my left index finger to push the cord against the zipper foot.

Stap 5: persen of doorstikken
Step 5: press or topstitch

Omdat mijn stof dus niet zo goed met het strijkijzer overweg kan, koos ik voor doorstikken. En dan is het klaar! Zie je hoe mooi gelijkmatig het paspelbandje zit?
Because my fabric can’t handle the iron I opted topstitching. And then you’re done! Do you see how nice and even the piping is?
