Hemlock t(hr)ee

In april schreef ik al eens over de mijn strijd met T-shirts naaien. Na de succesvolle Plantain wou ik ook nog wel eens een andere vorm t-shirt proberen. Enter Grainline’s Hemlock tee. Een lekker wijd, casual shirt.

In april I talked about my struggle with sewing T-shirts. After discovering that the Plantain shirt fits me well, I wanted to explore other tee shapes. Enter Grainline’s Hemlock tee. Slouchy and casual, just what I was looking for.

Dit is versie 1, in een fijne viscose tricot die ik op het Stoffenspektakel kocht. Ik heb ‘m in de taille een beetje ingenomen (ongeveer 6 cm aan elke kant) omdat ‘ie anders wel erg massief leek met die rechte lijnen en verticale streep in de print.

This is version 1, in a great viscose jersey that I bought at the big fabric market when it was in town. I took it in a bit at the waist, about 6 cm on both sides.

Knutselen met patronen vind ik misschien wel net zo leuk als het naaien zelf en de Hemlock is een prima blank canvas voor allerlei aanpassingen. Voor versie nummer twee veranderde ik de volgende dingen:

het voor- en achterpand in totaal 4 cm versmald over de hele lengte
taille- en heupvorm toevoegen in plaats van een rechte zijnaad
de halslijn verlaagd en ietsje verbreed
een high-low zoom in plaats van een rechte

Playing around with patterns is something I like almost as much as sewing itself and the Hemlock is a perfect blank canvas for that. For version 2 I made the following changes:

taking out a total of 4 cm of width on the entire length of the shirt
adding waist- and hip shaping on the side seam
lowering the neckline and also widening it a smidge
adding a high-low hem

(volgende keer even dat staartje van de lockmachine eruit halen 🙂 / note to self: please remove that serged tail before taking pictures next time 🙂 )

De veranderingen hadden goed uitgepakt vond ik zelf, tot ik dit zag:

Iets teveel zwangerschapslook naar mijn zin! En dus vouwde ik nog een 3 cm aan wijdte uit de onderkant van het voorpand, uitlopend tot niks aan de bovenkant. Ook versmalde ik de mouwen nog een beetje bij de pols.

Yeah that’s too much of a pregnant look for me! And so I folded out about 3 cm of width at the front hemline, tapering to nothing at the neckline. I also slimmed down the sleeves a bit.

En zo komen we aan bij versie 3.

Het is niet echt een Hemlock meer te noemen, maar het is nu voor mij het perfecte casual T-shirt patroon geworden. In mijn hoofd heb ik minstens 10 andere versies gemaakt, in uni kleuren of juist met andere streepjes, en met of zonder mouwen. Hoeveel T-shirts heeft een mens nodig denk je?

It’s not really a Hemlock anymore with all those changes, but for me it’s the perfect slouchy tee pattern. In my mind I have already made up like a dozen of them, in solid colours or more stripes, and with or without sleeves. How many tees is too many, you think?

Grainline Morris blazer

Blazers. Ik ben er gek op maar ik draag ze nooit. Bij anderen vind ik het zo mooi staan, maar zelf voel ik me er veel te gekleed in. Bovendien passen ze me nooit goed, ze zijn of te klein bij de buste of te groot bij de taille. Beetje jammer.

Blazers. I love them but never wear them. They look great on other people but make me feel overdressed. Also they never fit properly, they’re either too small at the bust or too big at the waist. Such a shame.

Daar komt dus het grootste voordeel van ‘zelf maken’ om de hoek kijken! Toen ik de Morris blazer van Grainline Studio zag was ik meteen enthousiast. De versie van Gillian trok me over de streep. Van het voorjaar maakte ik er al eentje, een donkerrode, maar die is nooit op de blog beland.

Enter the biggest benefit of sewing! When I saw Grainline Studio’s Morris blazer I immediately liked it. Gillians version was the push I needed to hit that ‘purchase’ button. I made one in spring, a burgundy red one, but it never got blogged.

De rode versie zit bij de schouders niet helemaal goed. Ze zijn te wijd en de schoudernaad zit wat te ver naar voren. Ik heb lang nagedacht over hoe ik dat het beste zou kunnen aanpassen en de oplossing bleek heel simpel: het achterpand 2,5 cm innemen aan de bovenkant van de middenachternaad.

The red one doesn’t fit too well in the shoulder area. The shoulders are too wide and the shoulder seam is too far forward. The solution to that turned out to be quite easy: taking in the CB seam at the top by 2,5 cm did the trick.

Wel een beetje suf dat daardoor het armsgat aan de achterkant een beetje vreemd valt maar hey, aan de achterkant dus who cares, toch?

Too bad that this alteration caused the armscye at the back to be a bit too high but hey, at the back side so who cares right?

Al met al is de pasvorm nog niet perfect, zoals je hierboven ook kunt zien. Bij de oksels wat strak, en de rest lijkt wel te wijd. Desondanks ben ik heel blij met dit jasje. Gemaakt van zwarte ‘wintertricot’ is het net wat netter dan een vest, maar toch casual genoeg om me niet opgelaten in te voelen. Bovendien zit ‘ie heerlijk. Geen knellende mouwen of zweterige voering, geweldig.

The fit is nowhere near perfect, as you can see in the picture above. It’s tight at the armpit, and the rest seems a bit big. Despite those things I couldn’t be happier with this blazer. It’s made out of ponte, dressier than a cardigan yet casual enough not to feel overdressed. On top of that it’s so comfortable. No too-tight-sleeves or sweaty lining fabric, I love it!

Ik ben blij dat ik nu eindelijk ook een blazer kan dragen waar ik me prettig in voel! Vertel eens, zijn er ook kledingstukken die je bij anderen altijd heel tof vind maar die je niet bij jezelf vindt passen?

I couldn’t be happier that I finally found a blazer I can wear and feel comfortable in. Tell me, is there a garment that you always love on others but just won’t wear because it doesn’t feel like ‘you’?

Moss-tard Mini

Nee, deze stond niet in mijn naai-plannen-post. Maar hij lag al wel uitgeknipt en wel in de la. Al een maand of twee. Oeps! En waarom? Ik wist niet zeker of de stof ging werken met het patroon. Het is een dikke canvas katoen, eentje die erg rafelt. En als ik iets niet weet, dan stel ik het uit, want dan denk ik dat het heel moeilijk en ingewikkeld wordt. Uit ervaring weet ik dat dat 9,9 van de 10 keer heel erg meevalt, maar dat uitstellen leer ik maar niet af Ben ik de enige die dit doet?

No, this one wasn’t in my to-sew-post. I had it cut out for about a month or two. Oops! Why? Because I wasn’t sure the fabric would work well. It’s a quite stiff cotton canvas, very prone to fraying. And if I’m not sure if something is going to work out, I put it off, because I think it will be all difficult and complicated. Which 99% of the time it isn’t. I’ve learnt that from experience, but I can’t seem to get rid of the postphoning Am I the only one doing this?

Maar toen ik las dat april tot Moss Making Month was benoemd trok ik de patroondelen toch maar uit de la. Een paar uurtjes achter de naaimachine (en lockmachine en strijkplank uiteraard) en het bleek weer eens dat ik me druk had gemaakt om niks.

But then I read that April was declared Moss Making Month and so I pulled the pattern pieces out of the drawer they were in. A couple of hours on the sewing machine (and overlocker and ironing board of course) and it turned out I had been fretting over absolutely nothing again.

Het vorige exemplaar moest ik middenachter wat innemen en dat had ik veranderd op het patroon. Dit keer was het dus lange halen, snel thuis 🙂 De naden heb ik doorgstikt met de driedubbele steek. Man, wat hou ik van die steek voor details! De binnenkant van de tailleband en de zakken maakte ik van een restje stof, en de rok sluit met een drukknoop. Heerlijk is dat, om die in de stof te hameren!

I had to take in the previous version at the center back seam. Since I had transfered that to the pattern, making this one was smooth sailing. I topstitched the seams with the triple stitch. Man, I love that stitch for topstitching! The inner waistband and pockets are made from a scrap, and the skirt closes with a snap. Hammering them in is such a joy!

Dus: #SewDollyClackett, Me Made May, Moss Making Month. Een hoop ‘gezamenlijke’ projecten. Ik vind het altijd heel leuk om daarover te lezen, maar zelf meedoen vind ik wel eens lastig. Ik hou nou eenmaal niet zoveel van deadlines en verplichtingen. Wat vind jij van sewalongs en andere ‘community projecten’?

So: #SewDollyClackett, Me Made May, Moss Making month. That’s a lot of ‘community projects’ for me. I usually love reading about them but since I’m not a big fan of deadlines and obligations, I struggle to take part in them. How do you feel about sewalongs and community projects?
