Sewcialists TNT month: Knipmode jan 17 dress 24

Het is deze maand TNT-maand bij de Sewcialists. TNT staat voor ‘Tried ’n true’, dus zeg maar een patroon dat je eerder gemaakt en eventueel aangepast hebt zodat het nu precies past zoals je wilt. Een patroon dat je zo uit de losse pols kunt maken dus, zonder onaangename pasvorm-verrassingen.

It’s TNT month at the Sewcialists. TNT means ‘tried ’n true’, a TNT pattern is basically a pattern that you’ve made before and adjusted where neccesary so that you can now make it again and again without nasty fit surprises.

Eén van de patronen die ik zo heb aangepast is jurk 24 uit het januarinummer van de Knipmode. Dat aanpassen was nogal een zware bevalling want de pasvorm was totaal niet goed voor mijn lijf. Maar ik vond de halslijn zo gaaf, en ik hou ook wel van de puzzel om het goed te krijgen. En uiteindelijk is het nu min of meer goed. Voor deze jurk verlengde ik de mouwen en de rok, en maakte de zijnaden van de rok een beetje gerend. Wat dat is natuurlijk ook één van de voordelen van een TNT patroon: door kleine details aan te passen krijg je een ander effect.

One of the patterns that became a TNT for me is dress 24 from the january issue of Knipmode. Adjusting this pattern was no picnick, the fit was totally wrong for my body. But I really liked the neckline, and I love a fitting puzzle, so I soldiered on. For this version I lengthened the sleeves to full length and the skirt to kneelength. I also slightly flared out the skirt. That’s another benefit of a TNT pattern: change a few details and your garments gets a different look.

De stof is een crepe jersey, denk ik. Ik weet niet zeker of het een echte jersey is of meer een scuba. Het is heel glad van binnen, en ik was een beetje bang dat dat niet heel lekker zou dragen, maar het zit juist heerlijk. Door de gladde binnenkant valt het ook mooi soepel.

Ik denk dat ik de rok tussen de taille en heupen nog een heel klein beetje inneem, daar zit wat te veel ruimte.

The fabric is a crepe jersey, I think. I’m not sure it’s a jersey or a scuba. It’s slippery on the wrong side and I wasn’t sure how nice that would be to wear, but it turns out it’s quite comfy. The slippery inside makes it drape really well, too.

I think I’ll take it in a bit between the waist and the hip as there’s a bit much room there.

De kraag is nog steeds mijn favoriete onderdeel van dit patroon. Het is een soort sjaalkraag die uitloopt in een figuurnaad die je niet dichtstikt. Klinkt dat een beetje logisch? Ik weet niet zo goed hoe ik het anders moet omschrijven.

The collar is still my favourite part of this pattern. It’s basically a shawl collar that connects to a shoulder dart that you don’t sew up. Does that make sense? I don’t know how to describe it differently.

Ik ben echt fan van middenachternaden, zoveel makkelijker om een goede pasvorm te krijgen aan de achterkant. Het lijkt alsof er nog een beetje teveel lengte in het achterpand zit maar dat komt denk ik door mijn houding op deze foto en doordat de stof een beetje gekreukeld is door het dragen. Oke, misschien ook door het in een hoopje op de grond naast het bed liggen 🙈

I’m a big fan of center back seams, they make fitting the back so much easier. It looks like there’s a little too much length in the back in this picture, but that’s not the case. I think it’s because of my posture here and because the fabric is a bit wrinkled through wearing. Ok, and maybe because it has been laying in a pile at the floor in my bedroom 🙈

Jungle… october?

Nog eentje in de categorie ‘patronen die ik al vaak maakte’: de Rachel wrap dress van Maria Denmark. Dit keer in een dikke wintertricot. Met panterprint. Dat is wel een beetje uit mijn comfortzone, stijltechnisch, maar hé, het schijnt dat daar the magic happens.

Another one from the category ‘patterns I have used many times before’: the Rachel wrap dress by Maria Denmark. This time in a cozy double knit. In panther print. It’s a bit out of my comfortzone, style-wise, but isn’t that where they say the magic happens?

De foto’s zijn een beetje blurry, want de autofocus van mijn camera wilde opeens niet meer meedoen.

Omdat deze stof niet in de lengte rekt heb ik een centimeter extra lengte toegevoegd aan het lijfje. Daardoor zit de overslag nu een beetje laag en is dit wel echt een jurkje geworden om een hemdje onder te dragen. Ik geloof dat ik ook een halve centimeter extra aanknipte bij de zijnaden en de mouwnaden, omdat de stof wat minder rekt dan dunnere tricots.

Because this fabric has no lenghtwise stretch, I added a centimetre of length to the bodice. That made the crossover point a bit low so this is definately a dress to wear a camisole under. If I remember correctly, I also cut an extra half centimetres to both the side seams and the sleeve seams, because this fabric has slightly less stretch than thinner jerseys.

Zei ik al dat het een ontzettend lekker zacht stofje is? En lekker warm voor in de winter, met de lange mouwen ook.

Did I say that this is a very soft and cozy fabric? And nice and warm for the winter, with the long sleeves.

In het achterpand maakte ik twee kleine figuurnaadjes omdat er daar een beetje teveel stof zat. Ik denk dat ik eigenlijk een centimeter of twee lengte weg zou moeten halen, maar ja dat gaat natuurlijk niet meer als je jurk al helemaal in elkaar zit.

The back has two small darts added, because there was a bit of fabric pooling. I think I need to do a swayback adjustment of about two centimetre, but that’s impossible to do as an afterthought.

De laatste tijd ben ik erg into donkeroranje/brique en die kleur komt in deze stof ook terug. Anders had ik ‘m denk ik niet gekocht. De beige ondergrond is namelijk niet een kleur waar ik heel wild van word. Of het echt ‘magic’ is, deze jurk, daar ben ik nog niet helemaal over uit. Hij zit in ieder geval wel heel lekker! Ik ben benieuwd of hij vaak uit de kast gaat komen straks als het kouder is.

Lately I’ve been drawn to dark/burnt orange and that’s the thing that drew me to this fabric. I don’t think I would have bought it otherwise. The beige underground is not a colour that I’m wild about. Wheter this dress is ‘magic’ or not remains to be seen. It’s very comfortable, that’s for sure! I’m curious if it will get a lot of wear when the colder weather arrives.

Burda september ’17, dress 116, take 2

In het vorige bericht vertelde ik al dat ik een tweede versie van het patroon had gemaakt. Dat is deze dus 🙂

As I said in the last post, I made another version of this pattern. Well, here it is 🙂

De stof is een stretch denim met een heel licht zilverkleurig printje. Ik heb de hals voor een beetje uitgediept, twee coupenaadjes in de hals van het achterpand gemaakt en verder de aanpassingen gedaan waar ik in de vorige post over vertelde: de coupenaden in het achterpand van de rok aangepast en de coupenaad in het bovenlijfje afgeknipt en afgelockt zodat de taillenaad niet zo lomp is. Resultaat: een perfecte jurk. Al zeg ik het zelf 😎

The fabric is a stretch denim with a subtle silvery print. I lowered the front neckline a bit, added two darts in the back neckline, and made the adjustments I wrote about in my last post: adjusting the darts in the skirt back and cutting off the outtake of the front darts to reduce bulk in the waist seam. Result: a perfect dress. If I may say so 😎

Het achter- en zij-aanzicht. Ik ben zó blij met deze jurk, alles eraan is 😍. Behalve misschien de armsgaten, die zitten een heel klein tikkeltje hoog, maar die kan ik nog makkelijk even uitdiepen.

The back and side view. I’m so happy with this dress, everything about it is just 😍. Except maybe the underarm seam, which is ever so slightly high. But that’s easy to adjust.

Sorry voor de dames zo pontificaal in beeld, maar hier zie je de zilveren print op de stof het beste.

Het figuurnaadje in de hals achter. Ik nam per kant twee centimeter weg.

The dart in the back neckline. I took out two centimetre from both sides.

De zelfkant van de stof als rand van het loopsplit, gewoon omdat het kan en ik hou van zulke kleine grapjes.

I used the selvedge in the vent, because I like funny little details like that.

Burda september ’17, dress 116

Na de goede ervaring die ik had met de jurk uit de Burda van augustus besloot ik om wat vaker dingen uit de Burda te proberen. In het septembernummer stonden een paar patronen die me wel aanspraken, en dit was er eentje van, jurk #116.

After the positive experience with the dress with all the darts from the august issue, I decided to try some more patterns from Burda magazines. The september issue had a few patterns that spoke to me, and this was one of them, dress #116.

Ik heb al een hele tijd een aantal stretch stoffen in mijn voorraad, maar ik vond er nooit echt een geschikt patroon voor. Dit leek me nou precies een patroon voor stretch stoffen. De gekruiste banden liet ik eraf, die vind ik niet zo mooi.

This seemed like a perfect pattern for those stretch woven fabrics I have in my stash but didn’t know which pattern to use with. I left off the ties, because I dont’t like them.

Als eerste gebruikte ik een lichte stretch denim. Ik kocht deze voor een skinny jeans maar bij nader inzien had ik geen idee wat ik daar op zou dragen. Dit is een maat 38 met twee FBA’s: een kleine full bust adjustment en een full butt adjustment. Ook verhoogde ik de oksel met 1.5 centimeter en versmalde ik de mouw wat. Tijdens het maken nam ik nog wat wijdte uit de bovenkant van het rugpand weg en verlengde ik de coupenaden van het achterpand van de rok wat.

First I used this light weight stretch denim. I bought it with the intention to make skinny jeans but I had no idea what I would pair those with, and so it became a dress. It’s a size 38 with two FBA’s: a smal full bust adjustment and a full butt adjustment. I also raised the armhole seam 1.5 centimetre and slimmed down the sleeve a bit. During construction I took out some width from the top of the back bodice and lengthened the back darts in the skirt.

De pasvorm is dikke prima. Ik ben vooral heel blij met hoe de mouwen en het armsgat zitten. De mouw is tweedelig en dat draagt fijn, je ziet gewoon een kleine kromming in de mouw als de jurk op een hangertje hangt. De coupenaden in de rok zijn nog niet helemaal je van het, maar dat heb ik bij een tweede versie van dit patroon verder aangepast en die zijn nu ook goed. De coupenaden bij de buste zijn best groot, en samen met de stof van de plooi in de rok geeft dat een vrij lompe taillenaad. Bij de volgende versie heb ik de coupenaad afgeknipt en gelockt en dat lijkt een stuk mooier.

The fit is pretty nice. I really like the sleeve/armhole fit. This is a two-piece sleeve, you can see the curve in the sleeve when the dress just hangs on a hanger. The darts in the skirt need a bit of work, but I’ve changed them in a second version of this dress and they are fine now too. The bust darts are quite big, and together with the fabric from the pleats in the skirt it makes for a bulky waist seam. In the second version of this dress I cut off the dart outtake and overlocked it, which looks much better.

Maar goed, voor een proefversie is dit toch een prima draagbaar exemplaar. Ik heb ‘m al een paar keer gedragen en er veel complimenten over gekregen. Door de stretch in de stof is het een een heel comfortabel jurkje. Met de aanpassingen die ik na deze versie deed heb ik nu een TNT (Tried and True) patroon voor stretch jurken, dus kan ik eindelijk ook aan dat deel van mijn stoffenvoorraad beginnen. Mooi op tijd voor de TNT-maand van de Sewcialists 🎉

But, all in all, this is a perfectly wearable muslin. I’ve worn it a couple of times already and received a lot of compliments on it. The stretch in the fabric makes it a very comfortable dress as well. So after adjusting the pattern I now finally have a TNT pattern for stretch wovens, which means I can finally sew up that part of the stash. Just in time for TNT-month of the Sewcialists 🎉
