Een paar weken terug waren we op vakantie. We gingen naar Napels, Rome en Londen. Toen we weer thuis waren moest mijn vriend weer werken, en was ik nog een weekje vrij. Heerlijk! In die week heb ik deze jurk gemaakt, van een wax print stof die ik in London kocht.

A few weeks ago we went on holidays. We visited Naples, Rome and London. Back home the boyfried had to work again and I had another week of holidays left. Yay! In that week I made this dress, with some wax print fabric I bought in London.

Ik vond de vorm van de Edith jurk die ik in een wax print maakte erg fijn, maar om nou twee Ediths van wax print te maken trok me niet zo. Geen idee waarom, want ik heb wel meer jurken-van-hetzelfde-patroon, maar soms heb je dat zo. En dus bedacht ik dat ik in plaats van de knoopsluiting het patroon gewoon met middenvoor op de stofvouw te knippen en de kraag te vervangen door een v-hals.

I quite liked the shape of my wax print Edith dress, but making two wax print Ediths felt a bit weird. No idea why, I have made multiple versions of the same pattern a lot but sometimes this happens. So I figured I could ditch the button closure and just cut the center front on the fold. I also swapped the collar for a v-neck.

Newsflash: dat werkt dus niet. Bij de buste zat het nog wel enigzins okee maar verder naar beneden was het een beetje jammer. Bij mijn buik en bovenbenen was het voorpand veel te groot. Het leek wel een zwangerschapsjurk.

Newsflash: that doesn’t work. At the bust, the fit was more or less ok, but further down it was awful. There was way too much width in the front at my belly and upper legs. It looked like a maternity dress.

I laugh in the face of fit issues 😉

Na een paar keer flink zuchten en wat vloeken probeerde ik de figuurnaden aan te passen. Dat lukte bij mijn buik wel, maar ik kreeg ze aan de onderkant maar niet goed. Het bleef er raar uitzien. Tot ik bedacht dat ik de figuurnaden wel uit kon laten lopen in plooitjes. Bingo! Dat was de oplossing. De pasvorm is bij lange na nog niet perfect, de figuurnaden zitten nog wat raar bij mijn buste, maar het is nu in ieder geval een draagbaar geheel geworden 🙂

After a few sighs and some cursing I tried to adjust the waist darts. It worked at the belly area but I couldn’t get the bottom end to look right. Untill I figured that it would probably look better if the darts would end in a pleat. Bingo! That was the solution. The fit is nowhere near perfect, the darts still look weird at the bust, but at least I ended up with a wearable dress 🙂

Die net-niet-matchende print op de rug geeft een mooi psychedelisch effect, haha. Zoals je ziet trekt de stof her en der nog een beetje, maar het ziet er echt 100 keer beter uit dan eerst, dus het stoort me niet echt.

The almost-matching print at the back gives a nice psychedelic effect, haha. As you can see the fabric still pulls here and there, but it’s a million times better than it was at first, so it doesn’t really bother me.

Met een vestje gaat het ook prima. Eindconclusie: het was even doorzetten maar nu wel blij met deze jurk. Al denk ik niet dat ik dit ‘patroon’ nog een keer zal gebruiken..

It works pretty well with a cardigan too. Conclusion: it was a bit of work but I’m actually quite happy with how it turned out. Although I probably won’t use this ‘pattern’ again..

Chinese/African/Dutch Edith dress

Drie jaar geleden maakte ik de Edith jurk van MariaDenmark voor het eerst. Dat was toen een proefmodelletje voor een blouse. De jurk was een succes, de blouse niet, haha. Sterker nog, de jurk heb ik nog steeds. En dat kwam goed van pas. Drie jaar geleden was ik wat minder kritisch op de pasvorm van dingen die ik maakte als nu. Ik vond toen dat de Edith mij goed paste. Maar inmiddels heb ik wat meer verstand van pasvormen en zag ik toch wel wat aandachtspuntjes. Het was heel handig dat ik de jurk van toen kon aantrekken zodat ik kon zien wat ik aan moest passen.

Three years ago I made MariaDenmarks Edith dress for the first time. Back then it was a wearable muslin for the blouse. The dress was a succes, the blouse wasn’t, haha. I still have that dress. When I made it I wasn’t as nitpicky on fit as I am now. I thought the dress fitted quite well then, but now I can see that some adjustments are in order. So it was quite easy that I could just put on my old dress to see what needed adjusting.

De belangrijkste verandering is vrij makkelijk te zien: ik fabriceerde er mouwen aan. Het patroon heeft kapmouwtjes maar nadat ik tig jurken met kapmouwtjes maakte ben ik daar wel een beetje op uitgekeken. Ik gebruikte het armsgat en de mouw van Butterick 6869. In eerste instantie de lange mouw, maar dat was een beetje print overkill. Dus veranderde ik ze in korte mouwen.

The biggest change is quite obvious: I put sleeves on it. The pattern has a kimono sleeve but since I’ve made so many sleeves with cut-on cap sleeves I’m a bit done with them. I used the armhole and sleeve from Butterick 6869. The long ones at first but that was a bit too much with this print, and so I changed them to short sleeves.

Verdere aanpassingen waren een 3 centimeter sway back adjustment en ik nam de zijnaad tussen de buste en de oksel wat in, van niks ter hoogte van de buste tot ongeveer 1,5 centimeter bij de oksel. Ook verlaagde ik het bustepunt met 1,5 centimeter.

Other adjustmenst were a 3 centimeter sway back adjustment and taking in the side seam at the top, tapering from nothing at the bust to 1,5 centimetre at the armpit. I also lowered the bust apex by 1,5 centimetre.

Het resulteerde in een prima passende jurk die alleen nog een héél klein beetje extra ruimte nodig heeft bij de buste. Hoera!

That resulted in a nicely fitting dress that only needs a teeny bit more room at the bust. Yay!

De stof is een wax print van Vlisco die ik via AliExpress kocht. Een Nederlandse stof met een Afrikaanse print die ik in China bestelde. Een wereldse jurk dus, ook al voelt het als ik heel eerlijk ben wel een beetje raar.

De prints op wax print stoffen hebben vaak een betekenis. De naam van deze print is Sika Wo Antaban, geld heeft vleugels. Vrij vertaald: als je niet goed voor je geld zorgt dan vliegt het bij je vandaan. Ik denk dat ik niet zo goed voor mijn geld zorg dan, want het vliegt meestal mijn portemonnee uit 😉

The prints on these wax print fabrics often have names and meanings. This particular print is called Sika Wo Antaban, money has wings. Apparently it means that your money will fly away from you if you don’t treat it well. Well, I guess I don’t treat my money right because it’s always gone so soon 😉

De knoopjes vond ik in de Jan Sikkes hier in Leeuwarden. Ze passen supergoed bij de stof, al zeg ik het zelf. Ik kocht er eerst 8, maar toen bleef er wel een heel groot stuk rok over onder de onderste knoop, dus ik moest de volgende dag terug voor één knullig knoopje 🙂

The buttons are from my local fabric shop. They match the fabric so well! I bought 8, but that left me with a lot of skirt below the lowest button. And so I had to go back to the shop the next day for one lousy button 🙂

Geld heeft vleugels dus. Ik koop de laatste tijd wel vaker dingen via AliExpress. Het is hardstikke goedkoop en ik vind het heerlijk om te grasduinen op die site op een luie avond. Maar hoe ethisch verantwoord is dat eigenlijk? Goedkoop spul kopen dat ik hier ook zou kunnen kopen, alleen dan voor minder geld. Het voelt steeds minder prettig moet ik zeggen. Wat vind jij?

So, money has wings. Lately I bough a bunch of stuff on AliExpress. It’s cheap and I love browsing around the site on a lazy evening. But is it reallty ethical, buying things cheap from the other side of the world, when I can also get them more locally, only more expensive? I’m not feeling really good about that to be honest. What do you think?

Soms heb je ineens zo’n vlaag van inspiratie en weet je opeens precies wat je wilt gaan maken, en van welke stof. Dat had ik al eerder een keer bij mijn maxirok, en ook na het maken van de flamingo jurk bij deze jurk. Opeens zat het idee in mijn hoofd en het liet me niet meer los. En dus ging ik maar aan de slag, want wat moet je anders?

Do you know how you sometimes get a whiff of inpsiration and you suddenly know exactly what to make and with which fabric? This happened with my maxi skirt and after finishing the flamingo dress it happened with this dress too. The idea was stuck in my head and wouldn’t go away. So I went for it, what else was there to do?

Het is weer een versie van mijn basispatroon. De inspiratie voor de halslijn kwam van een afbeelding op de achterkant van “Gerties new book for better sewing“. De kapmouwtjes zijn iets wijder gemaakt, het leek me leuk als de vloeiende vorm van de halslijn daarin terug zou komen. De rok komt van de Mortmain jurk van Gather (vandaar ook de naam van deze post). Dat patroon gebruikte ik al eerder voor een wax print stof en door de stijfheid van de stof komen de plooien mooi uit. Om toch een beetje variatie aan te brengen naaide ik de plooien dit keer andersom. En, omdat ik even geen rekening had gehouden met de tailleband in de Mortmain, is de rok een stukje korter dan de andere.

This is another adaptation of my basic bodice pattern. The inspiration for the neckline came from a picture on the back of “Gerties new book for better sewing“. The cap sleeves are a bit more exagerated because I thought it would be nice for them to have the same flowing line as the neckline. The skirt pattern is from Gather’s Mortmain dress (hence the name of this post). I used that pattern for another dress from wax print fabric and knew that the stiffness of the fabric would hold the pleats very well. This time I reversed the pleats, for a bit of variation. And, because I forgot to take into consideration that the Mortmain has a waistband, the skirt is a bit shorter.

Aan de achterkant zette ik er een ‘exposed’ rits in, gewoon omdat het kan 🙂 Wel een goed idee om die de volgende keer even helemaal dicht te doen als ik foto’s maak…

De stof komt van een markt in Amsterdam, er was daar een stoffenkraam die allemaal wax prints verkocht voor 5 euro per meter. Ik snap achteraf niet zo goed waarom ik maar twee stoffen heb gekocht daar. Misschien omdat ik er nog de hele dag mee in een plastic tas moest sjouwen? Anyway, ik was meteen verliefd op de kleuren. Voor het bovenlijfje heb ik wel een beetje gelet op de plaatsing van de print. Ik kon me nog een bepaald tv-momentje herinneren…

The fabric was bought at a market in Amsterdam, there was this place that sold all kinds of wax prints for 5 euros a meter. Looking back I cannot believe I bought only two fabrics. Maybe because I had to carry them around with me all day? Anyway, I fell in love with those colours immediately. The print did cause me to be a bit carefull with the pattern placement, because there was a certain tv-moment I remembered…

Zoals je ziet heeft de zoom een biaisbandje gekregen. Verder zijn alle naden met de lockmachine afgewerkt. ~~Ik was te lui om de draden te wisselen~~ wit leek me wel een geschikte kleur, er zit immers ook wit in de stof. Het beleg is een alles-in-één-beleg. Ik vind het zo tof dat het er dan zo netjes uit komt te zien.

As you can see the hem was made with some biastape. The seams have been finished witht the overlocker. ~~I was too lazy to change the threads~~ I thought white was an appropriate colour since there is some white in the fabric, too. The neckline and shoulders are finished with an all-in-one facing. I love how neat this looks.
