Dames en heren beste mensen, we zijn hier vandaag om over deze jurk te praten. Het is een heel gaaf patroon, met allemaal figuurnaden, en voelt wat zakelijker dan mijn gebruikelijke jurken 🙂

Hello everyone, we are here today to talk about this dress. It’s a pretty cool pattern, with a lot of darts, and it feels more businesslike than my usual dresses 🙂

Oke, nu even zonder grapjes. Dit patroon staat in de Burda van augustus, het is nummer 111. Ik was meteen verliefd. Misschien ook omdat ik The Good Wife weer aan het kijken ben, en dat daardoor mijn gave-zakelijke-outfit radar wat scherper afgesteld staat dan anders. De garderobes van Alicia, Diane en Kalinda zorgen er bijna voor dat ik mijn baan verruil voor een kantoorbaan-met-dresscode. Bijna.

Ok, seriously now. This pattern is from the august Burda magazine and it’s dress number 111. I fell for it immediately. Maybe it’s because I’m rewatching The Good Wife, which turned my pretty-cool-businesslike-outfit radar on. Alica, Diane and Kalinda’s awesome wardrobes almost makes me want to change my job for one in an office-with-dresscode. Almost.

Op deze foto’s zie je de figuurnaden het beste. De middenvoornaad liet ik weg door de patroondelen gewoon aan de stofvouw te knippen. De stof had ik nog liggen, het is een punto di roma en komt van hier. Ik had steeds in m’n hoofd om hem te combineren met een andere kleur, maar kwam er maar niet uit hoe dat te doen. Uiteindelijk bleek mijn anderhalve meter precies genoeg voor deze jurk, mits ik het kraagje recht van draad knipte in plaats van schuin.

These pictures show the darts. I left out the center front seam by cutting the pattern pieces on the fold. The fabric is from my stash, it’s a ponte knit and I got it here. I intended to use it for colourblocking but didn’t come up with a pattern and a matching fabric yet. The 1.5 metre I had turned out to be just the right amount for this dress. I just had to cut the collar on grain instead of on the bias.

Dit is maat 38 met wat aanpassingen aan het rokdeel. Ik deed een aanpassing voor dikke billen 🙂 en een aanpassing voor mijn wat uitstekende bovenbenen op het voorpand. Dat blijkt beter te werken dan het rokdeel over te laten lopen in een maat groter. Ik vermoed wel dat ik wat te enthousiast ben geweest in het aanpassen van het achterpand want het zit wat ruim, maar eerlijk gezegd zit de hele jurk een tikkeltje ruim. Ik heb inmiddels een tweede versie uitgeknipt en bij die heb ik bij de middenachter en zijnaden geen naadtoeslag aangeknipt. Ik vermoed dat als ik hem met de lockmachine naai, het dan precies goed gaat zijn.

This is a size 38 with some adjustments to the skirt part. I did a full butt adjustment, and an adjustment for my potruding front thights. It turns out that works better for me than just grading to a larger size at the skirt. I think I was a bit overenthousiastic with the full butt adjustment, as the back is a bot roomy. But to be honest the entire dress is a bit roomy. So when I cut out the second one I cut the center back and side seams without seam allowance. I hope that when I sew it up with the overlocker it will be just right.

De mouwen waren erg ruim, die heb ik aan de onderkant met drie centimeter ingenomen, uitlopend tot niks in de oksel. De oksel zit trouwens wat laag voor mij, die heb ik voor de volgende versie met anderhalve centimeter verhoogd. Ik heb ook twee centimeter lengte uit de bovenarm gehaald, omdat de figuurnaden te laag zaten.

The sleeves were quite wide, I took them in by 3 centimetre at the hem tapering to nothing at the armpit. The armhole is too low for me and I raised it by 1,5 cm for the next version. I also took out 2 cm of length on the upper arm, because the elbow darts were too low.

Als laatste nog even over de lengte. De rok is L A N G! Bij het overtekenen van het patroon haalde ik er al 7.5 cm aan lengte vanaf en uiteindelijk heb ik een zoom van 10 centimeter gemaakt. Ik weet dat ik niet één van de langsten ben, maar dit zou een knielang jurkje moeten zijn…

Finally, a word about the length of the skirt. It is L O N G! After tracing I removed 7,5 cm of length and in the end I hemmed it at 10 cm. I know I’m not that long but this is supposed to be a knee lenght skirt…

Maar… al met al ben ik helemaal niet ontevreden met deze eerste versie. De modellen die ik uit de Knip maakte zaten een stuk minder goed. Ik denk dat ik de rok nog een klein beetje inneem en dan is ‘ie prima draagbaar, toch?

But… all in all I’m not unhappy with this first version. The patterns I used from Knipmode had a way worse fit (on me). I think I’ll take in the skirt slightly and then just call it a wearable muslin, because it totally is wearable right?

La Maison Victor Solange

Geen idee wat me zo aantrok in het patroon, maar ik heb er speciaal de La Maison Victor voor gekocht. Het zag er gewoon uit als een onwijs relaxt zittend jurkje. Ik heb mezelf er nog van proberen te weerhouden door mezelf te overtuigen dat ik dit patroon toch echt ook wel zelf kon tekenen, maar uiteindelijk ben ik toch gezwicht, haha.

I don’t know what attracted me to this pattern, so much that I bought this issue of La Maison Victor just for it. It just looked like an incredibly comfy dress. I tried to tell myself that this was a dress that I could easily draft myself but it didn’t work and in the end I bought the magazine anyway, haha.

Het blijkt er niet alleen uit te zien als een onwijs relaxt zittend jurkje, dat is het ook! Ik maakte het zonder de zakken en zonder het ritsje op het achterpand, maar met een omvouwelastiekje aan de hals. Dat ik iets te strak aantrok tijdens het naaien waardoor het een beetje trekt maar soit. Dit is een maat 38, behalve in de taille, daar is het een 36. Ik moest het nog wel een beetje innemen en wat frutten met de vorm van de zijnaden want de taille zat wat te laag, waardoor het een wat zakkerig geheel werd. Gelukkig was dat makkelijk op te lossen 🙂

Turns out it doesn’t just look like an incredibly comfy dress, it is an incredibly comfy dress. I left off the pockets and the zipper, and finished the neckine with some fold over elastic. Which I pulled too much when sewing on so it pulls a bit. Oh well. This is a size 38 with a 36 waist, but I had to take it in and mess with the shape of the side seams a bit. The waist was a bit low which made it look baggy. Fortunately it turned out pretty easy to fix 🙂

Het patroon heeft een middenachternaad en dat vind ik altijd wel fijn. In de overgang van mijn rug naar mijn billen zit een flinke curve dus dan komt een middenachternaad goed van pas.

The pattern has a center back seam which I like. There’s quite a cruve where my lower back turns into my bum so a center back seam allows for easier fitting.

Omdat ik bang was dat het jurkje wat aan de korte kant zou zijn verlengde ik het patroon met een centimeter of tien. Uiteindelijk haalde ik er een paar centimeter af en zit er ook nog best een diepe zoom in. De lengte zal dus ongeveer hetzelfde zijn als hoe het patroon eerst was 🙂

Because I thought this dress was going to be a bit short I lengthened the pattern with 10 cm. In the end I took off a few cm and sewed a pretty deep hem so this is probably about the same length as the pattern was 🙂

De stof is dezelfde als één van mijn Apollon sweaters, alleen dan in het grijs in plaats van lichtblauw. Het is een heerlijk stofje. Het is ook echt een heerlijk jurkje! Wel wat korter en met een wat wijdere pasvorm dan ik gewend ben, maar soms is het ook goed om eens wat nieuws te proberen toch?

The fabric is the same as one of my Apollon sweaters, but in grey. It’s a very comfy fabric. In fact, this is a very comfy dress! It’s shorter and wider than I’m used to, but it’s good to try something new every once in a while isn’t it?

In september ga ik samen met Antje beginnen aan een serieuze naaiopleiding. En omdat een goede voorbereiding het halve werk is hebben we de boeken al in huis 🙂 Het gaat om het Danckaerts patroontekenboek. Om het uit te proberen tekende ik al het basispatroon maar daar moet ik nog wat aan futselen voor het helemaal goed zit. Om nog wat meer uit te proberen besloot ik de sjaalkraag te tekenen. Ik wilde al een poosje een jurk met een sjaalkraag maken en dit leek me het ideale moment.

In september, Antje and I are going to do some serious sewing education. And because a good start is half the work, we’ve already ordered the books 🙂 The method is called Danckaerts. To test the waters I drafted their basic bodice pattern, but it needs a bit more work. To try a bit more I decided to draft a shawl collar. I’ve been wanting to make a dress with a shawl collar for a while so this seemed like a good time.

Als uitgangspunt nam ik mijn favoriete bovenlijfje-patroon met aangeknipte kapmouwtjes. Net als bij de vorige jurk is de stof eigenlijk veels te druk om de details goed te laten zien. Ik bespeur een patroon hier… De stof, een katoentje, komt uit de uitverkoop-afdeling van de Jan Sikkes hier in Leeuwarden, voor 2,50 per meter kon ik ‘m niet laten liggen.

As starting point I took my favourite 4-dart bodice with cut on cap-sleeves. Just like my last dress, the print is too loud to really show the collar. I’m noticing a pattern here… The fabric, a pretty nice cotton, is from the clearance section of my local fabric shop. At 2,50 eur a metre, I couldn’t pass it by.

De rok is een kwart cirkel met twee plooien in het voorpand. Ik heb heel veel jurken met halve cirkelrokken en alhoewel ik de vorm daarvan erg mooi vind, waaien ze nogal eens omhoog als het waait. En het waait hier nogal vaak. Vandaar dat ik eens met een kwart wilde experimenteren, om te kijken hoe dat bevalt.

The skirt is a quarter circle one, with two pleats in the front part. I have a lot of dresses with half circle skirts and while I like the shape of them, they are not very practical when it’s windy. And the Netherlands is a notoriosly windy country. So I wanted to experiment with a quarter circle, to see how that goes.

Tot nu toe vind ik het experiment met zowel de kraag als de rok wel geslaagd. Ik heb nog eventjes getwijfeld of ik de kraag met een smal zwart biaisbandje zou afwerken, zodat de kraag wat meer af zou steken ten opzichte van de rest, maar uiteindelijk besloot ik dat niet te doen. Het lijkt me echter wel de ideale kraag voor een paspelbandje!

So far I think both the experiments with the skirt and the collar are a succes. I did contemplate finishing the collar with some thin black bias binding to make it stand out a bit more, but in the end decided not to. However, I do think a collar like this is perfect for piping!

De armsgaten zijn wel afgewerkt met zwarte biais, aan de binnenkant. De rits zit in de zijnaad en is aan de ene kant met de machine genaaid, en aan de andere kant met de hand vastgezet. Je ziet hem in de foto hierboven net een beetje piepen. Omdat ik geen geschikte knoopjes kon vinden heb ik parelmoeren drukknoopjes gebruikt. Die had ik nog in huis.

The armholes are faced with black bias. There’s a zip in the side seam and it’s half machine stitched, and half hand stitched. You can just see it peeking out in the picture above. Because I didn’t have any buttons that looked good, I decided to use pearl snaps from my stash.

Meer heb ik eigenlijk niet te zeggen over deze jurk 🙂 ik hoop dat het snel en veel mooi weer wordt zodat ik hem vaak kan dragen, en kijk nu al uit naar september als de opleiding gaat beginnen!

There’s not much more to say about this dress really 🙂 I hope there will be nice, warm weather soon so I can wear this, and I’m already looking forward to september and the start of the courses!

I like big collars and I cannot lie

Net als de afgelopen jaren is er ook dit jaar weer de Vintage pledge: naaien van je vintage patronen. Ik doe niet zozeer een jaarlijkse ‘pledge’ maar omdat vintage patronen kopen best duur is, heb ik wel met mezelf afgesproken dat ik diegenen die ik koop, ook maak. Zo ook Simplicity 3278, een ‘double breasted’ jurk met een grote kraag.

Just like in previous years, there is another Vintage pledge this year: sewing from your vintage patterns. I’m not doing a specific pledge but since buying vintage sewing patterns is expensive here in the Netherlands, I have made a deal with myself that if I buy a pattern, I have to sew it too. So here is Simplicity 3278, a double breasted dress with a big collar.

Het is wel duidelijk dat ik wel het bovenlijfje maar niet het rokdeel van het patroon gebruikte. Ik heb het bovenlijfje aangepast en de rok was geplooid, waardoor ik bang was dat de rok niet meer op mijn bovenlijfje zou passen. Daarom deed ik één keer de stofbreedte met stolpplooien waar de figuurnaden eindigen.

I think you can see that I didn’t use the pattern’s skirt. It was a pleated skirt and because I made adjustments to the bodice, I was worried that the pattern’s skirt wouldn’t fit. So I used a full width of the fabric and made box pleats at the dart ends.

Ik zei dat ik wat aanpassingen deed aan het patroon maar eigenlijk kopieerde ik de kraag en de knoopsgatenbiezen op het patroon van de Camí-jurk. Die past mij goed en ik ben blij met de mouwen en armsgaten, dus dat leek me een goede oplossing. Op de één of andere reden is ‘ie echter een beetje aan de krappe kant geworden en had ik ook iets meer ruimte moeten maken bij de buste. Het past hoor, maar het is niet een jurk voor een uitgebreid diner 😉

Where I said that I made adjustments to the pattern, I meant that I copied the collar and the button band parts to the Camí pattern. It fits me well and I like how the sleeves and armholes fit. Somehow it ended up a bit on the smaller side and it would have benefitted from a bit more room at the bust as well. It fits, so don’t panic, but this is not a dress to wear to, let’s say, a restaurant 😉

Zie je, een beetje krap bij de buste. De stof is een katoenen poplin en komt van hier. Dat donker oranje is één van mijn favoriete kleuren. Ik heb ook donker oranje garen gebruikt voor het doorstikken maar dat zie je niet heel goed op de foto’s. De knopen komen van de 100 yen shop in Japan. Met twee van die zakjes kan ik heel lang vooruit!

As you can see, a little tight at the bust. The fabric is a cotton poplin and I bought it here. The burnt orange is one of my favorite colours. I also used burnt orange thread for topstitching but it doesn’t really show on the pictures. The buttons are from a 100 yen-shop in Japan. Two packages of those provide buttons for years!

Los van de krapte vind ik het een mooi geworden jurk, waar ik heel blij mee ben! De afgelopen tijd heb ik veel met tricot gemaakt, het één wat geslaagder dan het ander. Dat is best leuk om te doen, maar het allerleukste vind ik nog steeds katoenen jurkjes maken. Het vormen van de stof met figuurnaden, plooien en rimpels blijft heerlijk om te doen.

Tightness aside, I’m happy with how this dress turned out and I quite love it! Lately I’ve been sewing a lot with jersey fabric, and while that is fun too, making cotton dresses is my favourite thing. Using darts, pleats and gathers to give the fabric shape is so satisfying and fun.

Een close-up van het bovenlijfje. De knoopjes zijn een beetje klein en vallen wat weg in de print, voor een volgende keer zou ik grotere gebruiken (de mogelijkheid is aanwezig dat ik daar al stof voor heb gekocht). Toch passen ze er ook wel goed bij.

Ik denk dat ik wat ruimte toevoeg aan de buste bij dit patroon en het nog een keer maak. En dan met een geplooide rok. Heerlijk toch, die oneindige mix-en-match mogelijkheden. Wat is jouw favoriete soort project?

I think I’ll do a small FBA to the patter and make it again. Probably with a gathered skirt. Don’t you just love the neverending mix-and-match possibilities of projects like these? What’s your favourite kind of sewing project?

The case of doubt

Tsja, de titel zegt het al een beetje, ik twijfel over deze jurk. Ik wil hem héél graag leuk vinden, want ik vind hem wel mooi, maar de pasvorm is gewoon niet je van het en daardoor voelt ‘ie niet helemaal goed.

Well, as the title of this post suggests, I’m not sure I really like this dress. I really want to like it, because I think it turned out pretty, but the fit is just that bit off and it doesn’t feel good when I wear it.

De combinatie van stoffen heb ik schaamteloos gekopieerd van iemand op Facebook. Beide stoffen zijn punto di roma’s van Driessen stoffen. Het witte elastieken paspel komt van de Jan Sikkes in Leeuwarden. Het patroon is jurk 6 uit de Knipmode van februari. Dit is maat 38. Ik haalde en centimeter lengte uit het bovenlijf tussen oksel en buste en verlaagde de halslijn naar die van maat 54. In eerste instantie verhoogde ik de armsgaten met een centimeter maar dat haalde ik er later weer af. Als laatste nam ik de taille wat in, zodat die mooi aansluit.

The combination of fabrics is a shameless copy of someone on Facebook. Both fabrics are ponte knits from Driessen fabrics. The white elastic piping is from my local fabric shop. The pattern is dress 6 from the february Knipmode issue. It’s a size 38, and I removed a centimetre of length between armhole and bust. I also lowered the neckline to that of the size 54. At first I raised the armholes by a centimetre too, but later removed that. Finally I took it in a bit at the waist.

The sleeves have a dart at the top, which is a nice feature.

Het zijaanzicht is één van de dingen die ik niet zo tof vind aan deze jurk. Ik weet niet of het door de patroondelen komt of door het paspelelastiek, maar het ziet er een beetje raar uit vind ik. Het teveel aan lengte op de rug werkt ook niet echt mee. Bovendien denk ik dat de halslijn aan de achterkant iets lager had moeten zijn, want de jurk trekt wat naar achteren.

The side view is one of the thinks I’m not too fond of. I don’t know if it’s the pattern lines or the elastic piping but it looks a bit weird. The excess length on the back doesn’t help either and I think the back neckline is slightly too high because the dress pulls backwards a bit.

De mensen van de Knip zeiden dat het model afkleedt als je de buitenste stof van een donkerdere kleur maakt… misschien moeten ze dan het middelste patroondeel bij de heupen ook wat minder breed maken 🙂

The people at Knipmode said that this dress makes you look slimmer if you use a darker fabric for the outer pieces… Perhaps they could have made the centre piece a bit smaller at the hips then 🙂

Ook bij deze jurk zitten de armsgaten weer wat raar, net als bij de groene die ik maakte. Door de twee verschillende kleuren valt het ook nog eens extra op, of zit dat misschien alleen in mijn hoofd?

This dress also has the armhole-issue that my green dress had. The two different fabrics make it even more noticeable. Or maybe that’s just my inner perfectionist acting up and it’s not that bad?

Het laatste wat ik te zeuren heb is dat ik de rok teveel taps vind toelopen. Iets rechter zou beter staan denk ik.

My final complaint is that the skirt tapers in a bit too much for my taste. I think it would look better if it were just a bit more straight.

Is er dan niks waar ik tevreden over ben? Ja zeker wel, de kleuren en de zoom:

Don’t I have anything positive to say about this dress? Yes I have, I like the colours and the hem:

Maar goed, even zonder geintjes. Ik hoor graag jouw objectieve mening over deze jurk. Ik heb nogal eens last van perfectionisme en eerlijk gezegd heb ik in geen jaren zo’n nauwsluitende jurk gedragen. Een strak bovenlijfje wel, maar niet een complete jurk. Het kan dus ook zomaar zijn dat ik er gewoon even aan moet wennen. En daarom: meningen graag! U wordt bij voorbaat hartelijk bedankt 🙂

But all joking aside: I would really like to hear your opinion about this dress. I have these perfectionist tendencies and to be honest it has been years since I wore a fitted dress like this. A fitted bodice is familiar territory, but not a complete dress. It may as well be that I’m just not used to it. So, honest opinions please! Thanks in advance 🙂

Yet another Southport

Want ik had er nog niet genoeg van 🙂 Dit keer eentje met lange mouwen en zo’n handig lusje waardoor je ze kunt oprollen en vastzetten, waarvan ik niet weet hoe het heet in het Nederlands..

Door een reactie op een recente blogpost realiseerde ik me dat ik helemaal geen zwart jurkje heb. Het leek me een goed idee om daar verandering in te brengen. Ik had deze zwarte viscose stof nog liggen en zo zag deze jurk het levenslicht.

A comment on a recent blogpost made me realize that I didn’t have a black dress. I had some black viscose fabric in stash and so this dress was born.

Misschien dat nu eindelijk mijn collectie gekleurde panties wat vaker uit de kast komt.

Het rokdeel heeft kleine splitjes aan de zijkant. Ik had eerst de rok een beetje langer gemaakt en afgeronde zomen gegeven maar dat zag er een beetje suffig uit. Geen probleem, gewoon afknippen, recht omzomen en crisis afgewend 😉

The skirt has little splits at the bottom. At first I made the skirt a bit longer and with a rounded hem. It looked pretty dull. No problem, just cut it off, hem it straight and crisis averted 😉

Door de soepele stof is het een heel comfortabel jurkje. Het strikje in de taille is wederom voor een deel uit elastiek gemaakt voor nog wat extra comfort. Het enige probleem is dat het sinds ik dit jurkje maakte steeds net een beetje te koud was om het te dragen, maar dat lost zichzelf als het goed is vanzelf een keer op.

The soft viscose fabric makes this dress very comfortable. The waist tie again has some elastic in the centre, to add to the comfort. The only issue with this dress is that it has been too cold to wear it since I made it, but that will resolve itself eventually.

De mouwophoudertjes pikte ik van een blousepatroon uit de Simplicity Naaimode. Het was even een werkje in de dunne stof maar ze zijn goed gelukt.

The sleeve tabs were borrowed from a shirt pattern in a Simplicity magazine. It was a bit of a pain to make them out of this shifty fabric but they turned out well.

Ik denk dat ik dit jurkje veel ga dragen als het straks weer wat warmer wordt!

I think I will wear this dress a lot when/if the warmer weather returns!

Knipmode challenge: dress 24 from the jan ’17 issue

So much so that I get an almost manic look in my eyes 🙂

Het model is jurk 24 uit de Knipmode van januari ’17. Marianne van Foxgloves and thimbles bedacht onlangs de Knipmode Challenge, om wat meer te maken uit de magazines die ze had. Aangezien ik een kort abonnement heb genomen besloot ik om mee te doen. Mijn voornemen is om uit elk nummer van mijn abonnement in ieder geval één kledingstuk te maken. Dit is al het tweede item dat ik maak uit deze editie, een goed begin dus.

This is dress 24 from the january ’17 issue of Knipmode. Marianne of Foxgloves and thimbles recently came up with the Knipmode Challenge, to put those magazines to good use. At the moment I have a short subscription so I decided to make at least one garment from every magazine. This is already the second item I made from this issue so I guess that’s a good start.

Het is een vrij simpel patroontje: nauwsluitend model, vier figuurnaden en een rechte rok. De blikvanger is natuurlijk het kraagje, een soort variant op de sjaalkraag. Het patroon is voor tricot stoffen en ik gebruikte een flesgroene punto di roma. Ik zie deze kleur er op dit moment niet meer tussenstaan maar misschien komt ‘ie nog wel weer terug.

It’s quite a simple pattern really: close-fitting, four darts and a straight skirt. Obviously the collar is the main feature. It’s basically a variation on the shawl collar. It’s a pattern for jersey fabrics and I used a bottle green ponte knit.

Dit was de eerste keer sinds jaren dat ik weer een wat uit de Knip maakte. Qua maat was het een beetje een gokje. Volgens de maattabel heb ik een maat 38 nodig bij de buste en heupen en een 36 taille. Ik maakte een 38 met de gedachte dat ik die nog wel in kon nemen bij de taille indien nodig. Uiteindelijk bleek die vanaf de heupen omhoog overal te groot en er zat teveel lengte in het bovenlijf. Die eerste versie was niet meer te redden, de enige oplossing was een nieuw stuk stof te bestellen en opnieuw te beginnen. Uiteindeilijk is dit een maat 36, uitlopend tot een 38 op de heup, met de volgende aanpassingen:

het bovenlijf tussen de oksel en de buste 1 centimeter verkort;
de figuurnaden voor 2 centimeter naar middenvoor verplaatst, aan de bovenkant met 2 centimeter verlengd en aan de onderkant met 5 centimeter;
de figuurnaden achter aan de onderkant met 8 centimeter verlengd;
tussen taille en heup een klein beetje ingenomen omdat er een deuk in mijn heupen zit;
de schoudernaad een centimeter verkort;
de rok met 3 centimeter verlengd.

This was the first time in years that I made something with a Knipmode pattern. They don’t provide finished garment measurements so the size as a bit of a gamble. The size chart says I need a 38 at bust and hips and a 36 at the waist. I made a 38 first, figuring I could always take it in at the waist if needed. That dress was too big from the hips up and there was too much length in the bodice, there was no way I could alter it to fit. The only solution was to order some more fabric and start again. This time I made a 36 graded out to 38 at the hips, with these adjustments:

shortened the bodice 1 centemetre between armhole and bust;
moved the front darts 2 centimetres to center front and lengthened them with 2 centimetres at the top and 5 at the bottom;
lenthened the back darts at the bottom with 8 centimetres;
took in the side seams between waist and hip a bit to follow my hip ‘dip’/curve;
shortened the shoulder seam 1 centimetre;
lengthened the skirt 3 centimetres.

Dat is al een stuk beter qua pasvorm maar ik ben nog niet helemaal uit-aangepast. Ik ga nog een klein beetje lengte uit het rugpand halen en de armsgaten nog wat aanpassen.

That was way better when it comes to fit, but I’m not done altering yet. I need to take out a tiny bit of length from the back and adjust the armholes.

De naad zit niet op de goede plek. Ik ga deze ‘narrow upper chest‘ aanpassing proberen, maar dan zonder de wijdte weer aan te tekenen in de oksel. Het patroon loopt daar wat in een puntje en die ruimte heb ik niet nodig.

That seam is not in the right place. I’m going to try this narrow upper chest adjustment, but without adding the width at the armpit. The side seam curves out too much for me at that point so taking out that width will be good.

En dan, een rood exemplaar maken. En een blauwe misschien. Fijn stofje toch, dat punto di roma, een soort joggingsstof voor naar het werk 🙂

And then, make a red version. And a blue one perhaps. It;s a lovely fabric, ponte. Kind of like sweatshirting suited for work 🙂

Make it work

Een paar weken terug waren we op vakantie. We gingen naar Napels, Rome en Londen. Toen we weer thuis waren moest mijn vriend weer werken, en was ik nog een weekje vrij. Heerlijk! In die week heb ik deze jurk gemaakt, van een wax print stof die ik in London kocht.

A few weeks ago we went on holidays. We visited Naples, Rome and London. Back home the boyfried had to work again and I had another week of holidays left. Yay! In that week I made this dress, with some wax print fabric I bought in London.

Ik vond de vorm van de Edith jurk die ik in een wax print maakte erg fijn, maar om nou twee Ediths van wax print te maken trok me niet zo. Geen idee waarom, want ik heb wel meer jurken-van-hetzelfde-patroon, maar soms heb je dat zo. En dus bedacht ik dat ik in plaats van de knoopsluiting het patroon gewoon met middenvoor op de stofvouw te knippen en de kraag te vervangen door een v-hals.

I quite liked the shape of my wax print Edith dress, but making two wax print Ediths felt a bit weird. No idea why, I have made multiple versions of the same pattern a lot but sometimes this happens. So I figured I could ditch the button closure and just cut the center front on the fold. I also swapped the collar for a v-neck.

Newsflash: dat werkt dus niet. Bij de buste zat het nog wel enigzins okee maar verder naar beneden was het een beetje jammer. Bij mijn buik en bovenbenen was het voorpand veel te groot. Het leek wel een zwangerschapsjurk.

Newsflash: that doesn’t work. At the bust, the fit was more or less ok, but further down it was awful. There was way too much width in the front at my belly and upper legs. It looked like a maternity dress.

I laugh in the face of fit issues 😉

Na een paar keer flink zuchten en wat vloeken probeerde ik de figuurnaden aan te passen. Dat lukte bij mijn buik wel, maar ik kreeg ze aan de onderkant maar niet goed. Het bleef er raar uitzien. Tot ik bedacht dat ik de figuurnaden wel uit kon laten lopen in plooitjes. Bingo! Dat was de oplossing. De pasvorm is bij lange na nog niet perfect, de figuurnaden zitten nog wat raar bij mijn buste, maar het is nu in ieder geval een draagbaar geheel geworden 🙂

After a few sighs and some cursing I tried to adjust the waist darts. It worked at the belly area but I couldn’t get the bottom end to look right. Untill I figured that it would probably look better if the darts would end in a pleat. Bingo! That was the solution. The fit is nowhere near perfect, the darts still look weird at the bust, but at least I ended up with a wearable dress 🙂

Die net-niet-matchende print op de rug geeft een mooi psychedelisch effect, haha. Zoals je ziet trekt de stof her en der nog een beetje, maar het ziet er echt 100 keer beter uit dan eerst, dus het stoort me niet echt.

The almost-matching print at the back gives a nice psychedelic effect, haha. As you can see the fabric still pulls here and there, but it’s a million times better than it was at first, so it doesn’t really bother me.

Met een vestje gaat het ook prima. Eindconclusie: het was even doorzetten maar nu wel blij met deze jurk. Al denk ik niet dat ik dit ‘patroon’ nog een keer zal gebruiken..

It works pretty well with a cardigan too. Conclusion: it was a bit of work but I’m actually quite happy with how it turned out. Although I probably won’t use this ‘pattern’ again..

Chinese/African/Dutch Edith dress

Drie jaar geleden maakte ik de Edith jurk van MariaDenmark voor het eerst. Dat was toen een proefmodelletje voor een blouse. De jurk was een succes, de blouse niet, haha. Sterker nog, de jurk heb ik nog steeds. En dat kwam goed van pas. Drie jaar geleden was ik wat minder kritisch op de pasvorm van dingen die ik maakte als nu. Ik vond toen dat de Edith mij goed paste. Maar inmiddels heb ik wat meer verstand van pasvormen en zag ik toch wel wat aandachtspuntjes. Het was heel handig dat ik de jurk van toen kon aantrekken zodat ik kon zien wat ik aan moest passen.

Three years ago I made MariaDenmarks Edith dress for the first time. Back then it was a wearable muslin for the blouse. The dress was a succes, the blouse wasn’t, haha. I still have that dress. When I made it I wasn’t as nitpicky on fit as I am now. I thought the dress fitted quite well then, but now I can see that some adjustments are in order. So it was quite easy that I could just put on my old dress to see what needed adjusting.

De belangrijkste verandering is vrij makkelijk te zien: ik fabriceerde er mouwen aan. Het patroon heeft kapmouwtjes maar nadat ik tig jurken met kapmouwtjes maakte ben ik daar wel een beetje op uitgekeken. Ik gebruikte het armsgat en de mouw van Butterick 6869. In eerste instantie de lange mouw, maar dat was een beetje print overkill. Dus veranderde ik ze in korte mouwen.

The biggest change is quite obvious: I put sleeves on it. The pattern has a kimono sleeve but since I’ve made so many sleeves with cut-on cap sleeves I’m a bit done with them. I used the armhole and sleeve from Butterick 6869. The long ones at first but that was a bit too much with this print, and so I changed them to short sleeves.

Verdere aanpassingen waren een 3 centimeter sway back adjustment en ik nam de zijnaad tussen de buste en de oksel wat in, van niks ter hoogte van de buste tot ongeveer 1,5 centimeter bij de oksel. Ook verlaagde ik het bustepunt met 1,5 centimeter.

Other adjustmenst were a 3 centimeter sway back adjustment and taking in the side seam at the top, tapering from nothing at the bust to 1,5 centimetre at the armpit. I also lowered the bust apex by 1,5 centimetre.

Het resulteerde in een prima passende jurk die alleen nog een héél klein beetje extra ruimte nodig heeft bij de buste. Hoera!

That resulted in a nicely fitting dress that only needs a teeny bit more room at the bust. Yay!

De stof is een wax print van Vlisco die ik via AliExpress kocht. Een Nederlandse stof met een Afrikaanse print die ik in China bestelde. Een wereldse jurk dus, ook al voelt het als ik heel eerlijk ben wel een beetje raar.

The fabric is a wax print by Vlisco, bought throuh AliExpress. A Dutch fabric, with an African print, ordered from China. A dress of the world, really, although it feels a bit weird if I’m honest.

De prints op wax print stoffen hebben vaak een betekenis. De naam van deze print is Sika Wo Antaban, geld heeft vleugels. Vrij vertaald: als je niet goed voor je geld zorgt dan vliegt het bij je vandaan. Ik denk dat ik niet zo goed voor mijn geld zorg dan, want het vliegt meestal mijn portemonnee uit 😉

The prints on these wax print fabrics often have names and meanings. This particular print is called Sika Wo Antaban, money has wings. Apparently it means that your money will fly away from you if you don’t treat it well. Well, I guess I don’t treat my money right because it’s always gone so soon 😉

De knoopjes vond ik in de Jan Sikkes hier in Leeuwarden. Ze passen supergoed bij de stof, al zeg ik het zelf. Ik kocht er eerst 8, maar toen bleef er wel een heel groot stuk rok over onder de onderste knoop, dus ik moest de volgende dag terug voor één knullig knoopje 🙂

The buttons are from my local fabric shop. They match the fabric so well! I bought 8, but that left me with a lot of skirt below the lowest button. And so I had to go back to the shop the next day for one lousy button 🙂

Geld heeft vleugels dus. Ik koop de laatste tijd wel vaker dingen via AliExpress. Het is hardstikke goedkoop en ik vind het heerlijk om te grasduinen op die site op een luie avond. Maar hoe ethisch verantwoord is dat eigenlijk? Goedkoop spul kopen dat ik hier ook zou kunnen kopen, alleen dan voor minder geld. Het voelt steeds minder prettig moet ik zeggen. Wat vind jij?

So, money has wings. Lately I bough a bunch of stuff on AliExpress. It’s cheap and I love browsing around the site on a lazy evening. But is it reallty ethical, buying things cheap from the other side of the world, when I can also get them more locally, only more expensive? I’m not feeling really good about that to be honest. What do you think?

Another dress

Ik ben een beetje door de blogpost-titels heen voor dit patroon 🙂 Het is één van mijn favoriete patronen: mijn basispatroon met ronde hals en aangeknipte kapmouwtjes. Zie ook de flamingo-jurk en de Japanse katten-jurk, en dit ongeblogde exemplaar:

I kind of ran out of blogpost titles for this pattern 🙂 It’s one of my favourite: my basic bodice with scoop neck and cut on cap sleeves. Also known as the flamingo dress, the Japanese Kitty dress, and this un-blogged wax print one:

En er was er nog één, in het lichtblauw met kleine bloemetjes, maar die kleur stond mij niet zo goed. Die is naar de kringloop gegaan.

And there was another one, light blue with a small floral print, but it wasn’t a good cololut for me. It ended up at the thrift store.

Dit bovenlijfje dus, met een halve cirkelrok, een geplooide rok of zoals hier, een gerimpelde rok. De stof kocht ik in Japan, het is een beetje een stugge katoen. Ik was meteen verliefd op de print en de kleuren.

This bodice, with a half circle skirt, a pleated one or, as pictured here, a gathered one. I bought the fabric in Japan, it’s a cotton and a bit on the stiffer side. The print and the colours were what drew me to it.

Het bovenlijfje is denk ik een klein beetje uitgerekt tijdens het naaien want het is nét wat aan de ruime kant in de taille en ook een heel klein beetje aan de lange kant, de taillenaad piept net een stukje onder de riem uit. Omdat ‘ie een beetje ruim in de taille is draag ik dat riempje, anders steekt de rok een beetje raar uit naar voren.

The bodice probably stretched a bit when sewing this dress. It’s a smidge wide at the waist and also a tiny bit too low. You can see it in the picture above, where the waist seam peeks out under the belt. I’m wearing the belt because of the slightly too wide waist and the gathered skirt: without the belt the skirt sticks out funnily at the front.

Er hangt niks raars onder mijn rok uit, dat is een stopcontact 🙂

De voor- en achterpanden van de rok bestaan uit een volledige stofwijdte. De zelfkant liet ik eraan zitten, dat ziet er wel grappig uit vind ik. Daarnaast staan er van die handige bolletjes op met de kleuren die in de stof zitten, handig voor het uitzoeken van bijpassende vesten.

Both the front and the back of the skirt are the full width of the fabric. I kept the selvedges on, because it looks funny. They also have these little dots in the colours of the print, which is very usefull for finding matching cardigans.

De zoom is zoals gewoonlijk met een satijnen biaislintje afgewerkt. Dat geeft een beetje gewicht aan de zoom en voor mijn gevoel blijft de zoom dan minder ‘hangen’ op een panty.

The hem has a satin bias facing as usual. It adds a bit of weight to the hem and I feel like it also makes it cling to tights less.
