Colette Ginger

Het was liefde op het eerste gezicht met dit stofje op het Stoffenspektakel. Er lagen een paar couponnetjes van en ik nam er eentje mee. Het grappige is dat van de vier stoffen die ik er kocht, dit de eerste was die ik knipte, maar de laatste die ik ook daadwerkelijk naaide. Ach, sommige projecten moeten nou eenmaal even sudderen, denk ik zo.

It was love at first sight when I saw this fabric at the big fabric market when it was in town. There were a few remnants of it and I took one home. Funny thing is that out of the four fabrics I bought, this was the first one I cut up but the last one I’ve sewn up. Some projects just need a bit of stewing, I guess.

Ik maakte er een Colette Ginger van, met een paspelbandje in de taille en de rechte tailleband. De Ginger maakte ik al eerder, dus ik diepte het patroon op uit de verzameling en ging aan de slag.

I turned it into a Colette Ginger, used the straigh waistband option and added piping to it. I had used the pattern before so I dug it up out of the stash and went for it.

Het was wellicht beter geweest om die oude Ginger nog even aan te trekken (kun je nagaan hoe vaak ik die draag…) want hij is te groot verdorie!

It would probably have been better to try on that old Ginger before cutting my fabric (you can tell how often that one gets worn…) because this skirt is too big, damnit!

Gelukkig is daar een vrij simpele oplossing voor, zodat het toch nog een beetje draagbaar is.

Fortunately, there is an easy solution to still be able wear it.

Toch baal ik er wel een beetje van. En omdat dit rokje supernetjes in elkaar zit (het zorgde voor mijn 2016-doel van nieuwe technieken uitproberen) met het paspelband en al heb ik ook écht geen zin om het uit elkaar te halen en in te nemen.

I am a bit bummed though. And because this skirt is really well executed (it kickstarted my 2016-goal of trying new techniques) and has piping an all I really don’t want to take it apart to take it in.

Ach ja, je kunt niet altijd winnen jammer genoeg. Volgende keer beter, en dat weet ik zeker want ik heb gewoon nóg een Ginger gemaakt, in spijkerstof en een kleinere maat, en die is supergoed gelukt en past ook nog goed. Maar die bewaar ik even voor een volgende post, anders worden het wel érg veel foto’s.

Can’t win them all I guess. Better luck next time! I’m sure of that because right after this one I made another Ginger, in denim and a smaller size, which turned out just as good and fits good as well. I’ll save it for another post though, to prevent photo-overload.

Jungle January

Januari. Sommige mensen denken bij januari aan goede voornemens. Ik niet. Ik denk aan Jungle January!

January. For some people, the first thing that comes to mind is new years resolutions. Not for me. For me, it’s Jungle January!

Want tradities zijn belangrijk, toch? Daarom bestelde ik in december alvast de stoffen voor deze outfit.

Because traditions are important, right? That’s why I ordered the fabrics for this outfit in december. You know, just to be sure.

Het idee van een korte trui met een wijdvallende rok pikte ik op bij Hanne en zat al een tijdje in mijn hoofd. Toen ik deze stof zag klikte het en wist ik dat dit dé outfit zou worden voor Jungle January. Ik zocht een stofje voor de rok erbij (en nog wat meer, want gratis verzending boven €50…) en klaar was ik. Het duurde helaas vrij lang voordat de stoffen dan eindelijk bij mij thuis belandden, maar het was het wachten waard want het lijkt erg goede kwaliteit.

The idea of a cropped sweater and a cirkle skirt was planted in my mind by Hanne. When I saw this fabric something clicked and I immediately knew this would be this years Jungle January outfit. I added fabric for the skirt (and then some more because free shipping over € 50…) and that was that. Unfortunately the delivery took a little longer than I thought it would but the fabric ended up in my house eventually. It was worth the wait though, I’m impressed with the quality of the fabrics.

De rok is mijn oude vertrouwde halve cirkel. Ik heb nog even getwijfeld of ik er een hele cirkelrok van zou maken maar ik denk dat dat een beetje té dramatisch is voor mijn huidige leventje. Andere keer misschien. De trui is een beetje van de Plantain, een beetje van de Lady Skater en een beetje van mezelf. Ik maakte een proefmodelletje, maakte het wat langer en wat wijder bij de buste (de stof is denk ik eigenlijk een beetje te zwaar voor zo een nauwsluitend model), en vergat het wat te verlengen op de rug. Op de rug is nooit zo erg, want dat zie ik zelf niet, dus wat maakt het ook uit 😀

The skirt is my trusty old half-cirkle. I had a moment of doubt whether to make a full cirkle skirt but I think that would be just a bit dramatic for my lifestyle. Maybe next time. The sweater pattern is made from a bit of Plantain, a bit of Lady Skater and a bit of me. I made a quick test version and then decided to lengthen it a bit and add some width to the bust (I think this fabric is actually a little too heavy for a sweater as fitted as this one), and promptly forgot to add length to the center back. Oh well, it’s not like I see that myself so who cares right 😀

Ik ben erg blij met deze outfit. Een vergelijkbaar shirt had ik nog niet in de kast liggen en de rok past bij heel veel dingen die ik al wel in mijn kast had liggen. Een goed begin van het nieuwe jaar dus!

I’m really happy with this outfit. The cropped sweater is something I didn’t have in my closet and the skirt goes with a lot of things that I do have in my closet. A good start of the new year!

De trui maakte ik bijna helemaal op de overlock, behalve het doorstikken van de hals en de zoom bij de mouwen. Daar gebruikte ik de naaimachine voor. In de grijpers deed ik rood garen, voor de lol. Hetzelfde deed ik bij de rok, zodat je kan zien dat het een setje is (een beetje cheesy, maar ik vind dat leuk). De zoom van de rok is met een satijnen biaisbandje afgewerkt en met de hand vastgezet.

The sweater is constructed entirely on the overlocker, except for the neckline topstiching and the sleeve hems. Those were done on the sewing machine. The looper thread is red, because I like that. I used that for the skirt too, so you can see it’s an ensemble (I know, I am cheesy like that). The hem has a satin bias facing and is done by hand.

Goals

Zo, op de laatste dag van het jaar is het tijd om vooruit te kijken. Bij de Top5 van Gillian hoort eigenlijk ook een deel over highlights en reflecties, maar ik heb eigenlijk niet zoveel zin om daar uitgebreid bij stil te staan. Korte samenvatting: 2015 was een tof jaar, veel leuke dingen. Minpuntje: dat onze kat overleed.. Naai-reflectie: door de aankoop van een coverstitch machine heb ik veel tricot dingen genaaid. Zo, hebben we dat ook weer gehad 🙂

On the last day of the year it is time to look forward. The Sewing Top 5 does include highlights and reflections but I’m not really in the mood for doing that. A short summary: 2015 was a great year, with lots of good things happening. Sad thing: our cat died.. Sewing-reflection: because I bought a coverstitch I sewed a lot more jersey things.

Ik dacht, laat ik dat nog maar eens onderstrepen met foto’s van dit Plantain-shirt, waarvan ik twijfelde of ik er wel een aparte blogpost over moet schrijven. Probleem opgelost!

To illustrate that reflection, here are some pictures of a recently made Plantain shirt, which I doubted whether or not to write a dedicated blogpost on. Problem solved!

Doelen/Goals

Goed, over naar de doelen. Daar moest ik een poosje over nadenken. Heb/Wil ik eigenlijk wel doelen, qua naaien? Ik ben niet zo’n doelen-mens. To-do lijstjes word ik ook al niet vrolijk van. Toch kwam ik met twee (jaja) doelen op de proppen voor komend jaar.

Right, on to the goals. I had to think about this a bit. Wasn’t sure if I had/wanted any. I’m not a goal-person. To-do lists aren’t really my thing either. In the end, I settled for two goals for the upcoming year.

Het perfect passende strakke t-shirt patroon maken / making a perfectly fitting pattern for a slimfit t-shirt

Ik ❤ zwarte strakke shirtjes. Die kocht ik altijd in de winkel, van die basics voor een tientje, meestal bij de Sting. Maar het valt me al een tijdje op dat ze, waar ze bij de buste en taille goed passen, eigenlijk te strak zijn bij mijn heupen. In de spiegel zie je dat nog niet eens zo erg maar op foto’s wel. De zoom kruipt wat omhoog en dan ziet het er gewoon raar uit. Komend jaar wil ik op basis van de shirts die ik heb en de schouders en mouwen van de Plantain hét perfecte patroon voor mijn lijf maken. Zodat ik er honderden van kan maken (niet allemaal zwart uiteraard). Startpunt: meer leren over negative ease en het maken van patronen voor tricot stoffen. Dus als iemand nog leestips heeft daarover, dan hou ik me aanbevolen!

I ❤ black slim-fitting tees. They go with everything. I used to buy them in the store, usually at the Sting. Lately I started noticing that while they fit me well at the bust and waist, they are a bit too small at the hips. It’s not really noticeable in the mirror, but you can see it on photo’s. The hem crawls up and then it just looks messy. So, next year I’ll try to use the shirts I have and the Plantain tee shoulders and sleeves to create the perfect fitted tee for my body. So I can make a hundred of them (not all black, obviously). First up: learning more about negative ease and patternmaking for knit fabrics. So if you have any recommendations for reading material, please share!

2. Nieuwe technieken uitproberen / try new techniques

Hiermee ben ik altijd zo’n muts. In mijn hoofd werkt het zo: he, dat heb ik nog nooit gedaan > dat is vast heel moeilijk > ik weet niet of ik dat wel kan > uitstellen. Terwijl het in het echt meestal zo werkt: laat ik dat eens uitproberen > he, dat is eigenlijk best makkelijk. Dus: in 2016 ga ik nieuwe dingen niet meer uitstellen omdat ik denk dat het heel moeilijk is ~~en ik het toch niet ga kunnen~~. Zo.

This is something with which I am such an old cow. In my mind, it goes like this: hey, I’ve never done that before > it must be really hard > I’m not sure I can do that > procrastinating. In real life, it usually goes like this: let’s just try it > hey, it’s not that hard! So: in 2016 I’m not going to procrastinate trying new things because they seem difficult ~~and I think I will not be able to do them~~. There, I said it!

Plantain plus cowl

Hét voordeel van een patroon met een ronde hals? Dat je er de Renfrew-col op kan plempen!

The biggest advantage of a pattern with a scoop neck? The possibility to put a Renfrew-cowl on it!

Jep, het is nogmaals een Plantain, met nogmaals een high-low zoom. In een hele fijne gebreide tricot. Geen idee waarom de stof zo goedkoop is, want voor zover ik kan zien is het prima kwaliteit. Deze trui is al een aantal keer in de was geweest en blijft tot nu toe erg mooi.

Yup, it’s another Plantain, with another high-low hem. In a cosy French Terry fabric. I have no idea why it’s so cheap, because the quality seems to be pretty good. This shirt has been washed multiple times already and it holds up wonderfully.

Je zou deze trui ook ‘de trui van de gezamenlijke beslissingen’ kunnen noemen. Klein beetje achtergrond: laatst deed ik een Myers-Briggs test. Daar kwam uit dat ik een INFP-type ben. Toen ik daarop googlede kwam ik het volgende plaatje tegen:

You could also call this shirt ‘the shirt of collective decisions’. A little background: I recently took a Myers-Briggs test, which told me I am an INFP-type. When I googled it, this picture showed up:

Keuzes maken is dus niet mijn sterkste punt. Dat wist ik natuurlijk al, maar het is toch wel fijn om te zien dat het onderdeel is van een groter geheel, zeg maar 🙂 Goed, ik twijfelde dus over de leren elleboogstukken, en de omgekrulde mouw-zoom. En wat de je dan? Advies vragen op Instagram natuurlijk!

Decisionmaking is not my forte. Of course I knew that, but it is a good thing to see it’s a part of a bigger picture 🙂 I was in doubt whether or not to add the pleather elbow patches and whether or not to let the sleeve hems curl up. So, what do you do? Ask for advice on Instagram of course!

De elleboogstukken kwamen er. En de omgekrulde zoom ook. En daar ben ik nu heel blij om!

The elbow patches were a yes, and so was the curled seam. And I’m really happy with them!

De elleboogstukken kon ik niet spelden dus die heb ik eerst met lijm vastgezet en vervolgens met een siersteek vastgenaaid.

Because I couldn’t use pins for the elbow patches I used fabric glue to baste them on. Then I stitched them down with a decorative stitch.

De zoom van de mouw heb ik met de lockmachine afgewerkt omdat de stof een beetje rafelde. Vervolgens heb ik ‘m twee keer omgerold en op twee plekken met de hand vastgezet. De zoom van de trui deed ik met de coverlock.

The sleeve hem is finished with the overlocker to stop it from fraying. It’s folded over twice and tacked down by hand in two places. The hem of the shirt is coverstitched.

Dat was het eigenlijk wel 🙂 Fijn, om vrij basic kledingstukken een beetje op te kunnen leuken met zulke details!

Top 5 en min 5 2015: hits & misses

Ja lieve kijkbuiskindertjes, het jaar is alweer bijna voorbij. Het einde van het jaar vind ik toch altijd wel een bijzondere periode. Een tijd van terugkijken, dingen afsluiten, een nieuw begin ligt om de hoek. Afgelopen jaar was voor mij persoonlijk grotendeels een goed jaar, dus het is fijn terugkijken.

So, that’s another year almost over. The end of year always feels like a special time to me. A time to reminisce, and with new beginnings just around the corner. This year was for the most part a good year for me, that’s a nice feeling.

En nog een kleine eervolle vermelding hier voor mijn zwarte nepleren halve cirkelrok, die het tot nu toe niet is gelukt om op mijn blog te komen. Al deze kledingstukken (oke, vooral jurken 🙂 ) hebben één ding gemeen: ik voel me like a million bucks als ik ze aan heb. En is dat niet wat alle kleren voor je zouden moeten doen?

Plus a little honorable mention here for my black pleather half cirkle skirt, who hasn’t made it to the blog just yet. All these garments (ok, mostly dresses 🙂 ) have one thing in common: they make me feel like a million bucks when I wear them. Isn’t that something all clothes should be doing?

Goed, natuurlijk was niet alles een succes afgelopen jaar. Er waren ook de wat minder geslaagde items. Newsflash: het waren er minder dan 5. Dit zijn ze:

Flamingo dress

Totaal niks mis mee eigenlijk, de pasvorm is perfect, maar er is kennelijk geen ruimte in mijn leven voor een flamingo-jurk.. Live and learn 🙂

Nothing wrong with this dress actually, it fits perfectly but apparently there is no place in my life for a flamingo dress.. Live and learn 🙂

Sew it up: the hangover

Als ik mijn armen omhoog doe, trekt de hele jurk omhoog. Daardoor hangt het niet zo lekker op de bank in deze jurk. Wat in principe het doel was van deze jurk.

If I raise my arms, the whole dress gets pulled up. Not very comfortable for lounging on the couch. Which was basically the goal of this dress.

De stof van deze jurk tekent nogal, en in een uni kleur valt dat gewoon ontzettend op. Daarnaast zit de band in de nek aan één kant een beetje ongelijk, waardoor het voorpand daar een beetje trekt. En in een uni kleur.. etc 😉 wel jammer, want het is een hele comfortabele jurk en ik vind de kleur heel mooi.

The fabric is just a bit too clingy, which is a bit too obvious in this solid fabric. Also, the neck band is a bit uneven which makes the bodice pull a bit at one side. Which is a bit too.. etc 😉 It’s a shame actually, because the dress is very comfortable and I really like the colour.

Geen idee meer waarom, maar op een gegeven moment was het ‘momentum’ van deze jurk voorbij, en toen was ‘ie nog niet af. Niet dat het nog veel werk was, maar er zat gewoon te veel tijd tussen het beginnen aan en het (niet) afmaken van. Hij heeft nog heel lang onafgemaakt op het jurkenrek gehangen, maar op een gegeven moment heb ik hem weggegooid.

I really don’t remember why, but I waited to long finishing this dress and suddenly it had lost ‘momentum’. Not that there was a lot of work still to be done, but there was just too much time between starting it and (not) finishing it. It hung on my dress rack for a while and in the end I just threw it away.

Dat waren ze! Wat waren jouw meest en minst favoriete kledingstukken van afgelopen jaar? En heb je het ook wel eens dat het gewoon te lang duurt voordat je iets af maakt en je ‘momentum’ verliest?

Sew it up: minder zwart, meer glitter

Als ze bij Sew it Up monthly met het thema ‘minder zwart, meer glitter’ komen, wat doe je dan? Iets ~~in het zwart~~ met glitter maken natuurlijk!

If Sew it Up monthly announces that ‘less black, more glitter’ is their theme for december, what do you do? Sew something ~~in black~~ with glitter ofcourse!

Voor dit rokje volgde ik de tutorial van MariaDenmark voor een ‘draped skirt’. Die wilde ik al een poos uitproberen maar ik vond steeds niet de juiste stof. Omdat het rokje min of meer gevoerd is met dezelfde stof als die aan de buitenkant, wilde ik graag een wat gladde tricot. Een paar jaar terug lagen die volop in de stoffenwinkel hier, maar nu zijn ze uiteraard nergens meer te vinden… Totdat ik deze stof zag liggen!

For this skirt I used MariaDenmark’s tutorial for a draped skirt. I’ve been wanting to try it for some time now but couldn’t find the right fabric. Because the skirt is self-lined I wanted to use a knit that’s a bit slippery. A few years ago my local fabric store had plenty of those, but ofcourse now they were nowhere to be found… untill I spotted this one!

Het lijkt zo best een ingenieus rokje maar het is eigenlijk heel simpel. Of tenminste, dat zou het moeten zijn! Het rokje zelf was geen probleem. Je naait een rechthoek stof van 1x je heupwijdte en 2x de gewenste lengte in een lange tube. Dat deel ging probleemloos, uiteraard. Ik had bedacht dat ik er een brede elastieken tailleband aan wilde maken in een tunnel. Eerst dacht ik: ik stik de rok dan aan de bovenkant vast, elastiek erin en dan eronder dichtnaaien. Wat ik vergat was dat de rok geen zoom heeft omdat je ‘m daar dubbel vouwt. Lang verhaal kort: ik probeerde een aantal verschillende manieren, niks lukte, en uiteindelijk werd ik chagerijnig en heb ik de rok gewoon aan het elastiek genaaid met de lockmachine, en vouw ik ‘m naar binnen als ik de rok aan heb.

It looks like quite the ingenious pattern but it is actually quite simple. At least, it should be! The skirt itself was not the problem. You just sew a rectangle of once your hip width and twice the desired length into a tube. But I wanted an elastic waistband in a casing. At first I thought I would just sew up the top of the skirt, add the elastic and close the tunnel with a seam. I kind of forgot that the skirt doesn’t have a hem, because that’s where you fold the tube to create the drape. Long story short: I tried some other methods, nothing would work, I lost my patience, got really cranky and just serged the skirt to the elastic. When worn I just fold the elastic to the inside.

Je ziet zelfs nog een stukje stof van een eerdere (afgeknipte) poging tot aanzetten van het elastiek 🙂 niet mijn netste werk ooit, ahum!

You can even see a little piece of fabric from an earlier attempt of putting on the elastic that I just cut off 🙂 not my finest work ever, ahem!

Gelukkig zit die gekke tailleband mooi verstopt onder mijn shirt. Als je nog eens een leuk, comfortabel rokje wilt dat weinig stof en weinig tijd nodig heeft (als je weet hoe je een elastieken tailleband moet maken that is) dan is Maria’s tutorial een aanrader!

Fortunately that stupid waistband is covered by my shirt. If you ever want to sew a nice, comfortable skirt that doesn’t require much fabric and time (if you know how to sew an elastic waistband that is) then I recommend Maria’s tutorial!

Inderdaad comfortabel, want het lijkt alsof het heel nauwsluitend is rond de knieën maar is het niet 🙂

Het enige probleempje is dan nog dat de stof glitters afgeeft. Hoe (on)gepast is het om iemands interieur onder te glitteren als je op bezoek gaat? 🙂

The only issue is that this fabric leaves a trail of little glitters. How (in)appropriate is it to glitter on someones furniture when visiting? 🙂

Hemlock t(hr)ee

In april schreef ik al eens over de mijn strijd met T-shirts naaien. Na de succesvolle Plantain wou ik ook nog wel eens een andere vorm t-shirt proberen. Enter Grainline’s Hemlock tee. Een lekker wijd, casual shirt.

In april I talked about my struggle with sewing T-shirts. After discovering that the Plantain shirt fits me well, I wanted to explore other tee shapes. Enter Grainline’s Hemlock tee. Slouchy and casual, just what I was looking for.

Dit is versie 1, in een fijne viscose tricot die ik op het Stoffenspektakel kocht. Ik heb ‘m in de taille een beetje ingenomen (ongeveer 6 cm aan elke kant) omdat ‘ie anders wel erg massief leek met die rechte lijnen en verticale streep in de print.

This is version 1, in a great viscose jersey that I bought at the big fabric market when it was in town. I took it in a bit at the waist, about 6 cm on both sides.

Knutselen met patronen vind ik misschien wel net zo leuk als het naaien zelf en de Hemlock is een prima blank canvas voor allerlei aanpassingen. Voor versie nummer twee veranderde ik de volgende dingen:

het voor- en achterpand in totaal 4 cm versmald over de hele lengte
taille- en heupvorm toevoegen in plaats van een rechte zijnaad
de halslijn verlaagd en ietsje verbreed
een high-low zoom in plaats van een rechte

Playing around with patterns is something I like almost as much as sewing itself and the Hemlock is a perfect blank canvas for that. For version 2 I made the following changes:

taking out a total of 4 cm of width on the entire length of the shirt
adding waist- and hip shaping on the side seam
lowering the neckline and also widening it a smidge
adding a high-low hem

(volgende keer even dat staartje van de lockmachine eruit halen 🙂 / note to self: please remove that serged tail before taking pictures next time 🙂 )

Iets teveel zwangerschapslook naar mijn zin! En dus vouwde ik nog een 3 cm aan wijdte uit de onderkant van het voorpand, uitlopend tot niks aan de bovenkant. Ook versmalde ik de mouwen nog een beetje bij de pols.

Yeah that’s too much of a pregnant look for me! And so I folded out about 3 cm of width at the front hemline, tapering to nothing at the neckline. I also slimmed down the sleeves a bit.

En zo komen we aan bij versie 3.

Het is niet echt een Hemlock meer te noemen, maar het is nu voor mij het perfecte casual T-shirt patroon geworden. In mijn hoofd heb ik minstens 10 andere versies gemaakt, in uni kleuren of juist met andere streepjes, en met of zonder mouwen. Hoeveel T-shirts heeft een mens nodig denk je?

It’s not really a Hemlock anymore with all those changes, but for me it’s the perfect slouchy tee pattern. In my mind I have already made up like a dozen of them, in solid colours or more stripes, and with or without sleeves. How many tees is too many, you think?

Lekala 4078

Geen idee meer hoe ik er bij kwam, maar een tijdje terug had Lekala een aanbieding en besloot ik om maar eens een patroon van hen te proberen. Lekala maakt patronen op jouw maat, je vult zelf een aantal afmetingen in plus nog wat andere (optionele) dingen over je verhoudingen, en na een paar minuutjes kun je een pdf patroon op maat downloaden. Mijn oog viel op Lekala 4078.

I don’t really remember where I read about it, but a while ago Lekala had a sale and I decided it was time to give one of their patterns a try. They make patterns to your measurements, you just fill them in and give some other (optional) info about your shape, and after a few minutes you can download a made to measure pdf pattern. I pretty much fell in love with Lekala 4078.

Toen ik de technische tekening zag wist ik meteen dat ik ‘m in het zwart wilde maken, en het stukje in de zij van een restje nepleer. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan:

When I saw the technical drawing I immediately knew I wanted to make this dress in black, and use a scrap of black pleather for the inset. And so it happened:

Dit is het patroon zoals ik dat kreeg van Lekala. Niks aan aangepast, behalve dan de lengte, daar haalde ik ongeveer 6 centimeter vanaf. Ik ben superblij met hoe deze jurk is geworden. Hij voelt heel sjiek, maar tegelijkertijd comfortabel. Ik droeg ‘m vorige week naar het werk en kreeg er heel wat complimenten over! Waar ik vervolgens weer wat ongemakkelijk onder was… Een compliment kan ik nog wel aan, maar als mensen heel bewonderend gaan doen dan vind ik dat toch een stuk lastiger. Een jurk maken voelt nou eenmaal niet als rocket science 🙂

This is how the pattern looks straight out of the ~~envelope~~ printer. The length is the only thing I adjusted, I’ve shortened it by about 6 centimeter. I’m very happy with how it turned out. It feels fancy but in a very comfortable way. I wore it to work last week and it got a lot of compliments! Which then made me feel a bit awkward… I mean, I can handle a compliment but when it turns in some kind of admiration it’s another thing. I mean, yeah I’ve made a dress, but sewing isn’t exactly rocket science now is it?

Oke, terug naar de jurk. De stof komt van Budgetstoffen. Na het voorwassen heb ik het in de droger gegooid en daar werd het een beetje fluffy van en heerlijk zacht. Het is ook een hele soepele stof, ideaal voor de gerimpelde stukken. Maar het tekent ook wel een beetje, kijk hieronder maar.

Ok, back to the dress. The fabric is from Budgetstoffen. After prewashing I tossed it in the dryer, which made it a bit fluffy and very soft. It has a great drape, which is perfect for the gathered pieces. But it’s also a bit clingy, as you can see in the next picture.

Een onderjurkje is dus wel een vereiste 🙂

A slipdress is a necessity 🙂

Zoals ik zei zou ik een paar dingen veranderen bij een volgende versie. Ik zou sowieso de taillenaad van het voorpand verstevigen met een stukje elastiek. Hij is nu een beetje lubberig, wat gelukkig niet zichtbaar is door de rimpels in het voorpand. Verder zou ik een stukje lengte verwijderen uit de overslag van het voorpand. Het zit een beetje te losjes naar mijn smaak (ook hier: onderjurkje!). Ook zou ik de schouder een beetje versmallen. En ervoor zorgen dat het strijkijzer geen sporen nalaat! Al zijn die in het echt niet zo duidelijk als op deze foto’s.

As I said, in a next version I’ll make some changes. First, I’ll reinforce the waist seam in the front with some clear elastic. It’s a but wobbly now, not noticable because of the gathers in the front bodice, but still. I’ll also take out a bit of length out of the wrapping parts of the bodice. They feel a little bit too lose for my taste (again: slipdress!). Finally, I will narrow the shoulders a bit. And make sure that the iron doesn’t leave any marks! Even though they are not as obvious as they look on the pictures.

Tot zover mijn eerste ervaring met Lekala. Het patroon zelf ben ik erg tevreden mee. De werkbeschrijving was vrij karig: 8 punten, nog geen halve A4. Gelukkig is dit niet een heel moeilijk patroon en is het ook niet de eerste jurk die ik maak, dus ik had er geen problemen mee. Maar als je nog niet heel ervaren bent of het soms lastig vindt om er achter te komen hoe dingen in elkaar zitten, dan is het niet echt een aanrader.

So, that’s my first experience with Lekala. The pattern itself is great, I’m really pleased. The instructions are quite sparse: there are 8 steps, they don’t even cover half an A4. This is not a difficult dress to sew, and it also isn’t my first, so I didn’t have an issue with that. But if you’re not that experienced, or find it difficult to see how something goes together, then maybe Lekala isn’t the best choice for you.

Het uiteindelijke oordeel: / the final verdict:

YES!

Ik wil graag nog een versie van dit patroon maken, maar dan met polkadots zoals deze. Iemand enig idee waar ik een dergelijke stof kan vinden?

I would like to make another version of this pattern, in black and white polkadots like this one. If you know where to find fabric like this (preferrably in the EU), please let me know!

Another Rachel wrap dress.

SPOILER ALERT: I LOVE THIS DRESS!!!!

Oke, nu dat duidelijk is kunnen we over naar een kleine bekentenis. Ik heb geloof ik een bipolaire naai-stoornis. Of ik wil alles tegelijk naaien en wel nu meteen, of ik heb er even helemaal geen zin in. Je raadt vast in welke fase ik me nu bevind 🙂

Right, now we’ve got that out of the way it’s time for a little confession: I think I am suffering a bipolar sewing disorder. Either I want to sew everything at once and also right now, or I don’t want to sew at all. You can probably guess in which phase I am right now 🙂

En dus maakte ik nog maar een Rachel wrap dress. Dit keer van een dikke tricot. Dezelfde stof maar een andere kleur gebruikte ik voor deze Lady Skater met col. Het is een heerlijke stof, warm en zacht. Perfect voor wat kouder weer.

And so I made another Rachel wrap dress. This time out of a heavy jersey fabric. The same fabric I used for my cowl Lady Skater, but in another colour. It’s such a nice fabric, soft and warm. Perfect for colder weather.

Omdat deze stof wat dikker is, minder rekt en anders valt dan een viscose tricot zoals die ik voor de eerste twee versies gebruikte, moest ik op het rugpand twee figuurnaden toevoegen. Verder voegde ik aan de zijnaden een halve cm toe zodat ik niet zou eindigen met een te strakke jurk. Het trekt een beetje bij de overslag, zoals je hieronder kunt zien, maar dat vind ik niet storend.

Het enige wat ik nog had kunnen aanpassen is de lengte van het bovenlijfje, maar daar was ik te lui voor. Een centimetertje langer was misschien beter geweest maar ik vind het zo ook dikke prima.

Because this fabric is thicker, less stretchy and has a different drape than the viscose jerseys I used for the first two versions, I had to add darts to the back for shaping. I also added 0,5 cm to the side seams so I wouldn’t end up with a too tight dress. The wrap pulls a bit as you can see above but it doesn’t bother me.

The only thing I should probably have changed but didn’t do because I was lazy, is lenghtening the bodice. It could use an extra centimeter, but it will do perfectly fine as is though.

De figuurnaden zie je zo goed als niet door de print.

Maar ze zijn er wel.

But they are there.

De zwarte contrast-stof is een restje viscose tricot dat ik nog had liggen. Het leek me leuk om eens te spelen met wat contrast en ik vind het hardstikke goed gelukt. Ik denk dat de schouderstukjes en het randje van de mouw het mooi in balans trekken.

The black contract fabric is a viscose jersey leftover. I thought it would be fun to play around with a bit of contrast and I like how it worked out. I think the shoulder yokes and the sleeve hem bands balance it out.

Rachel x Plantain

Omdat de schouders van de Rachel wrap dress die ik laatst maakte niet zo goed pasten heb ik ze vervangen door de schouders en mouwen van de Plantain. Dit was de eerste keer dat ik een dergelijke aanpassing deed dus ik legde de taillepunten op elkaar en op hoop van zegen trok ik vanuit daar de zijnaad, het armsgat en de halslijn van de Plantain over. Het was een flink verschil:

Because the shoulders of the Rachel wrap dress I made recently didn’t fit to well, I put the shoulders and sleeves of the Plantain shirt onto the dress pattern. This was the first time mashing two patterns together like this, I just matched them at the waist, traced the side seam, shoulders and neckline of the Plantain and hoped for the best. As you can see above, the difference was substantial.

Vervolgens trok ik een wat minder geliefd stofje uit mijn stoffenkast en ging aan de slag.

Then I pulled out a piece of fabric I didn’t especially like anymore and went for it.

Score!

Perfect gelukt al zeg ik het zelf. De schoudernaad zit waar ie moet zitten en ook de hoogte van de taille is precies goed. De overslag zit ook een stuk steviger nu er niet meer teveel lengte in het bovenlijfje zit.

Perfect, if I may say so myself. The shoulder seam is where it needs to be and the waist hits at exactly the right place. The wrap also feels much more secure now the excess lenght is taken out of the bodice.

Precies goed / just right.

Hij is ook net een stukje korter dan de vorige, die ik bij nader inzien toch wat aan de lange kant vond. Geen ingewikkelde aanpassing, gewoon een kwestie van geen zoomtoeslag aanknippen.

It’s also a little shorter than the previous one, which in hindsight I decided is just a little too long. No complicated alterations here, I just didn’t cut any hem allowance.

Het enige dat ik nog ga aanpassen aan het patroon is de onderkant van de voorpanden, omdat die aan de kant waar ze overlappen nu iets te lang zijn.

The only thing left to change on the pattern is the length of the wrap at the hem, it needs to be shortened a little.

Verder ben ik helemaal tevreden over hoe het patroon nu is. Op naar nog tig meer versies 🙂 Voor nu in de planning: een effen donkerrode en een effen zwarte. Serieuze vraag: hoeveel versies van hetzelfde patroon is te veel?

Besides the wrap lenght I’m perfectly happy with the fit of this pattern. On to many more versions! So far I’ve already planned a solid dark red and solid black one. Serious question: how many versions of the same pattern is too many?
